Made it home in about 11hrs.

Many thanks to Saabnut, and everyone else.

Is there a prize for the most insect bites?

I'm am a Southern wimp. Well done to everyone who made the effort though, it looks like another one I'm gutted to have missed.

Looks like it was a fabulous meet.

What amuses me most about most of the pictures on here is that you have to double check and be sure which vehicles are the ones that drove there, and which are the permanent fixtures of the site. The only way to be completely sure was by the length of grass around the vehicle.

I'm once more haunting my house, got here about 12:20. I'll post a digest post shortly when I've uploaded my photos.

I should be home by 4am, which'll be 15 hours I think. Bit later than planned due to scenic hoonage through the Yorkshire Dales, then the A1M and various other roads being shut at the exact points I wanted to use them.

A minor quibble. Superb weekend, many thanks Nick for hosting. A+++ wud attend Scotland again.

Now back on the M1 to give Clio a thrashing. This car has been amazing.

I've had an hour or so, going to carry on.

Rob, I'm about to encounter the shut bit of the a1 I think...

Home now minus the little green bastard. A huge thanks to Bucketeer for the ride home to pick up the Saab (yes dear, I went to Aberdeen in it, honest) and to all of the others who've carried my other assorted rammle for me to collect at a later date.

Top honours go to Saabnut who not only put on a tremendous event and was an excellent host throughout but helped me out hugely by assisting in the eventual repair and repatriation of the Wart at some point in the future.

What else can I say? Much enjoyment was had, no photos were taken because I was just having a great time just soaking up the fantastic comeradery of a bunch of folk who, for most of the year, are just names on a little web forum on the outskirts of the town that is the Internet.

I don't know what's more broken, the Wartburgs transmission or myself - it was an epic adventure to get it there and it almost worked but I think it was the wiser choice to leave it there to save greater damage and heartache whilst suffering at the hands of the numerous recovery folk needed to relay it back home when the inevitable happened.

Of course, now that other shiters have found that Scotland isn't as far away as you thought, some of you will be joining me to attend an SVM monthly munch in the future?

THE SHITE-UP

Beko has pretty well documented our joint adventures both on here and the book of faces (resulting in a raft of friend requests from shiters that both were and weren't at SF).

I started at home on Thursday, hoping my radio wiring adapter would arrive so I could have aux in etc. LOL NOPE, yer takin' tapes lad. I did, and it was fine. FM reception was balls though, as my head unit is ancient, and the aerial is on the back seat as I can't be arsed wiring it properly.

After helping bub2006 with a gearbox, Beko made his way to Manchestervacs to sell some machines to them, as well as meet up with me and 3VOM. 3VOM couldn't make SF due to illness, but had a vacuum for Beko. I imagine the fuel saving will be friendly to 3VOM's wallet anyway as he drives a 960!

Speaking of Volvos, none were in attendance.

After vacuum business was done, Beko and myself headed north on a very uneventful trip up the M60/61/6/74, where nothing really happened and no chod was spotted, aside one other Laguna II (for a total of three on the trip). We just sat at the speed limit right up to East Kilbride, and having left Manc around 4pm, got to EK for 9ish (including regular breaks). BavarianRetro was out assisting with a breakdown, so we went to the local Morrison's to stock up on everything except beer, as we got there too late for that, because SCTSH LAW. Back to the unit via KFC, then sit around a bit, and BR shows up around midnight, lets us in to sleep, and job's a good'un.

We left early the next morning in anticipation of rush hour, and as a result showed up at chez Fowler over an hour early:

for contrast to before, when only DW's Starlet was in shot.

We ('we' being David Fowler, myself, Beko, DW and sloth in a bowl) had a wander into Glasgae and an almost deserted Wetherspoons by Central Station for breakfast, and from there it was back to Fowler's and subsequently SVM HQ at Barrhead, where Campbell Motor Services, his mystery Montego Mayfair, The Bus, and all the other delights* of SVM HQ greeted us.

We ran express to Dundee, however Beko had run ahead as he had to drop in on someone, and reconvened on us leaving.

ARG executive saloons were compared:

We stopped briefly after Dundee to pick up FPB7 , who had heroically driven his Wartburg all the way up at sub-60mph, only for it to throw a driveshaft, and later split its header tank (it is still in Aberdeenshire). At the same time we chanced upon occasional shiter Kirton.

Shitefest was achieved around 3pm, and we were the first to arrive.

At this point the thread has mostly already shown the contents of Saabnut's Scandinavian sanatorium, however I do have a few photos worth posting:

A truly idyllic setting, and one you could never expect to see the likes of anywhere else ever again.

Saturday's activities included a trip to the co-op in Laurencekirk, in Squire_Dawson's MO Oxford, five up:

Timeless settings.

Later in the day, when starting Saabnut's Brown Green Goddess looked to be fruitless, twelve of us crammed into RobT's Clio, CMS' Montego, and catsinthewelder's 405 and went off to a chippy in Aberdeen on Mr Fowler's recommendation from his days as a Megabus driver.

42722986541_a1b2e6023a_b.jpgIMG_1045 by max_burton, on Flickr

The chippy was at one end of two one way streets, leaving us only one place to look for parking, a dead end street. As we went up the street, and failed to find any parking spaces, someone blocked the road with a modern Clio to jump start a slightly shonky 307, leaving us no way to escape. We abandoned the cars on some double yellows and went off for chips. As we were outside the chippy waiting for various things to be cooked, the ex-Supernaut Xantia passed us by!

We also spotted a Noble M400 with a plate that seemed to read BIG NOB somehow, but wanky font means I can't work out what it actually said.

We returned to the cars, and no parking tickets were had, so we headed off to the seafront* to eat, then back down to not-quite-Auchenblae, to find that the Goddess had started. General merriment ensued, and we camped out in the bus while discussing various things, messing with the destination display, bell, and loud pedal.

Sunday morning saw our numbers reduced, but we still had a bit of a mess around before going our separate ways.

There must have been a car show on somewhere in Perthshire, as on the way down to Barrhead I clocked:

  • PA Cresta (bonus: it wasn't pink; it was blue)
  • Capri 280i
  • TVR Chimaera
  • mk3 Cortina GXL - in Roman Bronze; convoying with a mk2 Escort 1.3L
  • Sierra Cosworth, in Moonstone
  • Evo V

I also spotted a facelift Citroen DS on the M6, and two Manchester plated taxis the wrong side of Perth. No clue what they were doing up there.

I'm 90 miles from my dad's, stopped for a wee and to make more smokes!

Oh and aye (we learnt Scottish whilst we were there) it was an utter delight to convoy with you Mr Ghosty.

The bloody rover, on the a70, whilst I was scrabbling up and down gears, screaming a bit and trying not to rip my tyres off the wheels on the hateful road surface just fucked off, and had to slow down several times for me to catch up!

Then 2 police cars hooned into view and blocked the road and I cried some more in fear we would have to turn around and do it all in reverse but luckily we just had to wait whilst a fuck off massive road machine crawled by and then carry on.

Aye aye, been a pleasure tailgating all of you (and it helped my MPG no end). The 400 auto really does punch above its weight!

I seem to have come home with something of a Scottish twang...

Rookie error: If going that way again, take J44 M6 for ASDA for cheap beer (no min price per unit) and card pay pump pez. If you're boycotting ASDA, alternatively take J43 M6 for Tesco and pez. Both are are stone-throw from their respective motorway junctions.

This trip is bought to you by (new sugar-reduced inferior and tastes rank) irn bru and coffee

Me and the 205 are home finally.

Nearly 1200 miles completed and most of the service station toilets in Britain visited. I call that a good weekend.

Just time for a morning brandy before many many sleep.

Posted

I'm in Peterborough! Just got some British* diesel, 3/4 of a tank got me from Dundee, up to shitefest and to here!

I am now about to use the toilet... Poor bp

I made it home at 5.10am. The A40 by Northolt was almost empty, and so it should be at 4am.

The Clio has done 1,542 miles since I bought it on Wednesday evening. Now it's time for some kip.

Did anyone get a video of the Goddess when she was running?

I feel so much better now.  Can we do it all again this weekend?

:D

Yes, but it's in a vast sea of video clips I have to deal with this week.

Does this sea of clips unclude one of bump-starting a shonky diesel hatchback?

Naturally!

Does that description actually narrow down to just one clip?

You may very well think that, but I couldn't possibly comment!

Oh and aye (we learnt Scottish whilst we were there)

So long as you learnt the important ones like swally and carryout.

I'm very jealous but a jaunt up to Scotlandland wasn't on the cards this weekend.

Is there a prize for the most insect bites?

Possibly although I think rml2345 might carry that particular trophy

Looks like it was a fabulous meet.

One comment made on the Friday evening, can't remember who made it though, was "Everything here looks like it belongs"

Of course, now that other shiters have found that Scotland isn't as far away as you thought, some of you will be joining me to attend an SVM monthly munch in the future?

I should bloody hope so. Considering some of the folk there at the weekend were from Lancashire and Yorkshire, I don't see why not!

Also, MIDGE BASTARDS (and the remains of a pigeon I smacked at 90mph coming into Peterborough)
