Hi,What's best - Stereo up full blast in your classic, or turn the bugger off and wind the windows down to hear what your car sounds like (and what passers by are saying)? Please submit your vote...

You have a fully working stereo? Some mistake surely!Pretty much every car I've ever owned has only been able to pick up crackly mediumwave off-shore & 'pirate' radio stations. Enjoy it while you can.

Yep, that counts as a stereo. OK I'll recap - Saturday afternoon - engine rasp, or footy results on 5 Live?

Posted

Football is for homosexuals & sailors.I'll take clattery valvegear anyday

Posted

Muffled results service begging for attention over the strain of a Rootes Arrow's 1725 twin carb belching for air. And dear life.

Posted

..........hang on, i thought rugby & light/moderate buggery was for sailors. Oh well, shows you what I know living in the land-locked midlands.

Posted

Scepts are you voting for the radio then?

I voted for turn the bugger off in the end. If I was piloting a mondeo then keep it on, but generally 'classic' car motoring doent need any artificial noise polution.

Between Sid & Doris owning my car and me buying it someone else got in and thought it was a good idea to fit a up-to-the-minute stero and accompaning huge speakers - bugger! When he sold the car he ripped it out leaving huge holes in the irreplaceable 1970's panels.Luckily I managed to repair it and now my trusty Motorola does that job as it was meant to.Motorola = yes Stereo = No

Just thought I'd mention that this wat the last thread on page 98, and I have a VDO from a Vauxhall wedged behind my centre seat, some wires dangling into the dash sockets, and some blown domestic speakers lobbed in the back, and wedged in by a bit of railway sleeper. It plays The Who and The Kinks well enough for me to hear over a 62hp 3 bearing pushrod diesel, underinflated crossplies, and a couple of wobbly props.

I bloody love The Kinks.

Just won a minimate car radio on the bay its only 3 inch x 3 inch x 2 inch , cost a bloody fortune and i mean a fortune for what it is , dont know if it works , dont care really , had to have for my Imp , just for looks , I must be bloody mad , Anyway engine noise all the way for me .

in its day the polo first had 10 speakers, 2 subs, sony xplod stereo and 2 amps, removed them all when some welding was done (now 6 months ago) and never refitted it.. it weights to much

Hmmm...Can I opt for:Driving along listening to a cassette, then hitting traffic but not being able to listen to traffic reports on the radio because the radio doesn't work; then asking your travelling companion to unbelt, dive onto the backseat and delve into the boot of a hatchback to retreive the radio/cassette that the radio only works on and changing it whilst stationary, so you can hear the traffic reports?

I would like to vote for the two-knob radio installed for retro/originality/aesthetic purposes, but which is unusable because it only receives long wave and blasts a 200dB *CRACK* through the speaker every time the volume is touched.

I like it, Radio 4 or RTé1 during the day and French shit at night!

I have to have music in my motors. It's vital.

Otherwise I spend all my time listening out for clunks and unusual sounds and end up getting to my destination either very worried or mildly concerned. I hear clunks, squeaks and rattles in brand new motors, ffs, so my old stuff drives me insane.

First thing I checked with ye olde Mk2 Escort was the radio. The welding wasn't a worry, having a working radio is!

How did thid thread, resurrected from over 4 years ago, not get lost in the great board purge? I'm dumbfounded and stunned.

Holy thread resurrection from the dead revival. A smidge over 20 years ago and the 3rd ever thread that ever was created in this forums current incarnation.
Came across it while doing a spot of forum maintenance and saw the date.

Anyway I'm a non-stereo person in cars generally nowadays and very rarely have the stereo on.

Only problem with that is that you hear every squeak, knock or tap, then quietly convince yourself that's something is wrong or broken.

Who are the posters in red?

Stereo is mod, one speaker is fine

Pah, who needs frivolities like stereos...

Depends on the car for me.  I don't miss it in the Trabant (not that you'd be able to hear one anyway!).  I do make plenty of use of the (very good) sound system in the Volvo quite frequently though.  Especially as it's my default long distance cruiser.

I will probably resurrect the radio for the Rover in due course as I do intend to use it for some long distance trips once the bugs are worked out of it.  Though the car having had a negative earth conversion done will make it far more of a challenge.

I may also just utilise the speaker fed from a more modern source in the short term though, as that's going to take a while to sort - especially as someone chopped the umbilical between the two chassis in half.

There are times I like having the radio on - music station or Radio 4. I don’t have it excessively loud though - 20 years ago I did for my mixtapes/mixdiscs etc (90% of the time rock music)

If it’s Owain Wyn Evans or Jeremy Vine on R2 I’ll quickly switch over or switch off!

Electric Leyland is Richard Lawson, original founder of AS along with Mr H Sceptre and some one else whose name escapes me. The former also wrote the column 'As Found' which in modern day form is our thread 'Dumped Cars in Your Area'.

I'm considering removing the upgraded ICE (head unit, sub and amp) from the Sapphire and go back to the factory system. Not sure about having no ICE whatsoever but a working original head unit looks great and there are ways to make it more 21st century compatible.

Blakey? As I recall he was the mysterious technical person behind the forum, but rarely (if ever?) posted.

Apart from longer journeys in the daily driver I increasingly find myself wafting around without the radio or CD playing nowadays (and never anything off my phone, what sort of madness is that?). Nice to have a bit of quiet time.

Weekend car/ classic not having a stereo doesn’t bother me but if it’s a daily a good sound system is a must, though honestly as much as I hate to admit it ‘and my teenage heavy metal loving self would have a heart attack’ I’m gravitating a lot more towards the chilled tunes of stations like Classic FM on long drives as I find it makes me far more relaxed and I drive better

A good sound system is a must for me. To the point where it took me considerable effort to find an X-Trail with the Bose pack when I bought this one.

It's almost 50/50 as to whether that stereo is being used for a chilled out podcast or a rave, mind. With a small gap in the middle that covers Popmaster if I happen to be in the car at 10.30!
