Bit similar for me but the other way round. I've three garages, all separate, each one with a car slowly rotting away in yet no actual space to work on them or really the proper skills to fix them.

My welding is shit, my welder is shit. I'll need to do the back arches and wings on the red Fiesta soon but I just don't have the skills and can't afford to pay.

It would be nice if we did have a collective type thing but we're all over the place and stuff like rent expensive.

You're blessed! Having space is what leads to dozens of broken cars laying about and not enough time and money to get any sorted as there is always another project on the way...

An Autoshite HQ like Area 52 would be pretty amazing. I would chip in money each month towards such a place if it were viable but I really have no idea how much such a thing would cost. It would also have to be in a fairly central location for people to be able to make use of it. I visited Area 52 a few times back in the day & didn't mind driving from Birmingham to Bristol for a full weekend play day,

True we are all over the place I get that still a nice thought though ;)

I don't think I would like to end up in a field of rusty pipe dreams but we all get those times when we would love to buy something because its cheaper than we will ever see it again but alas there's nowhere to put it :(

Especially for non road worthy cars. If it's legal then road storage works for me but I can't buy a non MOT'd project car without anywhere to store it or work on it.

I am not too bad for space. But can only afford to run my family bus and one hobby car.currently the celica. My gay pug is parked on next doors driveway.she is OK about has long as it's getting sold and moved. If needed I may be able to cadge another couple of driveways. Although last time I done this my other neighbours grandkids were climbing on the car I had there.

Posted

I've space for two on the drive, and there is some parking behind houses across the road I've occasionally used for storing the odd car.

It's a bit of hard standing where they pulled down some council garages. I haven't had any issues leaving cars there for short spells but wouldn't feel comfortable leaving a nice car there long term. And it's a pain leaving the daily over there.

I've room for one on my dad's drive, he lives alone and has one car. Only issue is he's 30miles away and likes his trailer accessible, which means me parking behind it. Great for security as the car is blocked in I suppose.

As a last resort I could leave a car on my grans drive as she doesn't drive however her neighbours are a bit odd and have feral kids who would climb all over it. Plus I'd make it a pain for her to get her bin out

True dat!

One of my acquaintances has a huge amount of storage at his disposal.  He is now retired but still has his first car....that is how much space he has.

Every single one of these vehicles is beyond redemption and I seriously doubt he even knows where some of them are.

I can cope with things not getting done if the vehicle(s) in question are not deteriorating.   At present I have 6 spaces, three of which are rented and 5 vehicles (including a caravan).   The "spare" space gives me flexibility to cope with an immediate purchase and that is a better feeling than actually having the money to buy anything else!

If I had more dry, secure storage rest assured it would be filled!

Posted

Same issue, I have already occupied my mums garage, half her drive and a spot at my friends house (to be fair he has a huge fock off field but I feel like I've already used my goodwill quota there)

Something has to go before anything else arrives, but I want to keep them all..

Posted

Same situation here, very limited space, I would love to contribute to a shared space to store one or two of my cars though! Maybe we should really consider creating a proper register for people who would be interested in something like this. That way we will quickly know where an idea like this would be viable, and where it isn't.

You know how you have the Male/Female symbols? Maybe we could have skills icons ;)

Just a thought ;)

That's a brilliant idea.  And as for the collective/cooperative suggestion, who says there can only be one...?

I bet there could be a lot more cooperation right now in terms of repair or restoration work, but nobody really knows who is where.

Well, to do it properly, we would need a sticky thread, in which we divide the Ununited Queendom up in sensible catchment areas.

Then members could put their names into the respective areas together with what they have to offer.

E.G.:

Greater Manchester Area

Junkman - Good at locating htf spares, reasonable mechanic, outside space for minor to medium jobs, excellent beer and wine drinker, allround stinky person.

Or some such.

Would be good to post the user ID as a hyperlink, too, so other members just have to click on it if they want to send a PM.

We have space for 4 cars, have 3. The mother and I now have to convince Old Man that 2 isn't enough.

But who would have the honor of creating such thread?

Someone who is proficient enough in British geography to come up with sensible catchment areas.

So I guess one of us two...

As long as you don't stink of car air fresheners or stinky Chemicals thats fine by me ;)

I'm highly allergic to artificial fragrances and perfume.

I keep getting tempted by a small yard that's for sale in the Dumbarton area; it's not exactly local to me but the price is right and the fact it's partially tenanted means I'd have to behave and not simply turn into Mr Trebus.

I wish we could crowd fund a yard/lockup (or multiple) in strategic locations - I have a storage unit full of tools I don't use and no parking for shite

Looks good to me, might even be able to reduce the amount of locations by concentrating close together places in one area. For example, Newcastle and Middlebrough are close enough to merge them I think, personally I wouldn't mind driving down there for getting some serious work done.

We would need to move this into its own dedicated thread though, could a Mod create a sticky for this, with the first few post reserved for a register of locations and people living nearby?

I have just lost 2 off road parking spaces leaving me with one off road and one very off road space.  The daily drive Astra is in the former and the Discovery is resting in the latter.  Getting it back down will be interesting,  I'm told that there is a collapsed concrete garage underneath the pile of earth and weeds it is perched on.  The 405 is irritating my colleagues by taking up a space at work next to the bosses broken PT Cruiser.  When the 405 is fixed I could probably park it next to the Astra but I don't want it there broken.

I have a plan to build a workshop behind the house which will include a parking space.  This won't be a space to keep a long term project though as anything in there will need to vacate on a regular basis so I can work in there.  The space outside it isn't on a road though so running MOT fails are fine.

As for working partys The Midlands Massive have got together a few times,  I'm up for joining in with more.  I know most of the local Shitters (within about 20 miles of Ludlow) and we have each others phone numbers ready to help out when required.

Stoke on Trent area

HBOL 3 spanners for mechanics

HBOL 3 spanners for electrics

HBOL 1 spanner for prep and paint

HBOL 2 spanners for welding

HBOL 4 spanners for buying tools and putting them on the shelf

Currently no spare space for storing cars and no undercover area for working on them.

Haven't we had this thread before?

Everyone said where they were and stuff but nothing came of it?

Problem for a lot of us is having somewhere covered or at least sheltered from the wind and rain. A nice big drive might be free and is OK for storage but shit to work on.

I would be interested. I'm actually interested in getting my own yard but there seems to be very little on gumtree and the like.

I'm near Wolverhampton.
