The Green Lean Machine - 1974 Ford LTD Leaving the GGG

You are off to collect a yank barge and consider that the correct breakfast ? It needs more bacon and maple syrup at least.

This has been rectified a couple of hours later.

Well, they tried to put those terrible oil soaked chipboards, aka hash browns, onto my plate, which yielded stark protest,

so they gave me an extra egg instead for sophisticated veins and arteries clog uppage.

Right. The whole thing went about as well as getting an anvil dropped on your head in Luisiana.

As Mr Conrad already mentioned, the Beastestate shat its waterpump bearing and thus created

more steam than a packet steamer on the Mississippi River.

So we nursed it on by filling more water than there is running down the Niagra Falls at every opportunity there was wayside.

After crossing three or four Statelines, we arrived at the Green Lean Machine.

Stories and papers were swapped, a radiator topped up and we were on our way.

The Beastestate can hold its own, if you chose the right perspective.

What it can't hold is its water.

The Green Lean Machine took a break in appropriate surroundings.

End of the road for the Beastestate.

Basically, we pulled the plug (oh, the pun) because we didn't want to risk any serious damage.

Thus Green Flag was called upon.

While we were waiting for our saviour, I did some nosing around the engine room of the Green Lean Machine.

When did you last have a car with a power steering oil cooler?

Sad.

It was dropped off at a well known shite sanctuary.

The rest of the trip was completely uneventful, sorry for that.

But what was it again that isn't supposed to fit the vast Junklatifundium?

When I had it, it used to occasionally drip from the waterpump bearing area. There was a new pump in the boot when Skizzer and BV picked it up. I'd planned to change it but never got around to it...

My fault!

Not your fault.

After I extensively used it in Ireland for a Month, we were in France with the car a couple of weeks ago.

If I would have had any premonition that this would happen, I'd not have taken it on the trip.

All the spares are still with the car, plus the ones I bought in the meantime.

The water pump change is not an involved job.

I bet Bannedman's mobile spanner slinger does it in two ticks.

We won't see much of Junkman now, he'll be outside burning dinosaurs in his LTD, pretending to be chasing Dirty Harry!

Stockport is twinned with San Francisco, Phact!

I was trying to remember if Dirty Harry had one of these in Magnum Force, but I have a feeling it may have been a Galaxie at work and an LTD convertible at home. Years since I saw it!

Was that the same film where the HD plod bikes turn into Triumphs just in time to jump on to a scrap aircraft carrier?

I still feel bad! I knew it needed doing...

Still, no serious damage done and everything's worked out ok. Is it Breadvan who's bought the beastestate then?

The LTD is a very worthy replacement though! It's gorgeous! When are you going to bin off the steels in favour of cheap nasty shitty racing alloys? Or even go massive for the donk look!

Btw, I've been building up a supply of bits for these septic Fords. I've got all sorts, rebuilt front calipers, pads, alternator, rebuilt starter, genuine oil filters, air filters... if you get stuck for anything!

Would the Massive Massive be going to the upcoming field of dreams ? I'm looking forward to pushing cars through the mud again !

I was under the Sigma the other day changing discs, pads and exhaust and I'm still finding chunks of SixCylinders field wedged into parts of the undercarriage, how wet is the field going to be this year ...

The trouble with the Massive Massiv is we're a bit spread-about.  I'm a long way away from the Field of Dreams, although Herr Junk is about 100 miles closer.  That still makes a difference at our level of fuel-supping!  I can't speak for Joloke or Dan, but they are both significantly closer...

I don't think the field of dreams is that far from me? I'm in Hampshire near Portsmouth.

Pushing the Mercury through mud does sound like such fun* though!

BV and I have bought it back, having sold our shares to Junkman a few weeks ago. We were concerned for its longevity after eBay alerted me (I have a followed search on Granny estates).

It'll most likely end up with me. I plan to get some tidying up done; recommendations of who could do this would be welcome as I'm already filling up the order books of all the people near me.

Dan, I wonder if the people currently doing your Capri would fancy taking this on afterwards? Not looking for a concours £20k resto, more a bit of de-rusting and some paint, but a proper-ish job not an MOT bodge.

That's great news! I'm happy you lot have taken a shine to it and want to keep hold of it, I know once it's sold it's no longer my concern what happens to it anymore but it means a lot to me to see it loved and looked after. It deserves to have a bit of tlc too. I deliberately didn't look at the eBay listing either!

I'll PM you about the bodyshop I'm using.

We drove it around a bit today, three people abreast in total comfort. No matter how hard you try, or where you take it,

it just doesn't blend in, nor does it really fit anywhere. The weirdest thing, though, is that everyone seems to like it.

So far, I already got more positive comments on it by random people, than I got on all other cars I had the past few years combined,

and which weren't necessarily positive, especially in case of the Rovers.

Oh, and I call it the Green Lean Machine because it tries to outlean the R16 when cornering.

The Beastestate can hold its own... What it can't hold is its water.

Bloody hell, how much water is there in a Granada normally? That's leaked so much out it looks like it's been RAINING.

So that you have to fill about eight litres every 20 odd miles until it just pisses all of it in one go.

That's when you finally call Green Flag.

The funny bit was, that everyone who stopped (first an AA man, very nice of him, then a rozzer)

first walked up to the LTD to check what's wrong, as if that were a natural thing.

We had to point out that it was actually the Granada that disgraced itself.
