buckbuckbuckie Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Help me apply for a V5! The vehicle is badged as Leyland Sherpa 215 Deluxe The reg is RHN 502R and shows up on the MOT History database as Leyland back to February 2006. How Many Left only shows Sherpas as Freight Rover, no Leyland Sherpas or British Leyland Sherpas. On the V5 application should I go for Freight Rover or Leyland? I found a small plate in the driver's footwell that reads: Commission No CV 306 019208 Would anyone agree with me that 019208 would be the VIN, chassis or frame number? Does anyone know that the VIN plate is elsewhere on a '77 Sherpa? It is currently an Ambulance and the tax disc in the window shows NIL tax due to being an ambulance. It was first used March 1977 so doesn't meet the January 1977 cut off to apply for historic vehicle tax. Do I go boring and put it to Private/Light Goods or chance trying to leave it as an Ambulance for another year? Thanks for any help guys.
dollywobbler Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Freight-Rover didn't exist until 1981, so Leyland is probably the best bet. eddyramrod 1
dean36014 Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Might be worth finding out the build date as didn't the historic tax get based on that once. It might have sat round at a converters waiting to be fitted out as an ambulance and just qualify. trigger 1
trigger Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 It was probably built in 1976 so will be tax exempt, have you tried to see if Gaydon have any records for it? eddyramrod 1
trigger Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 This is your chassis number by the way. eddyramrod, Cavcraft and Tamworthbay 3
mk2_craig Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 It is possibly down as Missing in the model name field on the database, or has some generic descriptor like Ambulance.
trigger Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 It's online as being a LEYLAND AM. I'm guessing AM stands for ambulance.
mk2_craig Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Maybe the stuff in the footwell is to do with the bodybuilder, Wadham Stringer or whoever else was constructing these things 40 years ago?
andy18s Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Don't want to piss on your parade but are you applying for it as the legal owner?
buckbuckbuckie Posted May 31, 2017 Author Posted May 31, 2017 Thank you everyone. I am feeling much more confident getting this V5 now. I've had this Sherpa sat in the garage for a good few months doing nothing. My eldest who is 7 loves going to all the car shows and always wants to show his T reg Laguna that sits at the garage but I've never let him! Getting the Sherpa on the road will give us something worthwhile to show and hopefully stop him pestering me to take the Laguna! Cavcraft and eddyramrod 2
mercrocker Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Help me apply for a V5! The vehicle is badged as Leyland Sherpa 215 Deluxe Do I go boring and put it to Private/Light Goods or chance trying to leave it as an Ambulance for another year? Might affect VED exemption if it stays as an Ambulance?
Pillock Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 You'd have to look at the rules of what constitutes an ambulance, otherwise I'm going to put some sticking plasters in the car and get free tax.... You can still phone Swansea and ask them questions like this btw, they're surprisingly helpful.
PiperCub Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 It always was if not still is, a vehicles build date that matters, first used/registered date didn't matter. So I'd agree with others, chances are this was built in late 76 so will get free VED. Recall years ago when in the MGOC, a chap had a June 73 reg'd Midget - he checked the build date at BMIHT and the certificate came back with a build date of December 72 - hence he got free tax! (I tried it with my 73 Midget I owned then - reg'd start of August 73 - was built in June 73 - Arse!). So well worth a go.
Junkman Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Don't waste your time applying for a V5. Get yourself a V8. bunglebus, Twiggy, barefoot and 6 others 9

barefoot Posted June 23, 2017 Posted June 23, 2017 At the risk of a thread hi-jack, my Scirocco shows on the V5 as being an automatic. It has always been manual, do I just send the V5 back with auto crossed out in crayon or is it more complicated than that now?
Eddie Honda Posted June 23, 2017 Posted June 23, 2017 Do they really need to know? They're getting their tax.
Eddie Honda Posted June 23, 2017 Posted June 23, 2017 (I had a ERF 50cc moped once. I only got it easily changed to Italjet because there were still local offices and I knew someone who worked in one.) somewhatfoolish 1

AlabamaShrimp Posted June 23, 2017 Posted June 23, 2017 This thread is pointless without pictures. We might have been able to say exactly what it is from a few and been able to perve at it at the same time. Junkman and eddyramrod 2
buckbuckbuckie Posted June 23, 2017 Author Posted June 23, 2017 I will reward you all with pictures ASAP! Probably in a few months time... Maybe...
AlabamaShrimp Posted June 23, 2017 Posted June 23, 2017 Oh wow I can't wait, maybe I'll sit on the end of my seat until then.... Dave_Q 1
John F Posted June 24, 2017 Posted June 24, 2017 Register it as a lawnmower. That'll fuck with their minds.
Cavcraft Posted June 24, 2017 Posted June 24, 2017 They do take absolutely for ever to get V5s out if you actually have to apply for one like that. It'll still be worth it though. Just like when you host the pictures this morning!
DodgeRover Posted June 24, 2017 Posted June 24, 2017 So has anybody ever had a nasty surprise when applying for a logbook? Visit from the law/ irate owner? The nearest I've had is a letter saying it isn't on the system.
buckbuckbuckie Posted June 24, 2017 Author Posted June 24, 2017 This is the nearest I can get to it just now, sorry! I hope to have it on the road for a local show in August though Bonus picture of my delapidated Scimitar trigger, Cavcraft, J4mes and 6 others 9
Felly Magic Posted June 24, 2017 Posted June 24, 2017 I think he just outsherpa'd Breadvan formerly of this parish Christine 1
AlabamaShrimp Posted June 24, 2017 Posted June 24, 2017 There you go says what make it is with those letters on the front.
bunglebus Posted June 25, 2017 Posted June 25, 2017 First Sherpa I've ever seen that I like. They still drive like a horse-drawn carriage with a cement mixer engine attached though.
