Possibly my best spot ever - a Leyland 20 still in use! Same owner from new and the signwriting was applied in 1980.

Couple of Jeep J20s used as crew/equipment carriers when shooting where trucks can't travel. There's a whole fleet of them dotted about.

Was hoping that Standard would pop up here, what a great thing. I saw a Bedford Chevette van thing a couple of days ago in use as a window cleaner's van complete with ladders on the roof etc, but I didn't have time to take a pic

Barrett's talk of a Chevanne reminded me of a local electrician who's sign written HA has been around for years. I've never managed to get a picture, so I googled it, I say 'it' , seems there's at least three of em!.

 

Now, the cynical might think one of the first pair had been reshelled* onto a tax free logbook. But the K plate has been MOT'd pretty much every year since 06, in fact both it and the W plate one are currently taxed and MOTd , the X plate was last on the road in 2014.

Locally to us there’s a guy who uses a Mk3 Transit, 98 R plate Luton it is. In really tidy condition, he won’t part with it despite its age it does the job faultlessly.

I see another mk2 transit with a tipper body semi regularly in use by builders, there's a gardener near me has an ex met surveillance mk4 petrol swb transit that he keeps getting asked if he will sell.

 

I would buy a mk3 Lwb if one turned up at the right price/ time. Bits are much cheaper and easier to get than for my mk2.

Dont have any pics, but I always notice the lorries used for fairground rides are usually really old, some even older than me (born 1987) although I suppose by comparison to most trucks they probably have lived easier lives.

Most showmen's trucks have had a first life in haulage then picked up cheap. Viable as they don't do many miles and there's plenty servicing time.

Round here there's two Transit mk1's and a mk2 in regular use as recovery trucks. All of them are battered, rusty and well worn but still keep going. I spotted the mk2 one on the M27 today which made me think of this thread.

I've seen them loads over the years with all sorts on the back of them, I think they operate for a breakers yard round here somewhere.

I'll take a pic next time I see them.

Additionally, most showmen are quite adept at keeping oldschool stuff on the road. They know which parts of what engines are shared with what, and how you can bodge things.

 

Goes with the territory of assembling rides with big ol' spanners and wiring up 4000 bulbs in the pissing rain I guess.

I had to go to the pub at lunchtime and there was this fine Minor in the car park. Never seen it around before and it parped off soon after I got there, but top marks for winter use; those rear wings don't lie.

I noticed the other day that my mother's hole punch that she uses for making greetings cards and sundry other crafting activities has got her maiden name scratched onto it...

 

Which makes it a pre-'67 model.
