What would your driveway look like 20 years ago?

It was one of these indentical to this on an F plate I remember it was a bugger to get parts for as it was a changeover year to large bumper and the engine was also changed.

I remember I bought a B plate MK2 golf gti as mechanically it was the same and nabbed the gearbox and head off it for the cabriolet.post-9282-0-46860800-1491851117_thumb.jpeg

I also had a Saab 90 which really was a lovely car but I doubt many are about now as it was a rarity when new which was in this colour with these wheels.

It was a kind of cut and shut version of a 900 and 99.

Plus I had a couple of non pineapple beetles (71 1302 & 1200 76) which looked something like this.

This was before the scene tax and a tidy beetle could be had for under £800 out of the local papers but both were horrible in the winter as the heaters were complete shite.

I'd have had a 1970 Volvo 145 and a 1980 Saab 900 Turbo, which are the closest 1997 equivalents of The Volvo and The Aero. Awesome!

Rewinding my driveway to 20 years ago....

I took a bit of a liberty with the smaller Morris as they weren't knocking out too many passenger cars in 1943.    I would be quite happy to go back 20 years for that lot although I might cash in the VW scene tax...

Unfortunately, my driveway 20 years ago was non-existent, I just used to monopolise the limited space they gave you with a council flat....excuse the steam-driven photograph.

Hmm. Talbot was dormant in 1970, so there is no direct equivalent to the Express... however, Google suggests the Fiat 238E is the ancestor of the current Sevel vans, so...

Working this out mathematically..

Current pickup.

Last iteration of the Dodge Challenger was a badge-engineered one of these..

Renault-8_Gordini_1300-1967-hd.jpg

The Gordini 8 would be about the closest to the GTA today.

Not a bad selection tbh. I would be happy with that :D

Actually, now you mention it, the Landcrab is a better fit.  Though I propose it be brush painted in Aconite rather than Black Tulip.  Not prepared to give up my fictional P6 for a Moggy though.

well i'm sorry but there is NO WAY IN THE FAPPIN WORLD that a 400 is a sucessor to a p6!

so with that in mind i might let you off with a dolopofshite but only a 1500hl !

In reality, in 1997 I was 1, turning 2 in November. Obviously, I didn't have a car.

Old Man had a white Capri 1.6 Laser with a fucked diff and the mother had a maroon mk2 Fiesta 1.1L. Later in the year we PX'd the Capri for an N-reg K11 Micra auto, and Old Man got the Fez.

The Micra was uncomfortable and got chopped in for a CVT Fiesta.

Whoops.

Anyway, fantasy land is more fun.

However, in our case it's an interesting one.

An absurdly high spec 09/58 Cooper S doesn't really have an equivalent in 1989/F Rover Mini, the 1.3i and Sportspack weren't around.

Closest logical answer in my head:

photo.JPG

Metro Turbo. I bet they didn't come in auto though.

Old Man has a 1996/N Audi A4 2.6 quattro.

27823058211_4cf7cb8229_c.jpg

Again, there's no equivalent from 1976, we're three or four years away from getting any quattro at all. It's either a 50, an 80 1.6, or an early C2 100.

Seeing as the A4 has some performance, and six cylinders, let's call it a 100.

1976-100-1.jpg

As for me...

well I have the R8 of H8.

32010129533_8bb5d6dc00_c.jpg

1974. Well, I don't think an R8 200 equates to a P6 2000 in the slightest, nice as it is.

Thinking Ronda, and going back through the SD3 and Acclaim, logically we end up with:

1200px-Triumph_1500TC_Nov_1973.JPG

a 1500TC.

So the 05 Civic would be a '85 Civic, but mine is last of the outgoing model which I guess back in the day would be a late Acclaim. Probably a CD, because my car is top spec. (HLS pictured for the correct blue colour).

1.jpg

The '77 Dolly 1300 was the base spec Triumph, in '57 there was no base spec Triumph that'd be a Standard. Base spec would be a Standard Eight, yuck.

Standard%20Eight%201956%20front.jpg

The '76 Dolly 1850 would be a posher Standard, presumably a Pennant. They didn't come in yellow, cream over blue as is as close as you get...

1958-Standard-Pennant.jpg

Frankly I'd prefer to wait a few years and have a Herald and Vitesse!

I may regret this but I need to morph 3 cars.

Number 1: 2014 Skoda Octavia vrs. I can't get a mk1 vrs in 1994 but I want a quick, decent sized hatchback from a non-posh brand. Nissian Primeria egt then.

XSP_7658.jpg

Number 2: 2000 Ford Puma, got to be a Fiesta XR2

Ford%20Fiesta%20XR2%20(4).jpg

Number 3: 1974 Datsun 260Z, tricky, mid 50's 2 seater? I'm going to pick a Triumph TR3

Hmm. Can't think of a direct predecessor to the Skoda, my current daily.

post-5243-0-73142700-1491944695_thumb.jpg

The nearest thing to a 13 year old black sporty Skoda in 1997 would probably have been a mk1 Rapid. Hmm yes please...

post-5243-0-47939800-1491944900_thumb.jpg

Or, if we think of the Octy VRS as a rebodied Mk4 Golf GTi, a mk1 GTI Campaign would do fine...

post-5243-0-97965100-1491945022_thumb.jpg

Again in 1997 there would have been no real predecessor to our 10 year old C Max.

post-5243-0-30197000-1491945413_thumb.jpg

So the nearest would have been a grey Mk4 Escort. With the C Max being a Zetec, the Escort LX would have probably been a fair comparison.

post-5243-0-87016800-1491945584_thumb.jpg

And for the Mercedes. A combination of the smallest Mercedes-Benz available with a roughly 2.5 litre straight six motor in brown...

post-5243-0-01132500-1491945738_thumb.png

Would, at 24 years old in 1997, be a W114 250.

Re the octy VRS, what about the Seat Toledo GT mk1? A very similar design concept

Good point. However as I've probably given the OP far too much thought and taken the 20 years ago thing too literally (shouldn't drink during the week), the Toledo would have to date from 1984 to be the same age as my Octy is now. Although a mk1 Ibiza SXi might just squeeze in. I like those...

Mike has a 1990 Toyota Supra and a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer estate, stock photo for the latter here, but it's the same colour and everything.

1997 Mike has also, amazingly, got himself a Toyota Supra and a Mitsubishi Lancer estate!

My 1990 Renault 19 would be a 1970 Renault 6.

The 1994 Fiat Tipo I've just sold would be a 1974 Fiat 128 3P (except no way would that have lasted to 1997, that's silly, I was very much an adult (ish) back then and didn't see any of those).

The Micra I've just bought would be a 1980 Datsun Cherry.

Our year old Corsa would be a 1996 Corsa B CDX.
