What would your driveway look like 20 years ago?

When I see pictures older car people put up of themselves with their chod that they owned in their youth, it got me thinking - if you were to go back in time 20 years ago with the equivelent cars, what would your drive way look like?

Mine would go something like:

OK, I know I've put up a picture of a Daimler Vanden Plas, but I think of my Sovereign as being one for some reason. Plus, the 4.0 XJ8s tend to hum and wuffle in the same way the old school V12 Jags did...

Wasn't able to find a green 18 break, soz.

I feel I would have been much cooler 20 years ago...

If this won't encourage us to preserve our shite, nothing will!

From your pictures I think the answer to the question is :

Better.

Hmm... in 1997... I'd have had a 1979 Escort estate on bricks for 2 months, whilst knocking about in a 1984 Granada and a 1983 Escort.

Before I got my licence, so it would have been my Dad's car. Not entirely sure what it would have been, probably this:

By now I'm living at what was my grandparent's house, so the driveway had one of these in it

20 years ago I had a pushbike and a micro scooter so the current driveway then (based on +20 year old equivalents) would go something along the lines of:

'82 mk1 polo

'77 Volvo 145

'57 Mercedes ponton

'73 Nissan skyline gtr

Which would be nice

Yes SEAT were still making the 850 in 1979 so perfect match for our 1999 Arosa.

Not sure about this

My daily is a 12 year old vectra sri = 1984 cavalier sri.

I've a 19 year old mx5 = 1978 mgb roadster

16 year old lupo = 1981 mk1 polo

16 year old fiesta = 1981 mk1 fiesta

15 year old pug partner van = 1982 citroen acadiane

2017 sees me with a 37 year old Austin saloon and a 23 year old Rover saloon.

post-5335-0-51673000-1491765271_thumb.jpg

That probably puts me in a shabby, weirdly coloured 1960 Princess and a shiny red with vinyl roof (but small engine and manual gearbox) 1974 P6.  These are the closest examples I could find.

Not sure if I like my current driveway or my 1997 driveway better.

Ooo, Angrydicky's 1997 driveway is going to be interesting.  I bet one of them ends up being horse drawn.

Interesting concept. I currently have two Rover 75s, both of which are 16 years old. So in 1997 my cars would have to date from 1981. Realistically that means an SD1.

That doesn't really work for me, so I'm going to say a Princess.

Oh that's an easy question to answer as I know what I was doing this time twenty years ago.

A 1991 Cavalier Sri. My daily driver.

A bright red Series 3 Jag XJ12 with chrome arches. Bought on a whim. Full of filler and weighed in the day Tony Blair won the 1997 General Election.

Whatever Range Rover I was tarting up and selling at the time.

An 1982 RS1600i that had been in hibernation outside my house after a driving ban in 1994.

Here's the number one song at the time.

in 1997 , many of the people that drove, say , this.post-17414-0-75582700-1491769260_thumb.jpeg

would have embraced the music and culture of the time, might even have had a haircut like , say, this

post-17414-0-30987600-1491769390_thumb.jpeg.

so obviously a group of blokes owning the equivalent today would aspire to look like this

2009 VW Jetta currently, 1997s equivalent would be a 1989 VW Jetta, I think I'd rather have that actually!

If I was to go through all my previous cars, I think their equivalents would be better. Particularly my last car, brand new 15 plate Corsa 1.4 SRi. 20years back would be 1995, and a brand new Corsa B 1.4 SRi, much cooler!!

Edited to say Yous are all a bunch of spanners

Sadly my driveway would have a Mk2 Mondongo 1.8 LX in it, but 20 years ago I had a Fiesta Popular Plus Mk2

Posted

Car-wise it'd inevitably be cooler, in that our 29 year old Citroen estate would be a DS Safari, and our Peugeot cab would be a 304.

Bikes is different though, as there's no equivalent to the Helix. It was the first of its kind.

Wouldn't it be a 1982 Cortina? If you've got a 52 plate Mondeo now, 1997s equivalent would be a 15yr old Ford equivalent.
