GEN 3 Civic - Are they wanted by anyone other than us?

3 years... THREE FRIGGING YEARS ago, I said to the mother of an acquaintance "let me know if you sell your car LOL" - and she's only gone and remembered.

I'm balls deep into other cars at the moment, and whilst I have fond memories of the one we had as a child I don't really want it.

(Vendor photos, so no laughing please)

It's just failed its MOT - and I don't weld - so I'd need to budget in a good few quid to put it back on the road.  I'm not that interested in making a profit, mainly keeping something like this on the road.  Any ideas what they're worth?  I think the greatest annoyance is that it's an auto (which I didn't know).

Any thoughts and input appreciated.

They're not worth much, and they do like to rot. I seriously rate this (and the fourth) generation of Civic though. They're utterly ace.

The MOT fail sheet doesn't look too bad. And it's deffo the sort of thing that should be given a chance.

EF Civic's are very popular, but it needs to be the right model, like an Si.

Aye. This one, being an auto, will never be hot property. I'm staggered at how much tidy fourth-gens seem to be fetching now.

I'd fix that, but I like automatic Hondas. I could see it coming to a sad end on the blue forum, a cack handed lowering job and some shit wheels.

I bet it'd be a fun thing to chuck about standard.

edit: I have the HBOL for it too!

Yes save it. Spare it the 'yo JDM' drifts style treatment.

I'd not want to waste my own money on that! There was a gorgeous 87 Corolla at a meet this week. Only the front wheels were rotated to approximately 88.7% camber. The 185 width tyres were an absolute waste, because not half of them would ever touch the road.

Fuckwits.

I'd take great pleasure in issuing a fail if I was a MOT inspector for stretched tyres and camber fuck abouts. It just shows how little these people know about cars.

The more I think about it, the more I might just pass or move it on immediately as "Spares/Repairs".

If everyone was foaming at the gash then I'd gladly do a cost price raffle - as long as it was always passed around the fold and not sold for grotesque profit.

It's dead here ATM so I'll give it a week.

It's probably worth saving but a 1.3 auto really isn't something I'd be wasting my money on.

I'd like an auto one of these, I imagine it'd be ace for ragging about london. They always seemed airy and spacious inside to me. Something to do with the dash

Great little cars

I had one when I was 20 or so. Ran it for a couple of months. It was nippy and so good on fuel if you drove steady. Seemed to go forever on fumes.

A cracked windscreen meant it wasn`t worth putting through an MoT so I ran it round the oval in the non contact formula and won by a country mile. Got pulled into scrutineering as it was so good. They checked it over to make sure it wasn`t 4x4. Seriously.

Head gasket went the next time I took it out but can`t remember what caused that, don`t think it was the cars fault

This is well worth saving, despite the auto box although with the light weight and such a good engine I should imagine it is still decent to drive.

If there's interest, then I'll get it fixed up and we'll keep it on here.

If not, I'll just punt it as spares/repairs to the RR crew.

Had one of these in NZ, great little car. And rust free too owing to lack of salt on the roads. I will have to see if I can find any pics for inspiration.

Interestingly was badged as a type R but with a 12 valve engine running on 91 octane fuel it would never be mistaken for sporty

WHY OH WHY are these things always friggin Autos.

Because all of the manual ones that aren't rotten are snapped up and modified! The cheapest ones are always ex-giffer auto's with various bits of rot.

The 3rd gen wasn't as popular in the Honda 'scene' due to lack of aftermarket parts and not many of them around. The 4th gen/EF shape is a popular base for VTEC engine swaps and theres a big community backing for them on places like 4GUK.

We know a song about these, don't we Children?

It's 50 quid basically. Sad because it's a car from an era where cars were capable of lasting 30 years with care yet still drove well (see also: Cavalier, Accord, Carina, E34 etc)

Not an auto - unusual for a Japan import. Probably failed it's Shaken test and got bridged (meaning it's too shit for Japan but the Kiwis will buy anything).

Considering this was taken in 2002 I would expect it is bean tins by now. Although NZ'ers do keep their shite running for much longer than we do so maybe it is still hooning about some South Island village? Hope so, nice wee thing it was.

Front bumper wasn't quite straight but I think that was an extra cost option for the Japan market....

Actually that reminds me - MIL had an identical one but that was a full fat 1600 gti model. That one was an auto and drove brilliantly except for the exhaust manifold shield rattling at 2000 rpm (basically 70kph which was the A road limit) which was fucking annoying.

Any movement on this? Is it being restored or broken?
