VW Sharan tdi - time to say goodbye

All 3 codes are MAP sensor related, open or short to ground.

 

Have you unplugged the MAP when poking about?

 

Sorry I don't know where the MAP is located on this engine, probably on the inlet manifold or intake somewhere.

 

Worth giving it a clean with brake cleaner, and also check the wiring.

Thanks, I had the map sensor unplugged but not with the engine running. I cleaned it too with some degreaser as I didn't have any carb cleaner. I've cleared the code. If it comes back I might just get a new sensor as they're not expensive.

I got quite a bit done today. Touched up a couple of small rusty areas on the inside edges of the sills. Changed the oil and filter. The old oil looked quite dirty. Fixed the aerial which is on the back window as the clip had come off. Took off the parking sensor I think is at fault and ordered a new one. Tried to change the pollen filter but couldn't get the wiper arms off so ordered a small puller. Some more Mr muscle in the turbo. Lots of burns as it ran down my arms, nasty stuff.

 

Went for another drive and marvelled at how clever the gearbox is. If you put it in manual mode and select a gear it will override you as you slow down and also change up if the revs get too high. Very clever. It seems to change quite smoothly although the lever can need a good pull at certain times.

 

I've still got a slight coolant leak from the hose that goes to the egr. Can anyone tell me how I can identify which hose it is? Might need to go the dealer I think.

Thanks for the help. I've had a read through those sites and others. I think it might be no.2 on the diagram Krujoe provided but as I'm not 100% I might call in at the VW garage and see if they have it. The tape i used has started to come undone due to the heat.

^That diagram is a pre-PD TDI, if it's not the same try http://www.oemepc.com/ for yours.

Yeah it pre pd, its also possibly american version of engine, cos i don't think any uk ve style motors got the egr cooler, but could be talking bollox. Deffo check the number on the site Dave Q suggests, its a good site, and same as what the dealers use.

Yep, that was just an example of a coolant system component diagram - I didn't put much effort into finding the correct one for this car.

That pipe in the ebay link looks the same size at both ends, so any Shiter with a good hoard of random tat should have a bit of pipe to do the job. Does it really need all those kinks and bends just so?

But if the break is not near an end of it, then I agree - put a length of metal pipe inside with hose clips.

A quick update on this...

 

I've been using it for the last couple of days including a good 50 miles of motorway and no limp mode! It does seem to smoke a bit when you first set off but not too bad. I used Mr muscle in the egr and exhaust side of the turbo but that's not as good as getting it right into the heart of the turbo which failed me. I've also used some turbo cleaner and injector cleaner.

 

It's taught me about vcds and fault codes though which is a bonus. No faults for the engine at the moment. I managed to find out which parking sensor was faulty and ordered a new one for £8. Put that on tonight and working parking sensors! They make a big difference as I have to parallel park on our street.

 

Managed to locate the correct egr hose from trade parts specialists in Leicester. I went to the VW garage first and they told me they don't do spare parts anymore so sent me to TPS. They're not cheap though. The hose was £31 and I asked for a quote for pads and discs for the front, £208!

 

I'm enjoying driving this. Love the high up driving position and the space. The family love it too. Very relaxing to drive. Averaging about 35mpg around the doors so expect 40ish on a run which isn't too bad as it's quite heavy and the autobox probably doesn't help. It needs a good long run before I declare a victory on the limp mode though.

How much have you spent getting it to this stage?

The various turbo cleaning products, service items, parking sensor, hose and a few other bits, around £120 so not bad at all. Just front brakes to sort now and then might treat it to some car mats! The tyre's staying up too although had to change the battery, but luckily had a spare one.

Yep, manual To auto is fun, I went for the clutch pedal yesterday despite having the gooner for 2 weeks, and still go for the gear lever before remembering and just sort of stroking the shifter for a few seconds...

 

Its the weekend tomorrow, ecp will have a 30% sale on...

I did the old Mr Muscle trick on a pre-PD B5 Audi I had a while back. It pulled like a train and never went into limp mode again. EGR bolts were a bitch though iirc.

It's a common, cheap and effective fix when the turbo vanes are layered in crap.

I now find it hard going from auto to manual, rather than the other way around that happened at first. I forget to clutch, especially when having to come to a quick stop!

 

I found putting my left foot under the brake pedal much better. That way when I come to lift my foot, it hits the bottom of the pedal reminding me that I'm doing it wrong.

Quick update on this. I really like it! It's ideal for family duties. We're currently away on holiday in it. I like the way you can configure the seats just how you want them so, for example, I took 3 of them out for our holiday to give lots of space for luggage, kids bikes etc. Put a gap between the kids so they can't fall out (didn't work). It also proved useful fully loaded with topsoil and turf last weekend. Handled that very well with all the seats out.

 

I've only had the limp mode once in the last 1000 miles, at the end of a long motorway journey. Turned it off and on again and it was then fine. I've still got some turbo cleaner to run through it, Archoil 6400D-Max, which has good reviews.

 

There's no spare wheel but I wasn't worried as not had a puncture in years. Guess what, I had a puncture. I had to drive 5 miles home which trashed the tyre. Picked up a partworn for £30 which will do for now but it's not the right load rating. Needs to be 'extra load' apparently, 97, and it's a 93. I'll get a couple of new tyres on it when funds allow.

 

I've done a few jobs on it including a service, tidied up some surface rust on the wheel arches, fixed a door handle, some spray underseal on a couple of places underneath. It's been waxoyled though so all quite good underneath. I also made myself some temporary mats out of some old carpet like a proper giffer.

 

It's no rocket ship and pressing the accelerator to the floor just makes more noise and the mpg reading to plummet. There's also no hiding it's bulk in the corners as it likes to understeer. I've changed my driving style to suit. Much nicer to cruise along at 65/70 and use the accelerator gently which encourages it to change up sooner. I've been getting 42mpg max and down to 35 in traffic which I'm pleased with.

 

Other things I like are the electric tilt windows you control from the front which help with getting airflow through the car, and the parking sensors which I've never had on a car before but are great especially on something this big when I need to do a lot of street parking.

 

It's the highest mileage car I've owned at 203k but it drives really well and I can see myself keeping it for a while

Old carpet runners or offcuts? I did the same for the Safrane as I'm too mingebag to buy proper mats!

They're off cuts Rob, from the lounge carpet. They were only meant as a temporary fix but they work well actually! Probably better quality than most car mats.

      The Car.
      My dependable daily for two FTP-free years. Ex-JohnK and Bramz. 
      1.4 Rti run-out model, lots of toys. 
      Cheap tax and cla$$ic policy friendly (£140pa, Carole Nash. A.Flux quoted similar).
      Tested until 31 May 2020, advised on two back tyres.
      Not yet 62,000 on the dial. Likely to be SORN'd before June. V5 here, with loads of history.
      New oil and filter last week.
      Good batt, exhaust, brakes etc. There are a few minor niggles, I've just lived with it. Character, innit.
      Squishy-comfort velour in fine fettle. (Almost) everything works.
      The bodywork scrubs up well but there's some bits of rust if you really go looking. It doesn't stop it being a respectable motor… until… last week one of my favourite brothers rubbed a tractor down the side, damaging two doors and the mirror.

      All still work fine, and I still have the (undamaged) plastic strip from the door. I don't have the arsedness to try improving it cosmetically and I'm ready for a change of daily anyway. The worst would likely push out from inside. As would the small bit on the arch – it's single skinned there. Until that happened, nobody has ever turned their nose up at it, and it has attracted a lot of positive conversation.

      I have acquired a vehicle. This is when I was trying to fix it so I could drive home.

       
      The car was offered FOC to the Rover 800 Owners' Club. They weren't really in a position to take it on directly, so it ended up being pointed my way. It's an 820 base model - SU carburettor-fed 2-litre O-Series! BAe was the first owner, for eight weeks, then it was sold to the father of the chap I bought it off, who sadly passed away last year.
       
      It has covered 105k, has a fair bit of rust in a few places, but is pretty tidy and looks bloody fantastic. It has a few weeks of MOT, delicious dealer plates, unexpected lumbar adjustment and electric front windows. One piece of wood on the dash, none on the doors, manual tilt/slide sunroof, spoiler!
       
      It had barely moved since July last year, but sadly, I got a whiff of hot brakes on the M55. I pulled onto the hard shoulder and the nearside rear wheel was smoking. I limped at 30mph down the hard shoulder to the next junction, which was not fun. I then limped gently back to the vendor, where I stripped the brake, used entirely the wrong grease (as it was all he had) to try and improve things, considered this a success and drove 180 miles home.
       
      I seem to have mostly taken photos of the rear.

       
      There is a petrol station shot, but you'll have to wait. I developed a horrible migraine on the way back and had to stop for a while. Most unlike me. 
       
      Eventually made it back.

       
      It's all a bit complicated, but the idea is I have it for a bit and at some point, it'll end up back with the club. I think the plan is to sell it to raise some funds for charity longer term, but sadly, it could also do with a set of calipers and tyres, so finances need to be reconsidered I think. The brakes are SHITE. It could be air from boiling brake fluid, so I'll see if a bleed helps, but I reckon all the calipers are buggered.
