NEW New new new New top gear ON HOLD, RIP?

"Are you watching Top Gear?"

"No, I hate it."

"Oh, OK then, fair enough."

^ Yes I saw a clip of Harris/MLB trying* not to break a basket of eggs in one. IIRC Harris has tested a 2cv before on his you tube thing, and top gear has form with 2cvs /runways /jet engines

I think he actually owns a ripple bonnet one- so can’t be all bad despite appearances!

I do know the green one blown away was basically dragged out of a scrap heap sans engine and given a blow over paint job.

What I do miss with top gear is any actual straight reporting. Messing about for the sake of it gets a little tedious now.

I do like the old car challenges but wonder why they have to wreck them all the time not just get them working properly. Much miffed about wrecking the cx.

The Italian supercar challenge was the highpoint I think.

But yes, I will be watching.

Yes, the glory days for the first round of new Top Gear was then they were doing stuff like hurling Richard Hammond in a car, into a vat of water to see the best way to escape, or when they deliberately crashed a Renault Megane to see how safe it was. It was fun, but there was actually a serious point to some of it too. The BL special was a bit much for me, then the camping one with the CX megahotel thing. Final straw was Marina-gate. That's when it became Clarkson's class battle, ripping the piss out of folk who just like fairly ordinary cars.

You see Harris drifting, but you never see MLB drifting...

We don't know if MLB can actually drift though to be fair to him. See: Johhny Smith learning to drift on Fifth Gear a while back, not easy stuff to master.

I'm happy to give it time for the interactions between the presenters to start seeming a bit less forced, overall it's still a decent watch with good car bits, even though it's got a long way to go to be anything like as good as peak CMH - around the time of the first lot of amphibious cars IMO.

This. The old three have been working together for years and years, the new lot can't possibly interact like the old trio can.

The 2CV in the future episode is Chris' car, same one he made a video about on YouTube. He's got a LHD 205 Rallye too so as much as he clearly enjoys playing with press loaner hyper cars he's a proper car person and a good presenter too. He must living the flippin' dream right now.

The Beeb might be surprised if the show went a bit straight rather than trying to ape the comedy of the previous trio - which wasn't as frequent as you'd think beyond the personal banter often used to get over some subtle differences between brands. It's now mostly puerile from what I've seen, I just fast forwards on the tablet and I think both episodes took less than half an hour to watch.

CH has a lot to offer but seems that the 'comedy' prevents him from having much chance.

The answer is so bollock shatteringly obvious it's visible from space.

If you don't like Top Gear or [insert programme name here] /don't like the format/don't like the presenters/don't like the script then don't watch it.

YouTube exists for a reason. If you're unhappy with what's available, get out there and shoot stuff yourself. There niches within niches upon niches on YouTube so making/finding the content you want shouldn't be an issue.

You'll all obviously be doing it for the love rather than the money so millions of subscribers shouldn't matter; the Saga of the J reg Proton must be told and is more important than anything else in the history of the universe.

If people's ideas on here are so brilliant, they'll have no problem at all in pitching to a production company and getting a series made. Right?

I do. I still think I'm within my rights to criticise TG though. If you don't like negative comments about TG, don't read them. ;-)

Aye, I know, I watch it.

I don't like Top Gear either, I'm just sick of the predictable screed of whinge that appears whenever a new series farts around.

That’s rather harsh. I’ve watched every episode of top gear since the early eighties.

It’s usually very enjoyable, but occasionally a bit repetitive and stale of ideas.

Yep, me too from the early Nineties.

10 mins in and it's a pile of shit, for fucks sake can't they just review a car without the big pile of bollocks wanky dodgy manga graphics and terrible scripting

I dunno. You can't love cars and damage them pointlessly as in tonight's film. It was not even funny. The Mazda is a masterpiece - I often think of all the effort then went into cars, design, construction etc. Seemed a bit crass alas. I hardly watch it.

That was the best Top Gear episode I can remember - would be happy for an entire series to come from Japan.

As for the lack of reporting, car reviews etc.... I think the figures speak for themselves, back before the internet existed Old Top Gear with William Woollard and Tiffany Dell and Tony Mason etc was pulling in a couple of million viewers a week.

Now, New New (New) New Top Gear is dragging in many times that, whilst competing with the internet/social media/youtube/hundreds of TV channels

Twatting around, higher quality shooting, "bantz" etc is just worth more money, so I don't think we'll ever go back to a 30 minute show featuring a review of the latest indicator bulb technology followed by a test drive of a new small hatchback in which they compare the size of the digits on the fan speed control with its rivals. It's only interesting to idiots like us, and we're not paying the bills.

TBH, if you prefer the Youtube channels - then watch them. Absolutely sod all wrong with that, and actually it's the way the whole TV industry needs to be going. If they could do a Top Gear channel where you pick and choose which bits you want to watch from some 5-10 minute segments, then the reduced costs of that format could be spent on doing more segments to choose from.

Correct.

Apart from the wanton damage to the two cars, the rest of tonight's JDM special was pretty much pornographic. Bonus DJ Shadow soundtrack to the LC500 / Type R test, too.

Best new new Top Gear yet, by a long way.

You've seen the future too then?  :-D

I watched the second series of TG with CH, MLB etc. I thought it was very good.

If Chris Harris would tone down the Clarkson impression a bit he'd be really good. But as he stands, his vids are good - the 2CV one is great. But I love early 2CV's. When I think of all the dead ones I saw in rural France in the seventies. Dusty, beached old DS19's never to run again.  :-(

Hmm. New Civic might be fast but is indeed gopping.

Good contribution from Ried.

Not bad overall

I loved the Clarkson era, but have watched since about '91. I think it is getting better after the awful Chris Evans series, (although I still say he was a scapegoat for many problems that were not his fault, as well as the ones that were)  I don't like the pointless destruction of cars, like tonights rx7 and gtt  ,but it was pretty entertaining. The celebrity bit was often a bit of a gamble with Clarkson, but he seemed to bring out humour and interest even when I had never heard of the guest. Nowadays it seems to drag, and suck the life out of the show so this week was an improvement (unless I dozed off and missed a dull one!)

The 2cv clips worry me a bit. I know that Harris has one and seems to be a fan, but I am concerned it could be something like the Reliant Robin episode, which while funny, featured a lot of senseless destruction. On the other hand, if they treat them respectfully, it could see the values going up and becoming more desirable to thieves. I suppose we will have to wait and see.

If you liked the car porn on main TG I'd suggest checking out Extra Gear for Fairlady 240Z action.

Notwithstanding the unnecessary damage to the two star cars, that was the best episode of Top Gear for a long, long time.

I have not watched a single episode of new new Top Gear, and I don't intend on doing so.

It was the best episode yet mainly due to the subject matter. But it could have been so much better. That auction was mental. I wanted a proper look around the yard. At one point there was a Renault 4 behind them and they didn't bat an eyelid. But then I guess it's not Autoshite TV is it?

I'd like to have seen more of the Toyota Crown Taxi too. And maybe it's just me but I find the kei cars interesting too because we don't get most of them here. It's a completely different world.

Rory's bit was good though. Makes the average UK cruise look tame and if you're going to have a supercar a genuine Le Mans Porsche 962 is about as super as it gets, at least to people of my age. That is such a beautiful car especially in the Rothmans livery. Shame he blew it up. That must have been expensive!

That 962 was mental, apparently one of the Rossi family had one of the Martini Racing Porsche 917s turned into a road car which if anything would be even more unhinged.

Ok, I'll give it a go. Sounds far better than the 'hilarious' trailer.

Harris uses his own 2CV in that episode, and the 2CV race community was involved too. I have high hopes.
