spring clip ... where I can source a replacement?

You already know the answer to that one!

There's probably a collection in a tub in the red car, I'll have a look for you when I'm back and stick it in an envelope for you.

Also, send me a photo of your engine bay, with a finger pointing to that sensor, and I'll see if I can score you that as well.

At least half of cars with keep-fit windows will have much the same spring so any scrapyard should be able to come up with one.

Incidentally you should fit the new spring to the handle then push the handle onto the spindle. Seems obvious but it took me about ten years to realise that.

Haha! My mate was amazed when I was helping him reassemble his mk5 Fiesta one day and I popped the clip onto the winder handle and then clicked it onto the door.

His face was a picture and he said he usually spent an age trying to refit them in situ!

Ahhh, nice one Joe. I will do that - we had a stab at the sensor but couldn't get the lower screw out of it (didn't want to mangle the thread/break the sensor), they're Philips heads, bit daft really.

Mk 3 Golfs have the easiest fit window winders in the universe. They are fuggin ace :)

Just pull the plastic collar down and pull the winder off. That is it.

Another day, another thing.

Got an email this morning saying that the sensor I ordered is out of stock, and my £12 was refunded - Rimmers it is then.

Went out to a part worn tyre place to see what they had, and elected to buy some Uniroyals instead.

I've sent some images to DMB to see what they can do for me, too.

I was charity shopping in Didsbury on Sunday and spotted a car radio, after a think I decided to drop in and get it today as I was passing anyway.

Who was it that said everyone's hand an Xplod head unit at some point?

£20, boxed, with bezel, wiring adapters, removal tools, instructions, everything. Even the original receipt for £59.99 from Halfords Bournemouth in 2009!

The factory radio sounds alright, but the bezel is missing, it's hopeless at picking up stations, has no potential for aux in (aside from crappy cassette adapters), and so on. It's nice listening to tapes but they don't half take up some space. Also, I'm not keen on the volume dial, it's too hard to use while driving.

The new radio even had the removal pins for the old one in the box. Can't remove the radio in P though...

New one in, no trouble. Looks nice and modest, sounds good, and doesn't light up all over the place - good job all round!

Now off to collect a tie rod and alternator belt from ECP, laterz.

Now you've got that knob all the way over to the right, are you still feeling the cold draft? (fnarr)

Bringing it to Glossop tonight?

We could bang out some CHOOONZ in the car park like genuine reprobates - I'll bring my speed garage CD.

Yes to both.

I had one of these in my R8 back in the day. After that car was disposed of, I had it in The Volvo for a couple of years. It looked and sounded great in both cars:

I still have it somewhere, as although it broke in 2006, I hope to have it mended one day.

Sensor replaced. Tracking needs setting now, and I think I need to take the ECU fuse out as it's still CHECK ENGINEing after doing the hazard one.

I've lost a wheel trim too, time to get a couple from eBay.

FUCK OFF CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

I'm out of ideas. Might replace the spark plugs seeing as I've done everything else. They're reasonably cheap anyway.

Also, can someone explain to me how the headlight stalk works? It seems to be random chance what happen when you twist it: it sometimes it gives dipped headlights but often it's main beam.

Posted

its an owd car if you pull or push the stalk accidentally it will stay on main beam even when lights are off so when you turn on headlights vóila main beam (you can still do this with a spaceship civic!)

re OMGLIGHTOFDOOM does the speedometer jump sometimes or does the torque converter NOT lock upevery time?

seemingly there is a switch built into the speedo at 45mph which triggers the gearbox to lock the torque converter- these can fail and the check light comes on to warn of the doom

read all about it here http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/our-cars/mikes-rover-416-gsi/cars-mikes-416-torque-speaking-soon./

No idea what torque converter lockup is like so can't comment on it.

Needle is very slightly wobbly at 30mph a la BX but less pronounced - and it's random when the light of doom comes on, it's usually a couple of miles after I start driving. Resetting the ECU makes it behave for slightly longer than usual but not much else.

Old Man seems to be all out of ideas, he's gone a bit armchair mechanic. We know the IAT sensor is okay, but he's looked at the circuit diagrams and is suspicious of the coolant temp sensor as it's on the same circuit apparently. We have a spare from the Clelands to test.

Looking at the fault light, it's either reading '10' or '1' and I can't be sure which, but I'm inclined to think it's '1' as it does a short flash, then a pause, short flash, pause, infintely.

'1' is O2 sensor so I'll be checking that too.

I fitted Nightbreakers and the mats today. Both are good.

These are the mats I got - they're the perfect colour for the grey R8 interior, and fit perfectly on the floor too. Would reccommend:

Headlights:

Twist one click forwards - sidlights

Twist one more click forwards - dipped beam

Pull towards self until clicks - main beam

If you don't then pull the stalk towards yourself to cancel main beam, when you twist for dipped you'll get main instead.

A small square of black electrical tape would obscure the engine light to make it less annoying until you can find out what's causing it.

Edited to add:  wobbly speedo at 30mph is a TADTS.  Mine does it less when I use the car more so it's potentially heat/lubrication of the cable I suspect.

You know how it acts like it's slipping the clutch at low speed?

Once the torque convertor locks up it doesn't do that & the revs always match the speed like in a manual.

Cheers! I've worked this out now - I keep accidentally clicking the full beam switch when I use the flasher.

I'm really not sure it's the speedo. Old Man keeps waffling on about electronic speed sensors (but I'm not sure if he know what he's talking about), after all. I'll check the lambda and all the sensors and such, but I might have to admit defeat at some point pretty soon.

It was suggested that the spark plugs being badly gapped could throw up errors so I'll be changing those too as soon as I know the right size. Old Man is insistent that they're fine because he gapped them - but he said the same thing about his A4 and there was a noticeable difference when they were replaced. For the sake of £15 I don't see the point in not changing them as they're the only service item that's not been replaced at this point.

C15s don't have headlights, they have dim & bright marker lights.

I didn't think they were that bad, but then I'm used to a Land Rover and rarely drive at night

Posted

Torque converter lock up will be felt as a slight reduction in revs at 50mph ish. I reckon O2 sensor is likely. And easy enough to replace.

Posted

I might give it one, then.

I'm starting to get sceptical of Old Man's 'it works 'cause I've put a multimeter across it' method of testing.

That worked fine before ecus.

My C15 had the old 'globe' type headlamp bulbs in when I got it, which were hopeless. Surely by 1998 it must have been the last new vehicle on earth to be equipped with those?

I sorted this by adapting* the headlamps to accept H4 bulbs, after which they were 18778934759000% better (not hard).

*I stuck the bulbs in with gaffa tape

+3 on O2 sensor. It will be borked

Mine had them on a y, the spares of foads had them on a w and I think his 53 plater did too
