Er...wow...

I think I once saw a W123 Mercedes with very little outer shell being driven in Syria once, Fatha_Sterling said it was being driven to be repainted or summat so not so unusual to see that.

I once drove a Peugeot 206 with a missing passenger side wing which I didn't know about around the block, lucky to not be caught!

I remember someone here posted about how trucks used to be driven without cabs on thier way to be fitted with cabs.

....bored over the 'festive period', but stumbled upon this 'channel' on you'tube; https://www.youtube.com/user/InvincibleExtremes

...the chaps does some serious long hardcore collectioneerin trips for parts/ to be relocated (him n his clan); hard to make sense of whats goin on at times; his firebird often has no brakes, bad tires, bad bearings n his trailor seems to shed a tyre or two - he always has a getto fix...he often packs a generator, full welding kit, n spills all his tools out on the roadside to 'get the job done'. id admire the fella, n reminisce about how RSA here were only a pipe dream inside a government advisors head about how to create a central body to promote road safety awareness n enforce them laws /have your vehicle impounded for something very minor, rather than address the woeful road network here....

...only hes travelling with his mrs n two kids on some of these 'pick ups', n his rig is less than safe...

I never understood why they make such a Herman in Europe about something you merely drive down the street.

What's the bloody big deal, for crying out loud?

In the UK, the ceiling of everything is a ridiculous 70 OMGMPH. It's a fucking joke!

I went faster on skis. And it wasn't fast.

Show me one single bloody thing I can't drive at a childish 70 OMGMPH. It's just pathetic and not a single thing else.

70 OMGMPH. Go fuck yourself.

MoT. Yeah!

70 MPH.

Wow.

Down the street.

Brilliant.

Yawn.

What can't I drive down that street?

Oh, it doesn't have speed rated tyres.

To hose myself I'm certainly not dependent on the fuckwits telling me that speed kills horseshit.

It persisted longer with buses than it did with trucks as factory fitted cabs became more common. They used to drive Bristol bus chassis regularly from their factory at Brislington to Eastern Coach Works at Lowestoft for bodying and some went even further.

I used to work at Seddon. We drove chassis from Oldham to Scarborough.

Well Ben did. I just drove them round the yard

Optare in Leeds used to have bus chassis driven to the factory.

Crash helmet and flying jacket was the uniform of choice.

I used to see bus chassis driven around Dorking, about 15 years ago.

This wouldn't work here anymore as most people look strange at you if your car has even a small bit of damage or rust, "look at that thing" type comments ensue and much nose looking down commences.

I too remember these heroes in their flying jackets and crash helmets. With a bare chassis and no speed limiters they were never hanging around either.

This last one has been posted on AS a couple of times, the last time a week or so ago, I think in the B&W thread.

Yes it was a fire victim with WMPTE after many years use as a mechanical trainer being driven to Metro Cammel (can't spell this morning) for a new body to be fitted in about 1978.

The first photo yo put up is of the last ever front engined Daimler being driven to the docks for its shipment to Hong Kong. 1971 I think.

I saw this beauty in San Francisco (Fishermans Quarter) mid last year on our honeymoon. The otherside had its wing creased in the middle from where it looks like it was bent back into position and gaffer taped on. I tried to take it discreetly on the opposite side of the street, as the owner looked* like the type that wouldn't appreciate pictures.

On the latest road kill the car they built didn't have any lights so they gaffa taped torches onto the grill. Not sure that would get past VOSA.

Posted

Actually might be able to get a daylight MOT. Not sure of the specifics but ScaryOldCortina mentioned it on a thread a while back. Apparently if you remove all the lights completely it's possible.

Quite common on track bikes that people want to be road legal too.

I drove a car with no bonnet, doors or tailgate on the road. It was about two miles from my garage to the big garage at work where it was being sprayed. I will do the same again with the Capri as you can't get the tailgate and bonnet off on your own. I wondered how I would stand if the coppers pulled me but I worked on the grounds of drive very sensibly with it looking obviously like it's about to be sprayed and hopefully any copper will understand. It helps that I work in a rough bit of town as you know there won't be any coppers around there.

I remember the village idiot (he was actually a decent fella) haring round in a Bond Equipe with the front end still on a trestle in his garden.   I can't recall it ever being reunited with it and the car soon just sat in the front garden and decayed.   The only thing that was missing, legally, were the indicators.    Looked really weird, though.

When I was a lad I'd sometimes see small groups of new Scammell chassis being driven through the town off toward the A41 / M1. At this time of year the poor bastard drivers would have only a coat, scarf and bobble hat to protect them.

Posted

Surely if there'd been an accident or they'd have had to stop quick they would have been thrown into the road a bit like in that arcade game Road Rash. Can't imagine shifts in January would have been much fun in the driving sleet either...

Posted

I keep seeing a mk2 zafira locally driving around without a front bumper, just the big metal crash bar. No front plate either

Nobody seems to care, have seen it several times in the past couple of months

Do they have some sort of roadworthyness test in America?

It varies from State to State. A lot of beards on the Chevy forum talk of stuff like not needing windscreen wipers in some states and pop riveting old road signs to the rust for floor "repairs". This is why buying chod feom the US can be emtertaining - stuff can be road legal there that wouldn't have a hope of an MOT here. But never mind, cos they ban copper brake pipes and kinder eggs 😀

That reminds me of this Sonata I saw in Florida last year, the bumper is held on with jump leads , the wing and door were gaffer taped on. When I tried to take a picture a scary Goth girl came out of a Pizza place and started shouting at me, threatening to call the cops! It was near a Saturday night classic cruise place, so I'm guessing I wasn't the first person to be a(be)mused by its condition.

I saw a Renault 11 with no front bumper, no front wings and only one headlight in Turkey a few years ago. Being driven too of course.

Actually was pretty dent free, surprisingly

Only time I've done something similar was when I changed the clutch on my MG Midget, put it all back together but left off the bonnet as wanted my dad to give me a hand putting this back on (came off OK but a bit unwieldy putting it back on single handed) when he got home. So with everything else working I went on a test drive of about 10 miles to check everything was OK.

Never really gave it a second thought (the optimism of youth) until I clocked the continuous stream of WTF looks and one chap who gesticulated wildly at me shouting, 'Your bonnet mate, you've got no bonnet' - No really? Oh well done Poirot I hadn't fucking noticed, thanks for that.
