cars that did or didn't morph very well

I think Holland and some Scandanvian countries had a few. Vauxpedia will undoubtedly tell you. But only go on there if you can afford to lose the rest of your day!

I think South Africa got them too, including a Firenza with a Chevy v8 in it.

As has (I think) been amply covered so far - almost all estates where they have saved money by keeping the saloon's rear doors (the gooner 1 and Honda posted were good examples) just look wrong.

The Pug 40x Coupes have always been the lookers of the range though.

Peugeot 206 shapeshifted horribly into sedan and estate versions.

It's a cultural and fashion thing.   Hatches and estates are popular in Europe, saloons (sedans) more popular in most other countries.   Estates are about as desirable as leprosy in the US at the moment.   Of course they are all being swept away by the CUV/crossover wave these days.

Volvo 850 was a kind of ungainly saloon to my eye but the estates were great looking things.   Torque-steering T5R for me please.

Shame this never got released...

I would have loved to see a three door Metro "breadvan"

I did a shitty "Paint" mock up once, and despite being a shitty paint mock up done by someone with the artistic capabilities of a retarded walrus I thought it looked quite good and would have rivaled the Polo breadvan.

The comparison is nicked from someone else who observed it on here a few years ago, but it's a fair one.

The back doesn't match the front.

With the exception of the baked potato ( xsara pigsasshole) I can't think of many cars where the front and back match

I don't think there's anything really questionable about that.

The rear doors have been designed specifically for the car (looking at you, Volvo 240), the curve inward between the coachline and the windows follows through down the side and the rear, the roof line is correct for an estate (P6 Tourer) and disguised in the shape of the rear side windows.

Those are ones that don't work for me-estates with saloon back doors. Volvo 240 is the classic example, and we've already had the Laguna 1 and that Civic. 306 mentioned too. ZX; dreadful. BX: only bearable because of the black frames. XM: borderline.

Nearly all modern convertibles are ugly and fat-arsed, probably because they are an afterthought. All small hatchbacks turned into estates look like they've been adapted by a bad coachbuilder to accommodate a wheelchair. All Ford coupes look like what they are, re-bodied tedium.

Things that work? I agree on the Sierra Sapphire; always thought the hatch was ugly. Mondeo mk1 too. 306 convertible. Audi 80 convertible. Laguna coupe. Did Eurovans start as vans? If so, them. R8 estate, sorry, tourer.

Not that I'm in any way a fan of t' nova, but this is a bizarre creation, you don't want five doors but want a boot?

Turning the 5 Series into a hatchback really, really didn't work

And judging by the amount you see on the roads, there's a limit as to how far a badge alone will get you

Morphing washing machines and bean tins into an actual car shaped thing called a Fiat Multipla didn`t go well

What is the rest of the worlds fascination with lobbing a boot on a perfectly normal and otherwise good car?

Jesus, there's some filth in this thread!

I LOVE these two cars. I would consider replacing the Accord with one of these...

It sold very well. Practicality > looks.

DSes are pig ugly, period. Don't parrot that popular horseshit, just say it and notice how therapeutic it is.

I'm with Junkman on this. They look like wheeled slugs.

SM's on the other hand are so lovely I'd like to take one to bed and spank it soundly.

Back in the dark ages, I had one. Again, contrary to popular folklore, it was one of the sturdiest and hard wearing cars I ever owned. A tough beast surviving unimaginable abuse.

The only negative memory I have about it is that the crumbs from my sandwiches accumulated in the cassette shaft.

Not a bad car to look at. Not pretty but generally inoffensive.

But offensiveness can always be added if the existing quantity is insufficient.
