Nissan Almera 1.5 Flare (now sadly heading for car heaven)

Hello folks

I'm not expecting a rush of interest in this, but here goes anyway

I've owned this Almera for just over 8 years, taking the mileage from around 40k to its current 172k, during this time it has been brilliantly reliable, always started and never failed to complete a journey.

Unfortunately although it runs well with no nasty noises, it burns a lot of oil, especially just after start up when it has sat for a few hours, possibly valve stem seals, it does smoke a bit the rest of the time but nothing like as much.

Was in daily use for a 20 mile each way daily commute until early November when I got another car, and it drives OK, obviously it's an old, well worn car with a lot of miles but I would always trust it to get me where I'm going. Tyres are matching Continentals all round, alloys have marks. It is on its original clutch so pedal is a bit high but it doesn't slip. Front crossmember replaced for 2012 MoT, weak point on these.

It's pretty tidy overall, there are stonechips, scratches etc as you'd expect, the worst being a small dent on the tailgate and a scrape by the fuel filler, but it's quite presentable. Photos make the bonnet look a different colour to the rest of the car but it isn't. CD player works when it feels like it

Good points - reliable, runs OK, recently re-gassed air-con (ideal for this time of year!), rear brake discs and calipers replaced within last year or so, as was part of the exhaust, centre box I think.

It's in Billericay, Essex, CM12

Mr Bump not included in the sale, sorry!

We like pictures (maybe not of Almeras though) so here you go:

Feel old, that's a brand new car for less than a ton.

Although I scrolled too quickly and thought it was a Flake special edition

Mugs pay over ten thousand pounds for brand new Japanese cars and heres one for less than one hundred pounds. What a great community this is and what great times we live in.

For what it's worth, my old 2-litre Mazda had a similar oil consumption/smoke problem (1L/250 miles or so, big cloud of blue smoke every cold start and oil droplets sprayed from the exhaust pipe when revving hard) and that was fine for emissions on the MOT. I just used to get it extremely warm (Italian tune up) and remove the air filter). Good luck with the sale.

Thanks, that does sound pretty much identical to mine in terms of symptoms and consumption.

I did wonder about thicker oil but worried about further engine damage by using the wrong grade - always used Castrol Magnatec 10/40 in it

Just for Pillock & Nyphur, it's probably how Nissan should have made it, covers the dent in the tailgate quite nicely too  :-)

Mine was fine for 3 MOTs despite the EML being on with code P0420, but your mileage may vary. I just bought 20L drums of 10W40 every six months, Mannol Defender is good and cheap.

It's called a "total flow-through oil refresh system" if it's leaking, and "compression based lubricant removal" if the rings are fucked.

Give it a proper name, sounds better.

Or Total Loss Oil system.

Used on Mazda wankle engines and B-52s (+other stuff).

I don't think they'd pass a MOT emissions test.

Quick update - took this for an MoT today and it passed, albeit with a list of advisories as long as Gary Glitter's charge sheet, unfortunately price adjusted upwards a bit to reflect that it's legal for another 12 months. I can't find the V5, not sure now whether I ever received it but it is registered in my name as I get all the road tax reminders etc,

Imagine the joy on the face of your nearest and dearest when this appears on the driveway on Christmas morning,

I think the sticky caliper is down to lack of use over the last few weeks as it was OK prior to that, maybe will ease off again with regular use

Had to chuckle at the 'suspect that engine is burning oil' advisory, there's no doubt about that! Very fair test overall though and these guys are very trustworthy so I would recommend them to anyone local to Southend - Sun Motors on Woodgrange Drive..

Lol? @ last advisory. That really should not be on there...

Infact it looks like the tester has treated it almost as a service fault sheet - which I believe is frowned upon by the ministry?

Most of those advisories look like manual input too, not preselected.

Can anyone give this a good home please, tidy reliable car with MoT until December 2017, shiter's price of £175

Please don't let me have to resort to Gumtree or eBay, can't see it being fun with a cheap motor like this

£125 anyone? Reluctant to bin a working and MoT'd car but it's just sitting unused as I have another car. Offside front caliper is sticking on where it's not been driven for a while

Posted

I'd just run it till it dropped. Either that or a very vague ad on Bumtree for £295, I'd keep mum about the faults though.

I'm almost tempted at that price for spares for my own almera

Lots of good bits on it, centre exhaust box, rear discs and calipers new about a year ago so have less than 10k on them, one front shock almost new, battery is less than two years old. I'd intended keeping it if it hadn't started burning oil so it did have a few quid spent on it.

The oval is looking likely at the moment!
