The sub £100 car is here.

2000 'W' reg Punto 1.2 manual

MOT April 2017

Taxed to get you home (if you're here in next few days)

109,000 miles

Looks pretty good to be fair.

Two recent brand new rear tyres

Why is it £99?

The offside driveshaft makes a weird knackety-knackety noise. Owner tells me (and I'm quoting): 'First AA man said it was the clutch. It stopped making the noise so carried on doing 60 mile round trip per day in it. Noise came back. Second AA man said "probably the gearbox". Noise stopped again, carried on. Noise came back, took it to a local garage who said "It's NOT the gearbox or the clutch, the end of the driveshaft is slightly worn, drive it carefully it should last a little bit longer"

I've driven it, the noise occurs if you accelerate but only lasts a second or two, but I do think there's a bit of a thrum from somewhere, so draw your own conclusions. Also the interior fan doesn't work on any setting, Doubtless, there's some Achille's heel thing with these that an owner's forum will reveal. Maybe it's the brushes, maybe it's just shagged.

£99 takes it away from Chester.

I wouldn't for a moment suggest you come and try and drive it home, and if it packs up on the way back call the AA or RAC.  I'd have thought it'd weigh in for about £35-£40, and you could bum it for the battery and cat (amongst other things) to total a decent enough amount.

That's a whole car for £99.

These versions always reminded me of early 2CVs. On those Citroen hadn't started fitting the third side window yet, while Fiat just randomly stopped fitting them to the Punto after '99. You can still see where the window's supposed to go, too. Like when windows on houses were bricked up for tax purposes in the olden days.

Where was I?

Oh yes. GLWS.

Yes, it was 83C.  Might be a bit of a trip for him, but I've pointed him this way...

Looks ideal for my needs!

Daft question, do you reckon a 6' 6"er could fit behind the wheel? For reference I can fit in a Corsa B.

A slightly thinner version of me drove one belonging to my uncle without too much of a problem back in the day.

It's the same fit, maybe slightly better, as a Corsa for me and I'm six foot three or four.

Sounds good. I need to work out when I can get to Chester, it may well be next Monday. I'm more than happy though to send you beer/rum/whisky/cider tokens electromatically to prove I'm serious.

Wasn't someone asking for a £100 car recently? Many said it couldn't be done.

Oh it sure can be done, I still haven't managed to sell the proton for £80 yet and in a week or two it's going to the crusher.

Input shaft bearing usually on them.
Common issue, £8 part. Shitloads of swearing to fit it.

If it's that it won't be getting done. Not worth the effort on a £99 car.

What Proton is this?

But you could have a £107 car that was perfect...

Eh? You don't want to spend £8 on a Â£99 car?

Input shaft bearing = gearbox off job surely?

It's not the parts cost, its the time and effort spent on fitting it.

We did me mates winter shitter Punto's input shaft bearing. Nowt to it, but I did forget to put the R Clip whatsit thingery back on the hydraulic line line to the clutch and the bastard popped off during the post-repair test drive. :-)

Gearbox strip, but thankfully they're not too bad to pull apart. Getting them out is the hard bit but in a Punto there's plenty of room.

In true Blue Peter mode....here's one I did earlier...

Being bluntly honest, that's a job that's beyond me at the moment. I've neither the time or inclination to start dropping gearboxes on £99 cars.

It's also by no means certain that it is the gearbox input bearing.

It looks like that box is light enough to be picked up by one person. I do like small engine cars. Every thing is so much more dinky and manageable by an individual.

Nope, but that's usual on those boxes, just thought I'd mention it as if it is it's a damn cheap fix for anyone who doesn't mind a day swapping it.

Ok, this hasn't ended well. I actually got off my arse and drove it home earlier. The first mile or so went reasonably well, after that somewhat less. I put it into first, did about 5 or 10 gentle yards and it decided not to be in that gear anymore. Oh well, gentle use of second gear, all's good for I don't know, half a mile maybe, then the clinkety clankety springity sproingy noises commenced. By the time I had it home it was making almost squealing/screeching sounds. Turned it off, left it two minutes, went to drive off and 1st stayed in gear, plus it was reasonably quite again for the next 25 yards, then started making horrible noises.

Anyway, it's no good to sell to 83C, so I'll probably just get a few bits off it then weigh it in. Shame really as a half tidy car, but not worth the time and money imho.

Will do. Currently trying to start a Poland Vs Ireland buying frenzy on social media.
