OMGUNIMOG SHITE.

everyone else at work hates driving it, so I took the helm and drove it an hour back to it’s warm home.

I’ve definitely driven worse!

I'd love to have a go in one

I did an off road session in one at Dalby Forest near Pickering back in 2000 . It was  a pretty knackered ex-East German army one but still very capable. I remember it had 16 forward and 16 reverse gears. We came down one slope so steep , you were hanging by the seat belts.

We got stopped by the military police for going too close to Fylingdales early warning complex.

What's so bad about them? I've never driven one, but imagine them as a bigger, heavier, clunkier Series Land Rover. Which are admittedly not pleasant to drive, but weirdly satisfying.

We're in the US of A, yehaar. And as per the stereotype their method of coal delivery is somewhat over the top. This is labelled as a 'D model cab over', a D model what?.

Not many hills around there I'm guessing.

Dunno really. The heaters were a bit shit so it was cool in the cab. Dash got warm though! 🤣 the bloke that fixed and road tested it at the dealer stopped me on my way out and said “it’s a bit scary over 50mph!”

no, it wasn’t.

these people have NEVER driven a 300tdi disco with lifted suspension, large mud tyres and NO anti roll bars over 50mph 🤣🤣

I found it pretty cool to drive tbh. Ok you have to be careful in traffic as you can’t see the winch or body that sticks out 41 meters from the cab……but that’s just part of the challenge!

I remember some of the older Unimog’s we had at SSE could be a bit, agricultural, is probably the best word!
Big mud tyres and quite often they had a crane etc mounted on them and the big winch. I wouldn’t say they were unpleasant to be in though.

Three Berliet GR/TRs, sorry, Ford Transcontinentals. Other vehicles being badged as Fords is not a new thing. Phun phact 504 of these were assembled by Foden.

The Tatra 815 has been built for 40 years, the last ones (badged as Terra) came off the production line this February (as chassis for fire engines). Here's some in the winter -

Transcontinental’s are actually significantly different to the Berliet. The only main shared component being the basic cab. Even that was strengthened and better equipped/trimmed over the original.

They were built in the UK in small numbers (by Foden!) and the Netherlands in much bigger numbers. The chassis was extremely strong and heavy where the Berliet using that cab was much lighter weight. The original intention was to make them big and hefty for upcoming legislation changes to truck weights which didn’t happen in the end. The result was that the Ford’s ended up being overweight compared to the competitors but they actually became very popular for long distance work and heavy haul because they were so over engineered.

This is an x Showerings lorry, it spent its life delivering popular alcoholic drinks, in particular Babycham. It had a 120 bhp Gardner engine, an Eaton two speed axle and a David Brown gearbox with an odd shift pattern (apparantly).  Note the top of the backboard is hinged and can be lowered for more economical driving when not needed. It was bought by RM Schofield and converted to this -

This was used for spreading chippings when dressing roads, the tipper body being filled with chips and a spreader fitted to the back when needed.

Nice Bussing in Portugal, after travelling from Switzerland. Bussing were taken over by MAN, who incorporated Bussing's Lion of Brunswick badge into their logo. Bussing used their own air cooled underfloor flat engines which MAN carried on with for several years due to customer loyalty to Bussing.

I often wondered what the lion logo was about on older MAN’s.

American pre-war trucks in Norway are something I find interesting as there are few vehicles that had such a long and hard working life as these.

Pictures below of a 1934 Reo that was new in the Knaben mines, after which it was sold a little further west and during the war years it was used in road construction.

The war years.

In 1949 when it was 15 years old it was to be sold and Norway was marked by 5 years of war and there was a shortage of many things including trucks so a change of ownership had to be applied for and an interested buyer was from 500km further north but the authorities refused as he did not have enough use for it. Where it ended up I do not know but it probably still had many years left in it as most of these had 20 to 30 years of working life here.

Sharer of the pictures are the son of the truck owner and is in the pictures as a child and has colored them as he remembers it and you can clearly see how tired the truck was after a hard 15-year working life.

Yesterdays visit to Uttoxeters fire station was greeted by this Thornycroft. It doesn’t run. Someone started stripping the top of the engine then left it in pieces. Shame. Lovely old thing though!

enjoy.

Not particularly old but quite a odd design, presumably a repurposed bin lorry chassis.
