AS Cheap Jag Club

Recommended Posts

A while ago it seemed that everyone had a Citroen XM on here, now it seems there's a lot of love for cheap Jags on AS at the moment - exactly how many have we got?

If you have one, leave a picture of it and some details about it, just for fun :-)

My membership is pending. I have put in an offer on a cheap Jag today on Ebay, but it's a bit of a cheeky offer, and nothing seems to have happened with it.

I do as well.

I know dome has a cheap Jag, he swapped a Freelander for it.

Italianjob has the Withnail and I spec one.

All the recent ones prompted me to search eBay and autotrader - nothjng remotely cheap (sub a grand) around here. I enjoy rolling up at my daughter's school in shite - a Jag would be great.

I had an expensive X350 once but looking to go real cheap this time as that was nothing but trouble.

Membership expired ! ?   She was relatively cheap when I bought it.  A year later it wasn't so ..and I was obliged to sell her.   :-(

As one observer on the JEC forum suggested "you bought the best you couldn't afford " astute firkg snob !

Here's mine...

...currently running like a dream.

It's changed my car use a bit, because it's relatively thirsty I try to use it only for longer journeys.

I've been meaning to say for a while, it is so smooth. When you lift off the throttle, the car slows so elegantly and almost imperceptibly.

Not like my old Porsche with its jerky drivetrain.

Do I get a membership number?

Yeah, stop rubbing it in Nyphur. I think the ex-Phil XJ40 is glorious!

(Mind you, so is that S-Type).

It seems to be a theme with everyone owning the same sort of cars. A small part of it will be people seeing them on here and looking for similar cars but most of it will be that particular type of car being plentiful and at the bottom of the depreciation curve IMO.

'Flirt ' in carmen red  is indeed a  '66 3.8 Man O/D S-Type

(..matching numbers but for the gearbox. She was built as an auto).

I am indeed a member at the moment.  Previously had a Series 3 XJ6 and an XJ40. Whilst the S-Type isn't quite in the same league it is still a lovely car.

I've had one Jaguar. It was an XJR in a few different colours of metallic beige.

I had a cheap Jag once.  So cheap it was a Daimler!  OK, I don't have it any longer but it's an experience I would repeat, definitely.

As long as I could still have the Cadillac at the same time...

Here's our contribution to the cause, a '98 XJ8 seen here in the works car park. Lovely thing to drive:

In the past I have owned two X300s both 4.0 Sovereigns. They were both great cars and so cheap to buy.

Is this for XJ40s and X300s only, I am not sure if our current ones count because they are Daimlers, not proper Daimlers just old Jags with different grills though. While S1 and S2 prices are rising these were amongst the cheapest available and I believe gained entry into our community by being the EX Breadvan and RobT cars?

I Iove cheap jags. I think I've had 10 but I've lost count. I always seem to end up paying £500 for them which is the sweet spot really, enough that you can pick a decent one from the dogs but cheap enough that they can be ditched if something big goes wrong ( actually, touch wood that's not happened yet in my cheap jag addiction) There's also something a bit rogue-ish about a cheap, preferably shabby old jag that's hard not to like; some cars only look " right" when they're pristine, but jags are comfortable in thier own skin even if its a bit battered.

Ken Jenkins - Calton Autos Ltd, Worksop were always good n fair when it came to parts and advice.. Run by an old boy, with years of real experience and a gent to deal with,  and his daughters - I'd recommend them.

The rogueish element of shabby Jags as encouraged by the media and movies, from Withnail to Daley and Joey Boswell to Shaun Of the Dead also in my experience makes the driver attractive to certain types of the opposite sex.

When I was 19 and driving £100 S1 and S2 XJs there was a character on the soap Brookside - a proper stereotyped Scouse Scally and of course he smoked ( literally) around in a shabby S2. More than one of my conquests drew a parallel between that character and my car- nothing to do with me- honest.
