Shitter Shopping... what's your source?

I think being of the Internet generation, I tend to gravitate around forums like this one, Gumtree and eBay, perhaps even Shcpock when I'm looking for a snotter to run about in.

My old man, has a different tact, and often scans the free adds, local rags and supermarket boards.

I've never really been one for auctions, but I know a few driveway dealers who buy em there and then move them on, and seem to do OK with it.

Where do you go a hunting?

Only here! I've browsed autotrader and ebay idly before and the price people want for proper shonky shit is laughable, compared to the real world price for genuine mowtahs on here!

Every time someone says they bought a car for £21 on ebay I go looking, and never find any locally to me.

The Rover 45 Dizzler I was watching is approaching £200 now.

Problem is, everyone uses ebay.

I got offered a 106 1.5 XUD last night, with a decent MOT but shonky paint and the usual pug laquer peel.  He tells me it'll make £200 all day long, and unfortunately he's right, someone will pay him £200 for it, because Internet.

Or because its got a decent chunk of MOT, and some people dont care about the cosmetic condition of their £200 winter hack?

ETA - 1.5 XUD?

Some people don't, but for £200 there's other stuff out there that people will take over it.  Something newer, shitter, tidier and with less miles, probably from Korea..

I've told him to get me some pictures of it and a decent description and I'll offer it on here, don't worry.

Diesel supermini with a long test for less than the price of a couple of tyres? What more do you want ?

Autotrader and gumtree. Don't do eBay, it's the domain of hopeless cases.

Unless you've an account with the Auction house it's rarely worth using the auctions, once you've paid fees etc...

Comfort?, pedals that aren't so close together you hang the brakes when you change gear?, something that won't get towed away as an abandoned vehicle from the works car park?

£200 is the saving grace, but for a tiny bit more money, you'd get a whole lot nicer a vehicle.

E30- Classified ad. On eBay

I use ebay, autotrader (online and mag), forums, I'll even keep an eye out for stuff with a for sale sign in the window while I'm out and about. I think I'd use anything really. So far I'm yet to go to a car auction, I've never been to one and never bought a car from one.

Stuff I've got now,

Mercury - ebay (USA)

Capri - spotted for sale at roadside locally.

Transit - autotrader

Granada - spotted for sale on roadside while I was out at work.

Merc 300SE - Ebay, called and went to see after seeing 2 relistings for it,

Z3. - A friend.

530d, - Gumtree, used by son for a year then passed to me when I bought him a Honda.

Here obv

Gumtree

Ebay

Neighbourhood stuff for sale

Freecycle a couple of times

Here, obviously.

Ebay.

Roadside spottings.

Local FB selling groups.

Of these, by some distance my favourite is AutoShite.

I actively avoid shitter shopping. That doesn't stop me acquiring shitters though, it just tends to be word-of-mouth.

As I was saying about roadside spotting...

Should do someone a favour at this price, with a load of MoT...

It's a 1.6 petrol manual that's done over 220,000 miles and has the tattered paintwork to show for it.  It's parked at the roadside in Barrow, these pics are from this very morning.  Audi lickers, stand by... and... GO!

I use this site (Alfa) and Gumtree mainly, I am a member of a load of local FB car selling pages but they are a nightmare to be honest populated by folk who are as thick as mince, I did get a bargainous Corsa for £100 off a dippy woman on FB, I put £15 in it 5 months ago when I bought it and its still got 1/4 of a tank, its so cheap to tax and insure I don't notice the payments leaving the bank and its a great backup car for dumping somewhere in town when out on the piss.

One thing I can guarantee is that when I don't need a car there'll be loads of good stuff on here, when I want/need to buy one there'll be nothing but a ropey old AX ;)

Prompted by this thread I thought I'd join my local Facebook group to see what it's all about. The first advert I read tells me everything I need to know!

My local Co-Op free adverts board is an odd mixture of massively overpriced stuff (there was a fifteen year old Rover 25 for £1595 or something not long back) and really vague, potentially bargaineriffic stuff (like "Car for sale. Kia. £250. Blue. Taxed") all written in typically giffer shaky handwriting. It seems like it would be a good source, if I had anywhere to put the spoils.

I was groomed on the Internet over a number of weeks by a certain fellow shiter with tempting pictures of fine conveyances from around the country.

I eventually gave in!

This was the second time I bought a car from eBay although the Vectra was a classified ad so doesn't count.

Posted

Polo - free ad

Sierra - dodgy used car lot

240 - neighbour about to scrap it

(first) Princess - spotted on a drive

Ledbury - gumtree

(second) Princess - owner's forum

BX - autoshite

Golf - spotted in a yard

(third) Princess - spotted in a scrapyard by a friend

Xantia - autoshite

Corsa - autoshite

414 - gumtree

Looks like for me it's gumtree, autoshite and spotting stuff lying around then asking cheekily if it's for sale.

A Quick tally of my driveway results in:

2 from facebook car group.

1 from forum friend.

2 from classified adds on fiat forum

1 from ebay tat (though facebook link)

3 from ebay - I do go look before bidding ends though usually.
