Mechanic - Stockport area? Update.

This is a long shot - a very long shot, but if I don't ask etc. etc.

I've been offered a Volvo V70 AWD in the Stockport area, the trouble is, I'm in Essex, and the Volvo has fuelling issues.

Would there be anyone up that way willing to fit a pump relay and fuel pump for me?

I know it's a crazy plan, but you never know....

I'd really like to get hold of the car, but travelling up with a bag of tools and parts is not very inviting.

If anyone can help with this, gissa shout on the pm, please.

Ta.

I'd be asking Junkman very nicely if him and Conrad are up to anything this weekend.

Are you finally getting a V70?

I've got a V70 2.5 20 valve at the mo, but the one I'm after is a 2.4 turbo AWD.

Rather fancy it.

I definitely have a relay and I think 2 fuel pumps, one of which definitely works. I'll have to check this evening that the pumps are still there but I had the relay in my hand last week.

Happy to send them Stockport way, I'll not be down that way again for a while (although there's a SLIM chance that I could be passing this Sunday) for all it takes to swap the pump and relay.

I say slim as I'll be driving up the M6 from London in my newly purchased S60 all being well, but I'd have to bring fuel pump, relay, hammer, chisel etc. to London in a bag on a train...

Is it drivable at all? Any idea of how hard the job is?

I think I know the car you're talking about, it's been on Auto Trader a fair while. It's red isn't it?

Nope, not that one.

I've had a word with the seller. He has a mate who is a mechanic, in fact it was this geezer that diagnosed the pump / pump relay.

The seller is going to ask his mate if he fancies fitting the parts, and he's going to get back to me.

Thanks for the offers of help and parts, but the seller has stopped any contact with me.

Maybe he's gone away for the weekend, maybe he's sold it, maybe he doesn't want to sell it.

I haven't got a clue, the last contact I had was he was going to ask his mate about fitting the parts.

Annoying and disappointing. I can't stand it when people won't respond, I've had a lot of it lately.

Wish I had enough dosh to buy the Lexus on here.

It is very frustrating when folks don't respond but maybe he has just gone away and can't get a signal or he could be in prison. Who knows. :)

Try again tomorrow, you might get lucky.

You may just get a response out of the blue then you will know exactly what is happening.

Thanks Ken, but I like Junkmans' solution more.

Mind you, I was very fortunate about the lad from Gumtree re: the AX, absolutely no hassle, good communication and he turned up when he said he would on the viewing day and on the collection day. Good enough for me.

Well, the seller Steve, got in touch tonight.

I had neglected to ask him the question I should have asked right at the start, manual or auto? It turns out it's a manual, which I really don't want, so I offered to post it around for him. It's an R reg Volvo V70 2.4 turbo AWD manual. MOT until December. Well, read the ad for yourself:

He wants £150. A bargain I think. Located Stockport.

I can contact Steve if you wish. I don't have a phone number yet.

Steve sounds like a very decent bloke.

Sorry to hear it's fallen through!

I have a couple of fuel pumps and a fuel pump relay for this, available cheap to a shiter to get it rescued!

Yeah, bit gutted when he told me it is a manual.

He said the clutch and gearbox are good.

When I bought my current V70R AWD I was overjoyed when I was told it was a manual!

Manual AWD boxes aren't that common, and I reckon one would sell for quite a lot more than the asking price for the car.

If the autobox in the V70 AWD is anything like in the XC90 my advice would be to run away. I have never had a problem with one myself, as I'm too scared to buy one, but I have only ever heard of them having problems. A colleague had a new box put in her 13 year old one, everyone else said to scrap it as there were no secondhand boxes available, she paid several thousand pounds for a new gearbox to be fitted instead.

XC90 T6 by any chance?

The Volvo Geartronic box  is pretty bulletproof if the ATF is changed.

The GM gearbox on the T6 engined ones is pish though.

The AWD is a weak point up to about 2005 when they changed to Haldex, but can be run without the prop with no ill effects.

Thanks andy 18s, I've sent a message about that T5.

A wee bit, if I was selling a very cheap car with faults and someone hundreds of miles away wanted me to get it fixed that seems like a lot of hassle, and then they turn around and say they don't want it because it's a manual.

I hope you find the right V70 for you, they're good cars.

I can see now why members are leaving this forum, when other members are having a pop for no good reason.

The sellers friend is a mechanic. He knows the car. I thought it was reasonable to ask a mechanic to fit the parts for payment. Seemed like a good idea to me, but obviously not. I did apologise profusely to Steve, the seller for not asking the manual/auto question right at the start. He understood immediately.

As much as I don't mind manual cars, I have to stick to autos because of Mrs Tet, she can't drive them, and every so often has to use my car. Absolutely no point having a car the missus can't use, and she has to get the bus or a cab.

I've got a V70 now LP, and it's a bloody good one, but I just want something with a turbo. Good reasonably priced one's are difficult to come by though, especially in auto form.

Does that satisfy you LP?

The old saying mate. If you haven't got anything constructive to say...................
