Car required to replace much abused Rover 600.

Daughter no.2 has finally managed to kill the ex-Fatha Angry 600.

It's probably just the alternator, hbut the fact it's got both ends dented and bumpers broken , plus near side headlamp smashed

I have neither the will or time to fix it .

So, we need a car - today!

She's a nanny so it needs to be big enough for 3 car seats and a double buggy in the boot. Ideally 1.6 -2.0 petrol saloon, hatch or estate. Long MOT , because I'm a lazy bastard .

Obviously a Rover of some sort would appeal to me, she's not fussed.

Budget is up to £400, but sub-200 would be better.

The obvious answer is a silver Renault Laguna.

I hadn't realised that was still available, although the length of MOT is the same as the Rover,and.......

I'm sure I can think of other excuses.

You have made me search For Sale posts properly though, now trying to convince stroppy ungrateful offspring that a Carlton or Frontera is what every trendy young woman should be seen in.

Sensible hat on;

This is only 40 mins away and looks OK to me, but then I know nothing about French shit.

Would an AX do, if you strapped the double pram to the roof like?

There seems to be a 405 scene tax . The few that are advertised are all at least twice the price of similar condition 306 or 406es.

Another 600 is a possibility, I suppose, and that one would be amusing when v-tec kicks in yo!

Difficult to get past the fact the one we've got only cost £100 though, over 2 years ago. That's about there value in my head now.

John K hasn't got back to me but I've got an 03 406HDi saloon still sitting but the test is only September on it.

Hold The Front Page!!!!

Just seen an advert, such as dreams are made on.

It's in the Post Office window of the poshest village around here, let's put it like this The Dower House opposite has a real Dowager Duchess living in it and her late husband was a shiter, he bought the first wedge Lagonda and had to push it home.

Anyway, the advert

Car For Sale, BMW 520 automatic gear change , 1993, Mot March 2017. £300 or offers.

It was put in this afternoon, I called the landline ( natch) number to be met with what sounded like an elderly posh lady, saying she's not in.

I put on my best telephone voice and left my landline number, so she doesn't think I'm a pikey . Now waiting

I have visions of an immaculate low mileage e34 sitting in the garage where her late husband lovingly parked it after its annual trip to the main dealer for MOT and service.

Let's see! Will keep you posted.

should said 5 series not meet with your daughters approval I(as a certified auld bmw licker) would be interested - ta muchly!

Sorry but that Rover is worth £350 all day - only issue is that certain parts are getting hard to get hold of.

ok search over.

BMW 520i bought and collected, just added it to MIB and taxed it.

It wasn't quite as I'd hoped, but not bad.

It's a red 520i Auto non SE with plastic wheel trims. It does have a 3 spoke M steering wheel and an electric roof though.

Giffer owned, it was his company car as a manager for Barclays Bank, he bought it when he retired 19 years ago and it kept his XJ-S company in the garage.

It's done 185,000 miles with BMW stamps in the book up to 2009, since then an annual service and MOT at the village garage.

Drives perfectly, slow but oh so smooth, and the ride on the big squashy profile Continentals made me think all the roads I'd just driven on in my Merc had been resurfaced.

Bodywork seems solid with the only problem been missing lacquer on the bonnet, apparently it was damaged in a hailstorm and repaired at the local BMW dealer about 12 years ago.

He gave us HBOL still in the cellophane and a file with every receipt and MOT from new.also every tax disc.

I felt guilty offering £250 , but he was quite happy and said he was just glad someone was going to get some more use from it.

Reason for sale? His wife has just bought him an MX5 for his 80th !

Told him to keep my number for when he wants to sell the XJ-S , a red V12 about 87/8 I think, it was on a short plate.

This is just where we park the cars that don't fit on the drive or in our street.

Just been informed a swap has occurred and eldest is now the owner of the 520 and second oldest( the Rover killer) is having the C Class.

I'm so proud I've created a family of shiters.

That's all very well, but's what happening to the Rover?

Up for grabs, bit of MOT,nhad a complete exhaust and cat last year and a rear calliper to match the one FathaAngry put on a couple of years ago.

Must be about 200,000 but engine's great, battery is shot but will go with a jump, amazingly she's never been pulled by the Old Bill even though it looks like it's just been in a motorway pile up.

That looks lovely, and getting it for £250 was a bargain.

Hopefully it should provide reliable motoring for a good few years. It is also strangely nice to see a pov spec BMW with trims as opposed to constantly seeing M-Sport 116d's all the time.

Judging from the condition of the Rover it's nice to see the E34 getting a repreive, it deserves it. Don't see them on those placca trims often, shame as they look great. Better than the same boring lattice things they often have.

Posted

that e34 looks spot on:) best of luck with it!

it should have a 24v m50 engine in it with single vanos too (i think!)-if you think its slow, the preceding m20 12v was 20bhp down..

top tip - old bmws like nothing better than a good thrash to get everything warmed up, don't be shy;)

Golden age of BMWs that is. Real quality cars. Excellent buy at £250. You'd get three times that all day if you sell it on. Having sold cars privately myself recently, they were probably just glad you were normal, didn't turn up like Quentin Wilson giving a running commentary to the corner of the room or bringing the entire family going 'best price best price... I give you £14!'

Good buy at £250 but arguably the pishest wheel trims ever. The look like b&m specials with motorworld bmw stickers on them.

520 auto - she'll have to start each journey half hour earlier.

Surely somebody on here could take on the rover? One of the most underrated cars of all time.

How very dare you!!

I'll have you know these trims are based on the aero discs fitted to early e34 M5's.post-17414-0-90716300-1466701451_thumb.jpeg

In fact I may fit white walls, then from a distance , in the dark, to Stevie Wonder, it'd look like an M5.

Anyone willing to stump up £50 cash monies could drive it away- the pictures do flatter it though and it has many foibles. I could deliver it to Shitefest as I'm only 10 miles away, although not planning on attending as I'm a social inadequate. This would give me an excuse.

The 600 was rover's best kept secret. Not as nice or refined as a 75, but much more durable.

I loved my s plate 618. Great motor.

I like the looks and interior but find the gearing ridiculously low, in 5th at 70/80 it's streaming it's nuts off, considering it was meant as a company rep motorway cruiser. A high spec 2.0 Cavalier or Sierra/Mondeo would be revving less at a 100.
