I used to be in Kilmarnock and Loudon car club, mainly autotests and road rallies. I may* have my RAC MSA licence lined up to renew for the first time in nearly 20 years.

P.S. thanks to GMs efforts on Saturday I'm currently looking at mx5s. Cougar goes tomorrow.

P.P.S. To fund this I may sell a bicycle. Anyone fancy a cheap Lapierre Aircode?

if you need any further convincing, nip round and have a go on mine - an afternoon pissing about on the back roads will have you convinced (just ask john :))

Brian, pick a dry day and go along in the locost and compare. The Mazda has a heater!

It's funny, I rescued a P reg UK Mk1 MX5 a few years ago. I bought it cheap with a seized alternator, fixed the alternator on the chaps driveway and drove off into the sunset.

The car ended up a bit lower on Bilstein shocks and whilst fun I never really bonded with it for road driving-the benchmark for me was set by the early Porsche 944 I'd had which I absolutely adored-no PAS, torquey engine and just enough grip but no more. The Mazda felt clinical and dare I say boring to me after that so was sold fairly soon (at a profit right enough :) )

Saturday reminded me why I love RWD though. As good as the Puma felt the ability of GM to play with the Mazda on the throttle and the balance of the little thing showed through.

Also being small one would fit in the garage to work on. I want to learn to weld which is handy as they're all rusty. Plus fixing up a cheap one gives more opportunity for not losing money if we decide to sell it on. A cheap 172 leaves limited room for profit

For me it's about finding my track feet in something solid(ish) with a view to getting the Locost on the track at some point.

Mine was rubbish, I took it out a few times but when I went back to mazdas, I had a lot more fun

Last time I mulled the prospect over in here, a cheap Proton Satria Sprint hoved into view at a used car lot in Airdrie. I know, I know, wrong wheel drive, but...as a cheap disposable weekend warrior, not a bad choice.

I really want to live closer to Knockhill, and have a driveway.

That would allow me to buy some cheap rammel and thrash it around. :D

Just goes to show, what makes a good road car doesn't necessarily make a good track car!

I had 2 early 944s (non PAS, square dash) and an S2. The S2 was a much more accomplished car and a nicer place to be, the square dash cars were much more involving (and fun) though.

Hmm! The LS400 was a very accomplished road car, but on the track it was hilarious though far from competent.

the S2 was a great car for a long journey but just felt too heavy for the track. I'd like to try an early one (or a 924) some day to see what I was missing. if I ever do buy another porker, it will be a 928 - ruinously expensive I suspect but a childhood dream that needs fulfilled :)

I visited from Accrington!  The Puma is slowly becoming Triggers Broom with all the slightly new bits on it. Although as of Thursday next week the Puma will be my only car, so probable a good idea.

Guy who wins the autotests by us has a proton satria. Ace piece of kit.

I gave the mazda a check over this afternoon, it seems to have taken all of the weekends abuse in its stride - plenty of life left in the brake pads, tyres wearing evenly (and not too quickly) and no damage underneath from the off roading. plenty of genuine knockhill mud in the arches to clean out though :)

the fluid leak that we were told about by the driver of a car behind us was the power steering fluid boiling over - I'd slightly overfilled it a while back, it's now sitting nicely on the middle of the dipstick.

this is the front passenger side tyre, the one that sees the greatest wear at knockhill - nothing to worry about here - I swapped front to back anyway just to keep things even

GM, I checked and they do an iOS version of the app.

I'll need to get a newer phone - it's not compatible with my iphone 4 :(

Glad my inability didn't have any lasting effect :)

Makes the free app quite expensive though.

I just looked back at my data from a couple of years back and I did a 1:07:50 in the red mazda - my quickest ever lap !

Wow, I'm over 4 seconds behind you!

What's the thought on Mk3 MR2s? They seem to be an interesting alternative to an MX5 and less susceptible to rust.

Ah I wish I was still up in those parts sometimes, loved taking my x1/9 to Knockhill and getting swallowed whole by Porsches etc up that hill from the hairpin.

It was definitely more suited to Forrestburn- can't recommend that club enough! Here's a clip of me in my Exxy there..

Actually the next time I'm in Scotland I should try the MX5 at Knockhill mebbe.

Used to road rally in 903cc MK1 Panda. Highly nodded with a homemade map light.

Have to wonder how the Activa would do at an afternoon like this...

Get a set of track tyres and let's find out! Would love to see an Activa on track.

No need to wonder .... if a starlet can do it, you can too!
