Shitefest Dream Accommodation FOR SALE

Does the idea of sleeping in a car in a field seem a bit too depressing? Are hotels just not chintzy and miserable enough? Then step this way sir, for I have the solution for just £250!

Yes, I'm flogging the caravan as I flog pretty much everything with wheels (bar the 2CV, and even then I've actually flogged its wheels on the Dyane).

It's a 1981 Abbey GT212, so dead sporty. Even has Rostyle wheels, delicious upholstery, double glazing and a baize-lined cocktail cabinet.

There is a gas heater. This works very well, though you trust your own life with it. I recommend a carbon monoxide alarm. We used one and it didn't go off. Hoorah! There is a twin-hob cooker, with oven. Not tried the oven, nor the three-way fridge. They are there though. Yes, an oven! It has electric hook up - we've not tried this.

There is a bathroom, with a sink, but the ceiling has caved in here and there's a bit of frame rot in this corner. We dealt with this by closing the door and pretending not to notice.

The bed (it's two-berth) is very comfortable. You can have two singles or a crossways double should you manage to attract an actual lady.

There is an awning. We've never taken it out of the bag. Tows well, brakes appear to have some effect and there's a jockey wheel with a handle on it to drive the wheel, so you can move the caravan around. Ace.

Pics!

Deary me. Clearly this is about as desirable as a holiday in Rhyl! I may have to brave certain classified sites...

Posted

Strangely enough, Rhyl is probably the one place it would sell quickly.

Looks like a bargain to me, the only things putting me off is the fact I can't tow on my licence, the only towbar I have is for an MX5 I no longer own, and that it's in Wales.

Oh, I think it's great, but were I to turn up at home with it I'd be brown bread within minutes.

Perhaps you need to think laterally Mr. Wobbler. We see a caravan but if you tow it to Islington it's a highly desirable retro chic studio apartment in a prime location. Advertise for offers over £195k...

As mentioned on Twitter, there's no way you'll keep hold of it long enough for me to get a towbar on the Princess so I'm out.

Posted

Would love that but too far for me to drive unfortunately.

Saying that where exactly are you?

Looks nice, good price too. Should sell quick at that price, awnings are dear as well, so are the mover things.

Near Aberystwyth. What's known as a fair old trek! I could probably drag it to border country if it helps.

Would it be wrong to drag the XM all the way back to Wales to take it + caravan back North?!

That's not true, unless the gross train weight is >3500kg.

Depends on when you passed your test. If after Jan '97, you can't tow much other than a tiny Erde.

Not at all! Though perhaps I shouldn't have removed the number plate from the caravan... Then you can store the rear door you need in the caravan on your way home. Sorted!

That number plate remains in the rear footwell I think!

Lots of people think that but you can tow within a 3500kg gross train weight with a post-97 license. The 'small trailer rule' is a fallacy.

If you passed your test after 1st January 1997, it gets a bit more complicated. Licences issued after this date only include category B, which means you can:

  • Drive a vehicle with a MAM up to 3,500kg
  • Tow a trailer weighing more than 750kg if the combined MAM of the trailer and car is less than 3,500kg
  • Or tow a trailer up to 750 kg

I second the towing laws. I did so much info searching to be sure. Nice van by the way. Good luck with sale

Posted

Originally, there was a rule that the trailer gross weight had to be less than the towing vehicle's kerb weight, but that was binned at some point.

Stupidly, as I'm a 'class 2' driver, I can drive a 26 tonner with a two ton Moffett forklift hanging off the back that I can't even see in the mirrors, but can't pull a caravan with a 4x4.

I would love this but:

1.  I don't have £250.

b.  I have nowhere to store it.

iii. My only tow car (Saab) is poorly.

4. Wales.

Posted

The law is bloody confusing!

When they say maximum authorised mass I think they mean the gross weight of the car and the gross weight of the trailer combined, which just adds confusion.

Posted

Our transport laws are a complete mess. Working on the community buses has taught me this. Lots of different rules depending on weights, and often different weighs have different rules! So, if you don't have D1, you can drive a minibus as long as it isn't hire and reward, and doesn't weight more than 3.5 tons. Unless a lift is fitted. Then it's 4.25 tons.

The best bit is about seatbelts. If the unladen bus weight is below 2540kg (why the f*ck did they pluck that figure out of the air?!) then the driver is responsible for ensuring seatbelts are worn. Above that, the driver is not responsible (because obviously, it gets hard to monitor as the number of seats goes up).

I wish we could replace all of this nonsense with 'don't be a twat.' Sorted.

Wonder if the MX5 bar would fit the Kia Pride..

I think cocktail cabinets are a caravan thi g. Mine is a 1991 and thats got one too. What actually happened in the bathroom?

Posted

Just noticed it has hot and cold water and a showerhead. That must have been a top van when new

No - you can collect your door on the way back!

:D

It was a darned fine van when new. Proper posh. There's a hot water tank underneath the bed. No idea how that side of things work.

But water has rotted the frame and ceiling in the bathroom - too much shower use? Shame as it's a really nice van otherwise.

Brilliant! I can just picture peering in the rear view mirror at 50mph down the M6 to see the tyre blowing and the rapidly gyrating rubber bands decimating the entire side of it into a cascade of splintering fibre glass and beige cushion innards.
