eddyramrod Posted July 20, 2020 Author Posted July 20, 2020 Quite soon there's going to be a lot of primer on this car. It's going to run beyond the 1980s Chicago look I was aiming for. Now it's pretty well established that I can't get Laredo Tan over here, and even if I could Over There, I don't think I want to be responsible for shipping a load of aerosols. So what to do? Well I've used Ford Tibetan Gold on the peak of the bonnet, and on the trim rails inside, so that might be an answer. I'm actually no fan of brown cars, but Huggy needs to be brown, it suits him so well. So do I leave him with patches, or do I buy a load of rattle cans and paint the whole car? Decisions, decisions...
jonathan_dyane Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Top work going on here Eddy. Can’t you get Laredo Tan mixed?
eddyramrod Posted July 20, 2020 Author Posted July 20, 2020 Thank you :) Possibly; I've saved a colour chip. Haven't done any significant investigation yet though.
Jikovron Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Slight mismatch isnt the end of the world, as you say it's just wanting to present a working level of presentation, but if looking to go over the whole car I wonder if a set of gloss mini rollers and a suitable 10L can of some sort of brown would be as cost effective as it gets, as a related aside I followed a vw t4 van through a drive thru that had been roller painted, not a bad job all told!

mitsisigma01 Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Or we could do it the Autoshite way I've got a tin of gloss yellow ?? chodweaver, chaseracer and eddyramrod 2 1
PhilA Posted July 20, 2020 Posted July 20, 2020 Nah, don't even bother. Back in the day it would have gotten red lead primer and.. well that is nearly brown. So it's good enough. Nobody'll notice when it's dirty. Gotta get into the correct Chicago mindset if that's what you're going for. Needs a thick layer of city grime. eddyramrod 1
eddyramrod Posted July 20, 2020 Author Posted July 20, 2020 Oh it's definitely got that! @mitsisigma01 THANK YOU! That's brilliant.

PPG 2183 DuPont 5125 Sherwin-Williams 3253 Main problem is it contains a lot of hues, so it'll have faded in funny ways. However, those codes will mix Laredo Tan/Desert Sand/Desert Gold/Palomino Copper/Copper Mist (GM paint code 63). Phil eddyramrod 1

Sorry - the pic was taken a few months back, and the car's no longer parked there! Though how he sold it with the phone number and price illegible is beyond me... The Caprice (painted up as a police car, and interestingly RHD) was at an architectural salvage place a few months ago, along with a Scamp kit car and the shell of a Ford Pop... for all I know, they're still there...
Talbot Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Just remember. The colour brown doesn't actually exist: eddyramrod 1
eddyramrod Posted July 21, 2020 Author Posted July 21, 2020 I've got sunburn on the top of my head today from hour after hour of filling and sanding. I'm getting there! egg, danthecapriman, blackboilersuit and 4 others 7
eddyramrod Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 We're having showers today, so work unlikely. I have had a look in the trunk though, and it seems to be pretty much watertight now, which is something I wanted. danthecapriman, Coprolalia, puddlethumper and 7 others 10
eddyramrod Posted July 24, 2020 Author Posted July 24, 2020 Yesterday and today have consisted of more filling and sanding. And then more filling and sanding. And then some more. Still a bit to do before I get a shape I can be happy with, but I think I've cured the leaks into the trunk now. PhilA, loserone, danthecapriman and 10 others 13

eddyramrod Posted July 26, 2020 Author Posted July 26, 2020 Warning, photo heavy! So, we left it where I'd made and fitted plates for the holes... There followed a n Imperial fuckton of filling and sanding, filling and sanding, rinse with rainwater and repeat. (Metric is no good when your engine measures 472 cubic inches...) And now it looks like this... This afternoon I'll be giving it a wash, and then with luck, tomorrow will be a suitable day to slap some primer on! CreepingJesus, JeeExEll, Coprolalia and 19 others 22
danthecapriman Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 Miles better Eddy. I fucking hate rubbing filler down. It’s a bloody horrible job to do, especially if you’ve got no patience like me! It makes a right mess too, lots of dust and then it congeals into that off white coloured paste when you wet sand it. You done the brakes yet? Or are you finishing the body first? eddyramrod 1
treehugger Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 You may have saved it from the oval for a few years! eddyramrod 1

It's booked in for Tuesday morning for the brakes. I've washed it today and left the fender skirts off so the garage can get the back wheels off easily; tomorrow, all being well, I'll slap down some red primer. Christine Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 So,..,tonight white bogies .... tomorrow red bogies ..? danthecapriman, DSdriver and eddyramrod 1 2
eddyramrod Posted July 27, 2020 Author Posted July 27, 2020 No red bogies today, it's been raining too hard. Unlikely tomorrow too, as it's going in to be fiddled with. Oh well, at least the rain has shown up a leak in the channel around the trunk opening. I'll see to that when it comes back here, then all being well, should be watertight. Jim Bell and danthecapriman 2
eddyramrod Posted July 28, 2020 Author Posted July 28, 2020 It's round the corner now at the garage. Fingers crossed it won't be too dear. LightBulbFun, Amishtat, CreepingJesus and 1 other 4
danthecapriman Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 Once you get it back, treat yourself to a nice long drive out in the country somewhere. Remind yourself of why we have these pain in the arse things! eddyramrod, Saabnut, TrabbieRonnie and 1 other 4

I can confirm this Caddy would have been right at home trawling the seedier areas of the Windy City back in the 1980's. It has just the right amount of salt-ravaged bodywork, homemade sheet metal repairs and weather-beaten vinyl roofage to pass as daily transport for any resident of the Cabrini-Green housing projects or the Robert Taylor homes, circa 1987. You're only a couple of bullet holes away from complete authenticity! Keep up the good work! mk2_craig, CreepingJesus, eddyramrod and 3 others 6
eddyramrod Posted July 28, 2020 Author Posted July 28, 2020 Really, as a finishing touch, I should have one of the tyres turned round on the rim so it shows the black side, and lose one of the hubcaps. Then it will look the part! meshking, CreepingJesus, danthecapriman and 1 other 3 1

eddyramrod Posted July 29, 2020 Author Posted July 29, 2020 OK, today I got Huggy back from the garage. They haven't put the new wheel cylinders on; they managed to free off the nipples that are already there. The bill still came to just over £150, and remember I bought the new cylinders independently! So I went for a celebratory drive. Everybody else seemed to have the same idea, unfortunately, and not one of them wanted to go over 40 even where it was legal. Worse: they were all driving diesels, and I couldn't stay far enough back that I wouldn't be constantly inhaling their exhaust. How lovely.* So I stopped to take a photo... If anyone knows the Barrow area, have a guess where I was! You might win a random diecast! So, I got home and set about primering the work I've done. This is what it looks like now... I was a bit close to my wall to shoot the front wing but you get the idea. It now looks like the trunk does. Oh boy it was nice to drive Huggy again on the (sort-of) open road. I've got more work to do but I'm going to have a little break. Dan_ZTT, CreepingJesus, outlaw118 and 32 others 35
