All Vauxhalls R Shit - They really are... Game over.

Having been busy the last few days i managed to find a few hours this morning to take a look at this.

To be honest it's pretty good as these so, i gave the engine bay a bath in Jizer before getting all excitable with the jet washer, much more presentable!

After that i gave the out side a good wash and got that GB sticker of the back, the arches are amazingly solid behind them

I wouldn't mind removing the tow bar but that looks a faff to do so I'll probably leave it for now. I'll make a start polishing it next.

After that i gave the interior a good clean, it's not perfect but it's much better, most annoyingly was the radio though, being a tight wad i tried to download a free decoding program only to download a bloody virus onto my PC which now won't even load up so I've had to take it to a repairer at a quote of £35 and i still had to pay £8.99 to get the radio code! On the plus side it does work so that's something i guess!.

Trig, IF you should feel the need for some 14 inch alloys of a Vauxhall fitment, like the ones on the mk2 cavalier LXi, and you come this far North, they are yours free. Perfect if you decide to interchange the front brakes for larger mk3 Gsi one's which will just about fit under a 14 inch alloy.

My old man had one exact same spec but 1.4. Quite nippy he said it was. Quite popular with the joyriders as well at the time as he festooned it with anti theft devices...

Posted

Did they use those trims on cars that late? I remember seeing them on 80's models.

Posted

They're the same trims as the GL model had at launch in '84.

Yeah, I remember late Mk2s with them everywhere.

I'd imagine they are original, everything about the car is completely standard and unmessed with other than the tow bar and that front number plate which I'm going to get DMB to make me a new one for.

I've spent most of this evening cleaning the outside of this, it's come up amazingly well, it's now got a mirror finish and looks so much better, the only dent on the bodywork is the one on the bonnet and even the scabs on the sill ends is only superficial. I'll try and get some proper photos of it tomorrow but for now you'll have to make do with this quick one i took 20 minutes ago.

You weren't joking about the mirror finish, that is superb.

Pretty soon, with the wheel arches sorted out, it will look like it came straight out of the factory; so nicely done, especially considering you have had it for less than a week.

Looking spiffing already. If it was in my care, I would add some self adhesive silver trim tape in the bumpers and side rubbing strips a'la Ford style

I loved this update. Mk3 cavalier seats and different steering wheels. Takes me back.

They were ace really,as said before,my 1.8 glsi was relaxed and low revving at 80-90,but really fast through the gears! In a rubbery gearchange way

My mum had an sri version of this as a company car back in 1993. I can't remember if it was a 1.8 or 2.0 but after a mini and 2cv it felt cosworth quick. It was red and looked the business. I was insured on it at age 22. She used to let me borrow it and after tootling off down the road i would rag it senseless including donuts in the car park.

You'll love this update then!, I've managed to finish cleaning it now and have got it insured too, I'm just about to tax it also then I'm taking it to work tomorrow. A new ignition module arrived today so i fitted that, I hope this stops the cutting out issue that it supposedly has.

I think it looks quite smart now for a 25 year old Vauxhall.

That looks bloody lovely Trig, nice one. Should give you less grief than the Audi hopefully!

I'm hoping so! I've got a car meet tomorrow evening so I'm making it's debut there, i just need to shift this Audi now!

Good stuff. I cleaned the Sunny up as best I could last night in the limited time I had available (I think your efforts will put mine to shame!).

That looks great, polished up very well indeed. Love it, prefer it to the Audi but i'm odd

I drove it into work this morning and it just feels completely different to the Audi, the Audi is a heavy, well built solid car with a crisp almost Mk4 Golf feeling gearbox and a silky smooth engine.

The Astra is none of those things but it does feel like more fun and by christ does it fly! I mean really fly! It did cut out twice when changing gear and at the traffic lights but seemed ok after a quick thrash, I'm not sure if it's related to the lack of use or if something is faulty yet.

Whatever it is it won't be much will it. Bet bits are mega cheap for these as well.

It's a cracker that alright.

I've spent the last couple of days doing the both of the rear sills and little jobs, It's looking like a minter now. The only downside is that it's running like a proper bag of poo now, not pulling when your acceleration, spluttering and revving really highly, I think the carb is gummed up with the old fuel that's in it.

I've tried cleaning what i can but it's made no difference I've bought a Pierburg 2E repair kit and will get my dad to help me strip it down on Saturday. I've also fitted the new front number plate from DMB, It's made a huge difference in my opinion.

What you need now is a caravan, and Mr wobblerofdollys of this parish has one for sale at a very good price

Posted

Well bought! Looks great.

I will lay odds that the next three owners will be shiters.

Posted

Looking good. Hopefully that carb repair kit will do the job, it felt very much like my 1200 did before the garage got it running nicely.

Fancy working similar bodywork magic on my Sunny?......

Posted

I can have a look at it for Nigel, no problems at all. I'm looking forwards to getting this running better and actually using it at last, when it was behaving for a short while the drive back from Shotley was quite entertaining on the bends!

Posted

Bloody hell, that looks amazing. You did a great job on those sills.

Hopefully getting it running right won't be too much hassle, but good luck anyway.
