1994 Peugeot 605 SRdt - LARD ON THE SPREADSHEET

I realised I never did a proper thread on my second 605.

I didn't necessarily want a diesel; I just wanted an S1 605 before they all disappeared.

Unsurprisingly it's incredible on fuel compared to the shitbag 18mpg horror of the S2's PRV:

2.1 XUD if you will - with yellow bulbs. Like every second-hand Peugeot I buy, it's missing the under tray.

I've found one for the V6; finding one for the diesel might take longer.

Most of you probably know that I bought the burgundy V6 off Partridge. At the moment, it's

making horrific drive line noises which stumped FPB7 and chaseracer when we took it to

the Malverns one weekend to look at a GSA. The RAC struggled, too.

Not wishing to tear the gearbox to pieces, it's parked up until I have the funds and the

time to take it to someone with a ramp. It still mafts of tip, by the way.

So. This 605 was one after a bidding war on eBay. I greased up my sniper to win it and it

came through with 2p to spare. I upped the final amount a couple of times in between

losing signal coming back from Retromobile in Paris.

The last trip the poorly V6 took out was to collect its brethren. Captain Slow drove.

It was a second car for an elderly bloke in Barnsley who didn't want his other motor -

a Mercedes of some kind - to get too wrecked by the bad weather.

His grandchildren had used it as a bin; he'd used it as a mobile workshop.

Surprise and delight didn't cover it:

I had the soup for my tea a couple of days later. Finding tinned goods was unexpected.

As was this tenon saw. Also included: mugs, swim nappies and bailing twine.

The kind would call it scruffy. It has dents and scuffs all over the place, but it drives well.

Mechanically, it's in better condition than the V6. The diesel's smaller 65 profile tyres

cope very well with the local roads.

Seeing in the daylight revealed a massively illegal tyre. Captain Slow took them to be changed.

I have some nice Nokians on the way - these are just interim.

Know how I said it was mechanically fit? Here's a log book recording the MPG and fuel used up to 2003.

Another peculiarity is the number of pens stuffed under the seats. I'm sure there are more I haven't found.

Also, this thing mings - and this is after I had an initial go at cleaning it.

Weirdly, like the V6, a push pin for the door's missing. The NSR door is also stuck; I reckon I'll have to

cut through the door card to release it. There's a breaker on eBay which I'm hoping will yield a few

decent spares.

As the interior and boot ming consummately, I didn't feel too guilty humping a set of free wheels and tyres

I got for the 306 wagon and Tamworthbay's Dolomite steels I snagged on the way back from a work trip.

My JDM y0 grille for the Piazza arrived, too; after being gripped by a comical amount by Parcel Farce,

it's now in my possession.

Yeah, laters.

Cor, I'd love to get my cleaning gear all over that.  In all seriousness I would.  I imagine the end result would be molto satisfying.

I really like 605s. I'd like a diesel one day but it's unlikely. Yours are about the only two I've ever seen.

You should have seen it before I pulled all the toys / sweets / congealed mystery out of it.

Lol, I know you'd got this car but I think it's the first time I've seen this.

EDIT* Actually, I'm pretty sure I saw this on eBay a couple of months ago...

Well bought chap, it's a handsome early car and oddly enough reminds me of my 820E.

I should, but using my imagination I'm quite glad I didn't.  I'm rather partial to the wheel trims it sports too.  One of the best looking Peugeots out there really.

It is a damn handsome thing. The S2 facelift farted the looks up somewhat; that extra Peugeot badge on the slam panel was superflous and I'm glad the one on mine fell off.

This is class!! A fine pen collection also

They are a lovely handsome chunk of car and loads to the gallon, it winning all the way.

Mugs, swim nappies and bailing twine in my 605 sounds like the buffalx'd lyrics of an Indian pop song.

The other 605 had a Kinder bar in it but I ate before selling it. Not even sorry.

What a fine looking car, that first picture makes it looks almost coupe-ish. Go well?

That's a fine looking thing . Are the trims the one that came with the car do you recon?

Posted

Defo the standard ones, aye.

New, it had 107bhp to move 1450kg. Speed is not one of its virtues, although it cruises nicely.

There's something still proper old-school French about these. They made some fantastic large cars back in the 1989s and 1990s and these looks super sharp. Hard to believe it's the same underneath as an XM, sans spherage. Do you still have your 1/18 Solido example? I still have mine, it stank of fags for years after I bought it but it was boxed, one of my favourite model.

Posted

It looks like it has a Bosch pump for optimum pump tweakery.

Looks great, I haven't seen a 605 in years apart from one abandoned by a garage in Lochcarron.

Posted

Bit of a cliché on here, but this sort of era must have been the last golden years of Peugeot stuff. If you're ever up this way I'd love a spin (passenger seat) in it, Jon.

I flogged it for an obscene sum to a German Peugeot enthusiast about five years ago. It was one of the crudest 1/18 models I've ever seen.

Sod that - you can drive it.

Lovely stuff! here's the finest Top Gear presenter of all time Chris Goffey giving one a thorough shake down back in 1989

Cool, will swap keys with my 405TD estate with you and do a side-by-side comparison!

Seriously, if there was a car show which was literally just simple "here is a car reviews" like that clip above, I'd be hooked.

I would honestly not get bored ever. Even if they did bland eurodieselboxes.

I have a camera and I've presented stuff before.

I'm sorry in advance.

A four-door booted saloon, surely, Chris? Unless you're talking about my 605, in which one of the doors doesn't open. Terrifyingly specific

for a car that wouldn't be built for another five years.

Peugeot Volvo Renault unit? Didn't realise my TV hard disc recorder was once an engine. Perhaps that's why it's shit at recording BBC channels.

If we don't shoot a twin test outside the CAVCRAFT garages, I'm never speaking to you again.

I cannot imagine Clarkson discussing additional butterfly valves for the fuel injection system!

Shall I bring a 205D to the party?

We really should invite a 306 and 106 over (looking at Joe here) and do the full hit.
