Lock up find

Been offered a lock up through the council for £1.27 a week. The old guy that had it has passed away and his family want shut of it and don't want to continue renting it. Anyway, it's from about the 1950s made from concrete with a asbestos fibre cement roof. Thinking of taking it on, but concerned that if wanted rid of it, what would the likelihood of me being able to pass it on. Is there likely to be demand for garage space? Inside contains an old Beetle convertible of indeterminate age. Id doubt they'd throw that in somehow despite it looking like it hasn't turned a wheel for at least 30 years. Only pics of outside as of yet, need to speak to the people who've got it now..,

Especially with its contents inside as well. It's this useless bastard phone of mine.

And there was me thinking you had emigrated to Oz.

I'm concerned about getting a big fuck off bill from the council to shift it if I want shut of it at some point. I'm going to speak to the council to put me in touch with the owner and see what his plans are for its contents. This is probably naive of me but you never know he might say it's yours for £50. Extremely unlikely I know but how could I broach the subject of what's he doing with it? From peering through the window it hasn't seen the road for longer than I've been alive.

That's very, very cheap for a garage.  I paid more than that for a flat topped smaller version over ten years ago.  If it is available I expect that Beetle will be every shade of fucked it can be, they are masters of rot.  You'll still be able to punt it on through eBay.

If it's not full of various random car wheels, rusty bikes, a broken lawnmower and a 1991 Fiesta buried under three metric tonnes of old shit within a week, you've done something wrong.

Don't know, it's dry in the garage, I can see through a gap of about 2 inch at the side of the door. The garage itself is a mixed bag, the concrete is spalling but it's dry as a bone from what I can see. I'm ringing them tomorrow and asking what the craic is. What ought I say about the car in it? I've got in mind saying 'does he want to leave the car with the garage and I'll 'dispose of it?'

Just be polite, and express a genuine interest in the old car. If you don't they could well ring scrappy tomoz and let it go for £ 30.00??

Don't ask questions, just do it.

Procrastinate and it will be gone

And watch someone else go in, bat off the Beetle shaped pile of dust to reveal a Porsche Speedster.

Go for it.  Garage, car, everything.  Most of us are desparate for vaguely dry space.  And beetles of any sort or description will sell now.

I liked it better before.

Anyway - an entire year's rent for less than a tank of petrol?

FWIW - council garages here are £13.66 plus VAT a week.  I was pleased that some lass at work will let me park in her garage (fnar fnar) for £5 a week.

You could even use it as AutoShite Sheltering Services - for those of us who seek refuge from a wife beating.  You could make money on this easily.

Frig me, I'd sign up for that just to chuck crap into and have a bash at that Beetle.

down here in crowded Kent, council garages (housing association) are like gold dust. They cost about £40 a month. I've been on the waiting list for one since the week after we moved in (2 years and a month an counting) and expect to be waiting for maybe another 5 years for one to come up within reasonable walking distance.

There are very few private rented garages available too (about £60 a month), and when one comes up for sale they are usually £10-£15k.

So, I'd love to be in your position!

Council* garages round here are about £20 a month and there is a waiting list. If you don't want it anymore you just give notice you wish to terminate the rent, just like renting any other property.

*I say council, its always been the housing executive as long as I've been alive

Worst case scenario is you sell the garage on Ebay, (I bought one once, never again, but people do), or have to stick the old one in a skip and build a new one in it's place, cost about a grand, and best case just get straight on into using it :-D

Do it now 8)

Get your name on the book ASAP!

Although I can see a downside of finally getting your hands on a lock up only to discover it is already full of crap.

Can you get a second lock up to put YOUR crap in?

Just take it over. I dunno why you're even asking tbh

Bargain, surely.  What part of the country is it in?    Can't be near London, or it would have a UPVC front door and a satellite dish!

I'll be giving mine up soon, it's just over £10 a week from the housing association but it's in Canterbury, not really walking distance from Herne Bay.

I'm ringing them first thing in the morning. Went past tonight to prove I'm not some Renault 20 type fantasist. This is the Beetle in question. 1973 I think, had a bit better look, the neighbours said nobody's been near the garage in the 10 year they lived there. I did look a bit iffy hanging about but managed to snap this through the windows at the rear.
