That time again

A bit of both maybe.

My grandfather had a 19 diesel which was very reliable, but there isn't a lot to go wrong with a base model 19 diesel. The reliable* Almera he replaced it with was a lot worse

They weren't well received for reliability at all. However now they are seeming to be gaining this thing that they are reliable. The same has happened with the Scenic I.

Either because the crap ones have died off, leaving the ones that are reliable and solid ... or is it that the newer cars are a whole lot worse?

Ahh but these days they can be compared to goona2s.

So, what does £64 buy you?

A pleasant enough drive, nothing exciting like most cars of this class during that era. Goes extremely well for a 1.6, I'd suggest the sort of go you'd expect from a 1.8-2.0.

Interior has that Renault plastics 'almost urine' aroma they seem to give off. Brakes are good but for the way the car goes I'd like a little more immediate bite, but bear in mind this was wellying it round the back lanes at some speed.

Electric front windows work, as did the electric sunroof. Electric mirror switch has dropped inside the door card! The boot is like a guillotine and there's one spare strut in there already which I'm guessing is probably knackered. Boot looks a decent size, should get a fair bit in that. Need to input code into stereo so I can try that and I must get batteries for the key.

Headlights are cloudier than a July day in Manchester. I'm sure there's some bullshit Internet advice option like cleaning them with monkey spunk and a toothbrush or something.

VFM I'm going to give it 100% for obvious reasons. For the car in general I'd say 8/10, as it's pretty much average sales rep fodder, but does have a bit about it and would imagine it'd munch the miles easily.

Photo's tell stories...

I've got ask as a relative newbie - do you own all those garages Cavcraft or just park there!?

Those headlights really need replacing!

Great otherwise though

How?  How are you managing to buy successively less desirable machines and still punt them on?  What is your secret, Cavcraft?

I always thought those were severely attractive machines, especially with those facelift headlights.

So ashamed of my arousal am I that I'm just off upstairs to make myself sick.

Toothpaste works! Fact!

Cheaper the better.

It wasn't taxed (which I reckon probably put a few people off) it was a relist and he lived in one of those sort of almost semi-rural locations that although hardly inaccessible, isn't that easy to get to by public transport.

I actually have a theory there are certain places all within about 30-35 miles from me that seem top attract far fewer bidders then other towns etc, so I sometimes have a poke round 'nearest first' using a postcode local to them.

The more I see of Laguna I's, the more I'm really starting to like them.

I probably should wait 2 months though, at which point I'll be married, before bring such filth back home with me.

I like the way Renaults of that era have a really giffer-friendly seat fabric that you can't really tell whether it's a wavy, blotchy pattern or it's been wazzed all over and left to fester.

Actually, you know how you said the "plastics" give off a certain aroma? Not sure you should be pointing the finger at them quite so quickly....

The dashboard shot shows none of the warning lights on.  Have all the bulbs been removed?

Staggering value, it cost less than a tankfull of fuel, less than hiring a car for a day, less than a train journey.  The Renault Laguna, it's so much less than everything.

We had a 1.6 RT "Sport" which I murdered in B&Q's car park.

Up to that point it had been good, though even rebuilding the rear suspension with gas matics and coil overs still left the back end too soft for towing.

Heater matrix's were a common fail but not too hard to replace - remove the glove box and hey presto its there with push fit  fittings.

Headlights - paint thinners and a lint free cloth.

Lights should come up ok. My 75's were like that. Wet sanded them and them machine polished them slowly with G6 compound. Like new now.

Bloody hell. For £64 that's really not that fucked at all!

An afternoon in the local scrappy will sort most of those issues out easily enough.

Top shiteing!

The bonnet fasteners look like automotive nipple piercings and not in a good way.

You've had this for a day now and presumably barely used it.
So, how many times has it caught fire?

I offered £100 for a diesel one of these on e.bay and got told to FO!

First Bol, now Billy... this place just isn't what it used to be...

You had me at the number plates, the dog was the icing on the cake!

I had a 2.2 diesel estate version and had to say I loved it. It carried anything and everything and was reasonably frugal too. Still regret flogging it off, but my stalker at the time knew it and get smashing things off it.

Right, I've been wasting a few quid on this recently. Keyfob batteries (£5!) which of course made no difference at all, plus some £1 shop wet and dry to fix* the clouded headlights. The 40 grade stuff had the same consistency as bog roll, and was mildly less effective. Hark at the fabulous results of ten minutes of half-arsed labour...

So probably sod all difference.

Good grief that's miserable.  Well done.

I take my hat off to you for having the stones to open the sunroof - unless it opened on its own?

My mum had one of these what I learned to drive in. 'W' reg 1.6 Alize it were. I'll agree it went well enough for what it was, and ours wouldn't return less than 38mpg. Mum had it 8 years and I used it for another year and a half after that after passing my test. Had 180,000 ish on when we got rid and it never really went wrong. Only thing out of the ordinary that went was an exhaust blow.

Well, a long overdue jetwash of rubbers and a general wash/clean done today, then a 20 mile round trip to Delamere.  This isn't the most exciting car in the world to drive, and is unmistakably French, but it does the job ok. Seats comfortable, driving position relaxed and the working electric sunroof is a bonus. Somewhere between wafty and dull probably best way to describe it. Goes well if you welly it.
