eddyramrod Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I've just been offered one, for free. Apparently it's a 2003 model with a 2.0 petrol engine, but crucially, a blown turbo. Oh and only a couple of weeks of MoT.Anybody think it's worth taking on? Or should I just swerve it? Craig the Princess 1
Stroller133 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Must be a diesel, petrols were k-series 1.8 or v6 2.5. I think only Diesels had turbo's too. I imagine most are manual too? Unless you wanted one anyway it might be best to swerve it.
twosmoke300 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Is it one of those special 2wd ones to save fuel ? 😀Either way run away ! HMC and Rusty_Rocket 2
DSdriver Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I was going to say enjoy* it for the two weeks and then drive it round to the scrappy and collect your 50p. But this would require it still being taxed and in the benefactors name.
D Spares & Tyres Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 its free so yes...... If you have the space these are really good breakers, for instance just the bracket that holds the fuel tank in is worth £100 secondhand if its any good. Poor quality cars but because of that you will make good money on it if you decide to do that scruff 1
UltraWomble Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Crucially - ITS FREEEEEEE! Take it on, drop in a T series or O series pez engine and have some fun.
eddyramrod Posted March 21, 2016 Author Posted March 21, 2016 I thought it was a bit odd being 2.0 petrol, that didn't seem right. I most likely will pass but thought I'd ask, just in case it was worth bothering with.
KruJoe Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Worth taking on? Maybe if you really wanted one and had space, time, tools, parts, and arsedness. Otherwise probs not. I don't think you have facilities to break it yourself, but it might be worth a few quid if you took it to a LR breakers. Any local? How far could it be driven?Or do you have anywhere you could stash it for a week or two? I reckon it'd sell on ebay at a £99 start, spears\reapers.
UltraWomble Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I'd love a hippo - can this be driven as it is with the shagged turbo ( albeit slowly / in a cloud of smoke?)Im assuming its the TD4 donkey (M47)
eddyramrod Posted March 21, 2016 Author Posted March 21, 2016 I'm led to believe it can be, under the conditions you describe. Want me to press further?
sierraman Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 A mate of mine had his DMF go on a 57 plater, £1700 at the main stealers. Ouch!!! I'd definitely have it to strip.
UltraWomble Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 I'm led to believe it can be, under the conditions you describe. Want me to press further?A quick google on what is required to swap a turbo on these TD4 donkeys puts me firmly in the "Ahm Ooot" camp Im afraid.Beyond my time and spannering ability at the moment, plus the thought of driving back from Barrow like this: Also puts me off, thanks Eddy, but I dont think this one is for me sadly. eddyramrod 1
eddyramrod Posted March 21, 2016 Author Posted March 21, 2016 No worries. I've been told where it is, so tomorrow I'll most likely do a drive-by and run off a couple of snaps. UltraWomble 1
Lankytim Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 If you don't have it Dave 862 will deffo take it away and bum it. eddyramrod and hairnet 2
dave21478 Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I need a TD4 manual gearbox. And possibly the IRD/transfer box too.
dave21478 Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 No, but if one gets broken up by a member on here I would happily pay for it to be sent on a pallet.
UltraWomble Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 No, but if one gets broken up by a member on here I would happily pay for it to be sent on a pallet.I have the space to store one for a few months if you want, but probably wouldnt be able to pull the box out and pallet it up for you IM afraid.
dave21478 Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Dont do anything special, its just if you (or anyone else) were breaking it anyway I would buy the box.
NorfolkNWeigh Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 A mate of mine had his DMF go on a 57 plater, £1700 at the main stealers. Ouch!!! I'd definitely have it to strip. That's a 2, which shares nothing but the name with the Freelander 1, I've just had clutch ,slave and DMF done on our Gaylander 2 for £750. You'd have to be seriously loaded or deranged to take an old Freelander to a main dealer and pay the same labour rate as the owner of a brand new £165,000 Range Rover.
Kiltox Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I know they're awful but I really must own one of these one day Preferably one with a working turbo, mind
djimbob Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I never turn down a free car, which is probably why I'm always skint eddyramrod 1
NorthernMonkey Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I'll throw my hat in the ring and register a definite interest. I've actually got quite a few freelander bits kicking around from the other halfs old one, plus I'm not a million miles away....
scruff Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I reckon you could throw a Prima in one of these and end up with a weapons grade shitemobile, think you'd probably want to start with a rover engined one though. Lacquer Peel 1
warninglight Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I'm about to drag one of its larger brethren off to be scrapped tomorrow morning, I have definite* plans to not buy any more scrap Landies for a while as I have most of a Disco 2 in my box room at the mo, or I'd have been all over this. If it's any use to you I have an empty trailer for a few hours tomorrow Eddy! eddyramrod 1
eddyramrod Posted March 22, 2016 Author Posted March 22, 2016 I did a drive-by today.... there were two black Freelanders parked on the same street. So I still don't know which one it is! I'll consult, and report back if/when I find out more.
dieselnutjob Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I busted one of the clips that holds the side trims inside the boot on SWMBOs Freelander. These are the ones that twist 90 degrees if you want to remove side panels. If anyone has one I would like it. Also the tailgate is rusting badly around the handle. You can't really see it but sometimes the rust falls into the handle mech and jams it and eventually she is going to cut herself on a sharp edge under there. I think that Freelanders are alright in general. The weekness is that the viscous couplings go hard which puts a strain on the transfer box. If you check the viscous coupling every now and again and either change it or remove the driveshaft then it shouldn't be a problem. The TD4 has the clutch slave inside the bellhousing which makes it a ballache to change. Apart from that they are okay.
Lacquer Peel Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I reckon you could throw a Prima in one of these and end up with a weapons grade shitemobile, think you'd probably want to start with a rover engined one though. The L-series is pretty much a heavily updated Prima anyway. I know they're a bit gutless in standard form in a Freelander but it's a very tuneable engine. I'd love one.
They_all_do_that_sir Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I take it most of the shite money ones will have borked viscous couplings? How to test? There is a cheap k series one locally with OMGHGF which I'm really not interested in at all.... but its cheap
