I'm a carb virgin sorry!

The Pierburg on my scirocco is not very happy when first starting , revs move between 1k-2k it's misfiring and stinks of unburnt fuel. Once warm it's a dream so I doubt there is much wrong but I'm happy to follow the advice of experts that are autoshite and learn summat new.

Sounds like its to rich at startup. Is it a manual choke? If so my guess is the choke gap is set wrong.

Choke is fucked, is it auto or manual?

The ckoke might be connected to a diaphragm with a wire connected to it. Remove and clean it, then test it for battery voltage with the key on. The spring inside heats up and gradually pulls the choke open. Best way to tell is by removing the air cleaner on a cold morning, then setting the choke (accelerator pedal to floor once) then starting the engine. If the choke moves slowly or not at all, but you have voltage, you need to either adjust or replace the choke spring assembly.

There is only one thing wrong and that is it has a Pierburg carb. Take it off smash it into tiny bits and fit a webber. I am amazed there are any left with that piece of shit carb, we used to replace hundreds of them back in the late 80's/90's

Probably a Pierburg 2E2,a very complex carburettor. If you can find/afford one it's often best to fit a Manual choke conversion.Or a Weber conversion.

The pierburg carb fitted to these is a hateful thing and needs lobbing in the nearest bin, get a weber conversion and not have any further issues

A used one

A new one, they do them for both the 1.6 and 1.8

Had this problem on my old Rocco. Autochoke. Swap carb for Weber and manual choke.

They are hateful rubbish those things.

Really prone to bunging up air passages etc with the goo from the engine breather, condensation etc.

Easy enough to just tie the choke flap open with a cable tie and forget about the choke - it will still start easy enough with a few pumps of accelerator pump if everything else is ok.

Take it off and do a shit in it, then set it on fire, then smash it, then do another poo on the remains.

And buy a Weber.

What ever you do don't simply check a 15 pound 15 minute part isn't causing the problem before listening to Internet wisdom that webers are the be all and end all and never cause problems 😀

As above. Check your flange. The bit of rubber isn't strong enough to tolerate all that metal rocking back and forth.

As it's only when cold probably the waxstat in the carb. These have a little tube full of a petrol wax which melts when warm and opens up a vacuum valve. The wax evaporates/ sets/ fucks up with time.

Received knowledge is that a well set up Pooburg 2e2 is better than a Weber as the Pierburg is (I think) 36/36. Problem is few people left who can set them up properly/ complicated/ deteriorate/ parts are NLA/ generally a shit design.

Weber 34/36 DMTL will fit straight on with a different flange and are nice and easy to tune. Fit one. I am.

I came from MM1000 origins and when I bought my first IMP I skipped the Slowlexx and scored a 'banana' webber 28/36 twin choke inlet manifold >> fabricated a 90deg flange elbow >> and fitted a Mini 1 1/4 S.U.

Never had a moments bovva or FTP ;)

An out of flat mounting flange might give the same symptoms. The older Volvo 340's with the 1.7 unit used to do this.

It's worth checking out your ignition system before blaming the carb, because poor starting and cold running, smell of fuel etc are also symptoms of a misfire and weak spark.

Cheaper and easier to check too.

Used to often change choke pull off valves on Pierburgs when they went all spluttery fuck, perfectly good carbs really, Webers are an over-hyped dogged old donkey bollock, I could make a better carb out of a coke can and an old track rod end.

Find someone with an ultrasound bath and dunk the carb in it for an hour or so. Then try again, if it's still shit do the right thing and fit a Weber.

I shall inspect my flange first thing in the morning :-D , any leaks I will sort. Genuine thanks for the many and  varied replies.

Waxstat and pulldown unit, only thing that goes wrong with the old 2e2, but if someone's been in before and fiddled....good luck. Carefully set up you will get injection style starting, running and economy. 1 bit not right and it'll be a pig. Webers are ace, can strip and rebuild one in the dark from my X1/9ing, but a bit mash hammer to crack a walnut sometimes.

Random Fact. The carb off a Ducati Paso will fit your Scirocco.

Apparently also fitted to some early Vaux astras/cavs so a manual choke conversion from these may be of use. again many thanks

Webers are an over-hyped dogged old donkey bollock,

But at least they work and parts are readily available for them when they do fuck up

I also experienced what must have been an air lock in water heating circuit , the passage had white crystalline crud blocking it .. As B.C. said, the 2E2 was the ultimate development of a carb...efficiency on a par with an injection system

I had mega-probs back in '89 with a VAG with 2E2 fitted, had to learn how it worked meself (HBOL was better than most but still well lacking) and found out they're actually not half as bad a people say. It's managed with vacuum and electrics to control a variety of functions, but all logical and German. I'd imagine there are some pretty comprehensive guides online, there's nothing complex about them at all if you can wire a plug and decide how a pea-shooter works.

I went all round the houses for a few weeks before finding an intermittently-failing electrical connection. In those terrible weeks (when most capitulate and go Weber) I wired up my own circuits for it, controlled by the heated rear window and brake light switches, but learned everything there was to know about them - or so it seemed. Once the failing wire was sorted, the carb was perfect and worked well.
