Am I being thick here?

I know the pic is tiny, but is this or is this not a Mk3 (2001-2006) Mondeo?

I was sure it was, especially as it was listed as a Zetec (they didn't do a model called the Zetec on the earlier Mondys) but the seller is now saying it's a 1998 on an R plate.

Defo looks like a Mk3 to me.

They did do a Zetec Mk2, but it was a runout job so later than R-reg for sure. That's a Mk3, and looks like an LX to me 'cos it's got placca trims. Scamaroonie.

Dunno really. A chap near to me broke up a 51-reg and flogged all the bits on flea-bay recently and they were listed as mk3 IIRC...Saying that though, the mk2 only looked like a modernised mk1 whereas the one in this picture is a totally different shape, so I'm not sure...

As RW states the Mondeo Zetec in the Mk2 range was a special edition produced around Spring 1999, think it was designed to appeal to the private buyer - it was basically an LX with alloys and rear spoiler and also some trim bits. Earliest will be on a T plate I reckon - certainly not an 'R'. I don't think you could get an estate - I have never seen one, and being the saddo that I am I tend to look at Mk2 Mondeos! Probably a scam - avoid. The vehicle in the pic is a Mk3, as stated above.I have seen a Mk2 on a 51 plate - must have been hanging around the compound for a long time. It was a saloon too, maybe it just got forgotten about!

Mk2 Zetec was T-plate onwards and came with those 5-spoke wheels that look like, but aren't the same as Escort Cossie ones. That's definately a Mk3, the reversing light height and shape of the front indicators is a giveaway.

Its smartarse time - As the owner of a '99 Mondeo Zetec (hatch) that I would really like to see the back of, I can confirm that the Zetec Estate mk2 does exist. They didnt do a saloon tho.

Heres a mk2 on a 51 plate, I think this might have been from a cancelled police order.

Didn't know the police bought ST24/ST200s.

I'll go better than that. The police force in my town had a Ford Galaxy  ! Did Ford make blood-and-thunder Galaxys exclusively for the Police or could anyone (who could insure it) get hold of one?

Don't know about that, but i followed a diesel PLOD S-max the other week, and when the officer dibble gave it some beans I could in no way keep up, & that was in my BMW which is no slouch.

IIRC Ford did do a "tuned" Galaxy for all those boy racer dads of more than 3 out there in RS blue. Quite how it handled on the twisty stuff is anyones guess though. I rather like the VX-R Zafira, or at least I would do if they were not the spunk of satan.

When I worked for Ford I spent a bit of time at a dealer in Blackburn that supplied a lot of Fords to Lancashire Constabulary at the time and at a different time at a place down south that built a lot of special Ford vehicles - ambulances, plod cars and so on.The Galaxies were normally 2.3 petrol but had lowered suspension to make them handle a bit better but didn't get any engine mods otherwise. They also had a lot of base model Fiestas for use as civilian cars and plenty of ST24s - a few of which had the blue lights hidden in the mirrors where they were used as unmarked cars.

There is still a mark 2 estate ST24 dog unit doing the rounds in Essex, allways had Galaxys too - I remember reading about one that had a chalk gun that fired lumps of chalk to stimulate how far pieces of chaved corsa would fly, dependant on the speed of the accident. I wonder if Boreham traffic still has the chromed cortina running gear in the classroom though - saw it on a skid pan course!
