Thanks to 320T's generosity, I snaffled it for free from Glasgowshire a few weeks back.

It came with pre-diagnosed belt failure.

So I've finally had a bit of time to investigate.

Under Will's expert supervision, I took off the intercooler and vac pump, then cranked it over. This confirmed the cam wasn't turning.

After a fumble with the belt cover bolts (mostly 10mm with the odd 11mm bolt, just to piss me off, thanks PSA)...

...the floppy old belt was wrapped around the cam pulley with snapped ends dangling.

It's OK little Timmy,  Percy the pug has gone to a nice farm in the countryside where they will make him better again.......

Will recons that normally, when the belt goes on these, the cam is snapped in three and pushed up by the pistons via the valves, bending the rocker cover up. No sign of that here.

Let's have a look... cover off, and a yelp of joy from Will.

The cam's in three bits, so a big thumbs-up from him :)

^ Broken there.

This means (he reckons) it needs only a cam and its three journals (b'day prezzie fromt' cabbage store)...

...and a fresh belt and cover gasket fromt' bay. Now awaiting delivery.

Belt: £8.72 delivered

Gasket: £5 delivered

It's mounting up!

Great stuff, I knew it wouldn't need much.

What caused the belt failure though? I'm sure my 405 TD saloon was on its original belt, tensioner and water pump at 130k when I (Richard, mainly) replaced them. Maybe a crap aftermarket water pump or tensioner hastened the 306's belt failure.

Neil's recent oil change, perhaps?

SRSLY don't know, I had a quick fumble down its chassis leg, and to my untrained fingertips, the tensioner, idler, and water pump feel silky-smooth.

I know there's normally an actual cause, but look at the belt, it's as bad as I've ever seen, really perished, and floppy, but with no sign of failing teeth or being rubbed through.

last one I did I got away with not bending any valves,so you could be ok.

Yeah I've only seen one mushroom a valve stem after belt failure.

Posted

Correct (hopefully).

Will must have had four or five XUD's become "untimed" one way or another. The valves are strong, and move perfectly vertically in line with the flat-topped pistons, so the interference force is shot right up the valves into the cam.

I don't know if this was by design, but it's almost like the cam is sacrificial if owt goes wrong with the belt, pulleys, etc. With any luck it can be made good without lifting the head. :)

Posted

(*based on a sample size of one) I've seen one that "untimed" itself running flat-out and not shit anything (possibly only jumped a tooth) and the same one shit itself at a junction and only snapped the cam into two pieces.

On no other motoring forums will you see "Thank fook for that, the cam has snapped".

Posted

as a rule if all the valve tops are level, you should be ok,if any are lower than the others, bent valves.

Its this sort of knowledge that makes me glad of shitefest, all these knowledgable folk, mines running like shit and sounds louder/more tappy than before. We can all have a group listen and discuss over beers!

Look what's landed already:

I've had the old belt next to it. I CBA counting teeth etc, but it looks like a match. :)

If I had nowt better to do, I could have been caning this down the Dale before bedtime, but as you may see elsewhere, there's been lots happening today.

I'd best wait for Will when he has an hour free to help with timing it up (WCPGW?), and them the new gasket can go on too.

mind and check the pump bolt lengths if swapping;)

glad to see this getting some love-nice work by you and Will

Posted

Ha ha yes!

We'll not do a pump swap just yet, I wanna check it'll run happily with a fresh belt first. Besides, there's half a tank of 50:50 to use up first! Cheers Neil :D

Are Bosch setups still easy enough to get? I really fancy a 306 TD estate right now but all of them are fitted with Lucas pumps.
