B3 Estate, Gr8 4 doggin. MOT'd and running... Another distraction!

Seeings as the MG sold at the weekend, I'm down to one MOT worthy and usable car at the moment, and that just won't do.. so I decided to go for a small win, rather than fix the golf or crack on with the van.

The easiest win in the fleet is this...

12314747_461870110662974_696369195_o_zps

12391896_466329266883725_234820911216174

I did a swap for a rather broken MKIV golf 4Motion that I paid too much for got a bit of use out of, then let the MOT expire.. I'd written that car off as a loss, so view this as pretty much free in the grander scheme of things. :)

It arrived in late December on a trailer, I was told it ran fine, but had no fuel.  Until the weekend I'd not even tried to start it.

It's got a cracked windscreen, and the backbox was removed to replace and the replacement never arrived or fitted..

As you can see, the nose has been over-polished, but the Tornado "pink" Red paint came up OK, I've just got to clean all the over-polish off now where they didn't mask anything up.

Interior wise, it stinks of fags, dogs and horribleness, and engine wise, it's the EA827 2.0 Petrol, not a world beater but they do go on and on, you can do a cam belt with hand tools in about an hour at the road side and they're a basic old thing that's relatively nice to drive.

Plan, replace the screen, fit a backbox, tidy it up and use it for a bit.. I've got a real love affair with these Passats, they appear to be hewed from solid granite, and the front end with the sunken lights has always looked cool to me, even as a teenager when my mates mum (who was what the youth now refer to as a proper MILF) owned one.

After the MG sold, I grabbed a can of pez and fired this one up to see what horrors I'd got myself into..

It's a bit noisy without the backbox, but it's sounds OK, seems to go OK, doesn't make any horrific noises and might actually be a decent car under the dog hair, fag ash and filth.  I will probably ruin with with Ebay Coilovers, large wheels, and Marvel Comic inspired fabric to cover the headlining that's been chewed up, then sell it for scene ££££ after getting some fun out of it in the local laybys with the Mrs :P

They really havent aged. My dad had an auto one that just went on and on, until he ignored the oil light and destroyed the engine.

And of course etiquette demands pics of fabrics and of course missus....

I like these old passats but I had some bother trying to keep the front panel red,

Mine was a 1.6 tdi which had covered well over 600k miles, it was the first ex company car I bought and I've had a few since.

YES! You just don't see these in pre-facelift form anymore. They look great - a proper chunky charm.

This model Passat is the most horrible one of all the horrible VWs for me.

Looks like a cheap successor of the latest Wartburg. These may be dependable and reliable cars, but they hurt the eye!  :?

Can't say the same for a 96 Buick Park Ave. mind.  But then I guess that's what makes life interesting :)

Dolly, this was knocking around Peterborough for AGES, my mate got to it before me and sorted out the really pink paint, before deciding me wanted my MK4 golf tat.

I'd be surprised if you'd never seen it..

Even when my brother was driving his dark green one in the area a few years ago, they were getting rarer and rarer.. you're right, you just don't see them anymore.

I think these are really good looking cars, they drive nice too. You never see them anymore, there was a black J reg GT estate driven by a old boy around here for a long while but I haven't seen it recently and I saw some scenester driving one with cut springs and stickers all over it last summer and that's about it l.

I think they look okay but the facelift model is half arsed.

The B4 ones never really did it for me.

I've had a couple of them too, they "felt" cheaper inside and the boot was smaller than the B3 too.

B3's feel like they're full on calved out of a slab of rock

Much B3 love here to unless you want to transfer a chest-of-drawers that's wider than the rear strut towers.

I believe that these are the most VW of all the Passats by sharing more with VW platforms whilst the others have Audi roots.

Yes they went from longitudinal, to transverse (B3), back to longitudinal (B5) then transverse again.

Longitudinal ones are Audis with cheap interiors and back axles. Think they've ditched the wishbone front end for the most recent ones, haven't they? So a new Passit is a B3 with a different body hammered on?

They seemed to think it would be attractive to theives, too - so made it almost impossible* to pinch.

I've lived over 200 miles from Peterborough for over five years now, and tried my best not to linger even when I worked there!

I can't say I blame you.

Small update.

Installed an air filter yesterday, just an OEM one for a grand total of £3.00 delivered from EvilBay.

Springs are arriving in the post (£30.00 from Germany, FK lowered springs), but it's the wifes Birthday on Saturday, so I probably won't get any time to work on this over the next few days.

I've got a breather, (2 parts, £20 each! ouch), door handle (£10.00) and exhaust (I went for the GT Tip one, as the big oval looks nicer than the pea shooter, so £44.00 delivered) coming, other that that, nothing really exciting to report.

Although I am collecting these later today

I paid a little over the odds for them, considering the state, however I wanted to go for a bit of an OEM + kind of vibe with the car, and the wheels on there are off a Lupo, so puny.

I'll probably get some better sidewall sized rubber fitted.

I'll likely drop them straight at my powder coaters this evening for a freshen up and rim polish.

I think the new Passat shares the same platform as the contemporary Golf, just like the B3, sort of.

A huge part of their success.

I like those Lupo alloys, would they be easy to refurb? I've been looking for a set of 4x100 alloys for my Caddy but can't find any to my taste/budget.

Yeah they should sort well enough mate.

Tyres aren't amazing, they're only 14" I think. and about 175 section wide, probably a 65 aspect ratio but I'd have to check..

One's had a bit of a nasty curb, but it's not well broken, just needs some dressing on the lip from memory.

I'll whip em off at the weekend all being well anyway, so I can shoot some decent pics over, if you come and collect them from PE9 I'd only probably want £6 a wheel, which is what clean cast is getting over this way. :)

The local narrowboat mechanic in Market Drayton has 2 of these estates, both in black

I'll have to try get some pics next time I'm passing

I had a 1.6cl saloon back in the early 00's,put it into a tree 1 evening whilst "avoiding a dog or something that ran across the lane officer" ahem

Loving this.

The very first car I ever remember was a 1987 D-plated Passat estate (D177BRP) because it's what my parents bought when they sold up in London and moved northish when I was only one or so. It looked approximately like this, colour-wise, without the diesel badge...

5962065162_e94527a757_b.jpg

It was a 1.6 non-injected petrol with 73hp.In its life it would take four people and a boot completely full of luggage on many holidays. I don't know how it moved, really.

I prefer the shape of the one in this thread, however. Find me a 2.8 V6!

Didn't think they sold Lupo's with BBS RXII's - Polo Gti fodder

If you are going to powder coat them you'll need to split em first - the bolts are titanium but very prone to shearing....

I've done a lot of these wheels over the years

Clicky for some info

Bchild, the current wheels are Loop Sport, the. RS272 (often called the RXII) are a polo wheel yes 😊. I'll leave the hard work on them to my mate Lee at Turino wheels, as its his game :)
