Dave_Q Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Alright shite fans, How much are you all paying for tyre fitting? Am looking at getting some off of tyreleader or similar but getting quoted 8-10 quid PER TYRE for fitting locally. Am I just a mega skinflint or is this a bit pricey? Would have thought £5 a corner was more like it, especially if I dispose of the old ones myself. What say you autoshite? How much do you pay? Anyone got their own machine and if so, how much do you charge?
Crusty Sills Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I've ordered a new tyre today from Tyre leader and had the same thoughts.I appreciate fitting requires weights, valves and some time but some in my area want £20, is this because they don't want to fit tyres that are not purchased from them?
gordonbennet Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 £8/10 is pretty fair, presumably thats a cash job and maybe reflects a more sensible part of the country where they don't think money grows on fuckin trees. Many places now charge around £15 incl.
rrsix Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 The local place i use is £10 each, includes new valves balancing and disposal.
Dave_Q Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 I guess its got to be made worth their while but to me quoting 20 quid a tyre sounds like they just dont want the job. I guess the valve and weights come to a matter of pence and the time taken is about 5 mins a wheel? But I would be interested to hear from anyone who does this for a living as I'm sure it costs more than i think, and you must get sick of people wanting everything for next to nothing.
Guest ponytrucker89 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 i fit tyres where i work and we charge about £8 a corner but if your local to newbury, berkshire i could fit and balence with new valves from a fellow shiter for £20 for the set (cash) fordperv, CGSB and SiC 3
sierraman Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 It's like a lot of things that look simple but if you don't know the work involved it's hard to say. I mean £10 a tyre sounds a lot but when you consider I might take him 15 minutes to do it he's on £40 an hour, out of that he's got to possibly pay wages, rent, business rates, buy and replace tools, pay the gas and electricity, sundries like tyre beading paste etc. Then on the top of that he's hoping to pay himself an above average wage - if he was getting £7 an hour he'd be just as well working at Kwik Fit. So no, a £10 a tyre isn't that unreasonable. cros, Twiggy and Lacquer Peel 3
michael1703 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 A valve is 12p stick on weights are 17p per 60gram and they come in a strip of 60 I pay £1.50 disposal and charge £2.50 My fitting charges vary, ranging from free to £10 per corner depending if it's a bitch to do. Dave_Q and andrew e 2
djimbob Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 A tenner a tyre with my local guy in leeds, to remove and dispose of the old, as well as clean rim, balance and a new valve every time - I think he makes about a tenner tops on each tyre he sells, so he's not exactly taking the piss as a self employed man, doing a back breaking job in all weathers, not to mention he knows his stuff as well Sometimes he will do little jobs for nowt for me like valve changes as I'm a regular and take all my family and friends cars there, it pays to find a good tradesman and stick with them usually cros, gordonbennet and Twiggy 3
twosmoke300 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I'm sure all you guys that moan about 8 quid a tyre think that tyre changers and balances come foc with the sun . I charge 7.50 ish a tyre . More for massive alloys and less for steelies Mr_Bo11ox, andrew e and Dave_Q 3
scaryoldcortina Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I use a local place that are so reasonable that I don't bother doing my own any more despite having access to a tyre machine and balancer. I send them plenty of custom, so in return I get fitting done for somewhere between "don't worry about it" and "a drink". The drink is often an actual physical pint in a real pub. At Lunchtime. andrew e, hairymel, loserone and 2 others 5
twosmoke300 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Try a Bridgestone Potenza on a brand new type r rim for size ! Or bmw run flats with your tyre levers Barry Cade, andrew e, alf892 and 3 others 6
Bren Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Nobody around me would fit tyres that you have supplied. Andrew353w 1
djimbob Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Nobody around me would fit tyres that you have supplied. this is mostly true here and everywhere I should think, my tyre guy did say he would do it for me, but his employee was under strict instructions not to for anyone whilst he was on holiday, for insurance reasons and such legal stuff, he did explain but I have forgotten what he said
twosmoke300 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 If I do tyres people have supplied but it will be cash and no record
twosmoke300 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Just stiff as fuck low profile bastards . I had to swap 4 once off a brand new type r civic that's why it sticks in my mind . I would happily do tractor tyres ( as long as they aren't water ballasted ) over those buggers
alf892 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Between free and a drink.........I take my own valves and selection of weights........I agree they are cheap but I don't think it is 'on' for him to do me a favour and it cost him money.
mercrocker Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 The German website (cannot remember it now - Tyreleader?) will nominate you a local depot that fits their tyres. Round my way it was indeed a tenner a go, not really worth their while fitting somebody elses rubber for any less, I suppose....I still paid a load less for my Vredesteins than the best local supplier was quoting for crap with funny names, including that tenner a wheel.
RoadworkUK Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 £8? Crikey, I might sound like Lord Cashmoney Spendalot, but just pay the money and have some lovely new tyres to drive around on! A tyre fitter's job is to fit tyres. Pick one, pay him, job done.
Dave_Q Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 I'm sure all you guys that moan about 8 quid a tyre think that tyre changers and balances come foc with the sun .I charge 7.50 ish a tyre . More for massive alloys and less for steelies I wasn't really moaning as such just interested to find out what people are paying, I did note in the OP that I am a mega tightarse and this influences my opinion somewhat. I do recall getting some done for £5 a corner in the past but this was probably 8-10 years ago and I had to take my own tyres away. The last set I got fitted I think I paid £30 for all 4 which I suppose isn't too bad compared to some, I'm certainly not going to break out the tyre levers anyway! gtd2000 1
Dave_Q Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 £8/10 is pretty fair, presumably thats a cash job and maybe reflects a more sensible part of the country where they don't think money grows on fuckin trees. Many places now charge around £15 incl. Yorkshire prices are pretty sensible I suppose, here's a vaguely related tale. I bought a cheap set of alloys recently, cheap because 1 was bent. I got various quotes for straightening from £60-100 before finding a place in Bradford that quoted me £35. I mentioned to the chap what I'd been quoted elsewhere, his response was, "I work in Bradford mate, I don't get paid £60 for anything!" KruJoe 1
garbaldy Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I have changed tyres with planks of wood and a car to break the bead then tyre lever's, I then made a bead breaker which made life a bit easier, eventually I bought an air powered manual tyre machine the one you walk round with the lever, ive now got an automated one I share with a mate, guess where I get my tyres changed, at a bloody tyre fitters its fookin hard work doing four so I don't grudge them making money out of me anymore.
overrun Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Tenner a corner here, too.I have some arriving tomorrow, and for an additional £20, it's still a propa bo bargain, imo! YOU TIGHT CUNT!
DodgyBastard Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 a fiver a corner was what I used to pay but chipped in 3 ways on a semi manual tyre machine at the cost of £33 each. It uses compressed air to break the bead but everything else is manual with levers. I've changed a fair few tyres with it, some are simple to remove but others are a right pain in the arse.
drum Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I've wrestled with tyre levers on 7.50 16s and a buck rake tooth for 900 FC Land Rover tyres but had to give up on wee low profile jobs. It's a bugger of a job if, like me, you haven't got the right equipment and don't know what you're doing. £8 well spent.
Barry Cade Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Try 295/30/20's, even with the latest and very expensive tyre changing machine, with all the extra arms and soft pads, it still usually takes 3 guys to do it without a struggle and a chance of marking the rim. Seen plenty good guys get shafted this way where they do someone a favour.."aye I'll pop yer tyres on, call it a tenner", then the lever slips and he gets hit for a bill for 80 quid to powdercoat the wheel. \folk are great when you are doing a favour, but turn into cunts if something goes wrong. JohnK, andrew e, xtriple and 2 others 5
For Fiats Sake Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Tyre bloke I use here in Halifax would charge £10 if you didn't buy the tyre from him, he's cheap as anyone else for buying new tyres - including interweb places. I usually do my research online and go to him with what brand etc. He does punctures for £8 too (repairs not makes). He's near the hipperholme crossroad if you get this way.
junkyarddog Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I'm lucky enough to have this in the shed. Will fit all 4 for a can of coke Great for the smaller tyres fitted to my older shite, get the moderns tyres fitted where I buy them though. andrew e and KruJoe 2
Mr A Lawrence Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 £8 to £10 per tyre?? Look at it this way..... £1800 for a tyre machine, same again for a balancer. Building to put it in plus associated costs then up to £10 per hour for a tyre monkey. Then sundries, valves, weights can't be bought in ones and twos, bulk orders. £10 to have your tyre put on your rim is but a drop in the ocean. Tight bastards!! Dave_Q 1
gtd2000 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Used to be a fiver each until fairly recently, now lucky to find anybody that does £10! Some places quote £1 per inch of wheel diameter. As I don't drive a mini, I choose the tenner place!
