Got it on in the background.

Sure it will run down the British car industry and tell us how well the Germans do it.

Thanks for the heads up. I forgot they were going to make a second series. The first three episode series was great, it was really cool to see oddball and kei cars getting attention on mainstream TV.

Enjoyed it, The colour of that Allegro was class.

I thought it was okay, Allegro piss taking yes, but even the designer was taking the piss out of it!

SHOCK HORROR: some of the stuff 'we' made was shit.

THIS JUST IN: many German cars were also shit, but in different ways.

Yes he did but did you see what the alegro was supposed to look like,

I think the class system verdict was a good one,

Design sketches for every car are much sleeker than the finished article.

Nah, didn't seem to interest me. Maybe it's time for May, Clarkson et al. to just move on. I think Top Gear ran until it was past its best and milking new programmes off its success is now getting a bit boring.

Was a bit wobbly on its facts too - not everything was quite right - the Vanden Plas Allegro was not a failure -it sold in reasonable numbers like the previous Princess - really quite a cool car. Generally the Allegro handled well and the styling has worn well. BL committed some sins - no hatchback and Vanden Plas exterior could have been better done.

No-one's used the phrase "It was quite good for something from the MAINSTREAM MEDIA" yet.

People are always quick to moan about these things, I enjoyed it myself, there wasn't any fucking about smashing up classics for a reaction and it didn't involve some cockney knobcheese butchering a car in a fake restoration. It was a proper program on main time TV which featured some bloody nice "normal" cars.

No one can tell me that white Celica didn't make them feel at least a bit fuzzy inside?!

My favourite 'foamer reaction' on here was during the screening of the Escort restoration in For The Love of Cars.

They went on off on one screaming that the media 'loves to bash BL' (despite the Marina being woefully unsuitable for the task of catching scouse scrotes, as the police driver explained) and then admitted they hadn't actually watched it!

Weirdly enough, the same 'BL bashing' series later went on to basically vindicate the Stag's cooling system and no-one spoke of it. People are quick to snipe but slow to praise.

That's not to say there hasn't been quite a bit of BL bashing, a lot of it unjustified when much of the competition at the time was just as crap.

I had the foresight to save pictures of one of the many 'horrible' Marinas TG bought to drop a piano on.

Just watched it on ni-player. Thought it was a rather good essay on the motoring world post war with a different conclusion to the hackneyed "it's was all the workers/managements/unions/Mrs Arnold Blogetts fault" (delete as applicable). Yes, generalisations were there but without it turning into a six hour long bore fest, you can't really do anything about that.

I'll watch the next.

Raging apologism is as bad as piano mayhem. Just saying.

Why are there so many people determined to re-write history? It's mental.

To redress the balance:

The Marina was a best seller and should have ushered in the era of marque values for BL; Morris for the Ford bashing porridge, Austin for the Citroen challenging avant-gard cerebral cobblers.

The Allegro was a victim of design by committee but was basically sound when debugged and was better rust protected than most of its contemporaries.

The Maxi was a pointless drain on resources which no-one really wanted; it was an unwelcome Issigonis hangover which was the apex of engineering clashing with marketing.

The Stag was an utter PITA with an engine that should have been slung into the nearest skip given that BL's factories couldn't assemble it properly. Although the engine was signed off before the BLMC merger the money would have been better spent upping the production capacity for the Rover V8 and going from there.

Also, appalling management.

Raging BL apologists don't go around wrecking BMWs and VWs out of inverse snobbery.

Yes, my friend was looking to buy it, that's why I saved the pics. They used it to go ice racing where it did quite well IIRC (light weight, narrow tyres), but still dropped a piano on it for the lols.

They would if they had the budget. I've seen the comments and the whoops of delight when an owner gets it wrong BECAUSE THEY WRECKED ROVER THE BASTARD KRAUTS.

There is a 'laughing at crashed BMWs' thread on a certain British cars-biased forum to be fair...

It's hard to stick up for the allegro, but why compare it to the Mazda 323? Of course a 1980 car is going to feel more modern! The Vanden Plas came out in 1974 along with the Golf, wouldn't that have been a better comparison?

The thing that is annoying though is the joy that Mr May and the like seem to take in kicking the cars we remember as kids. Nostalgia doesn't care about 0-60 times or build quality
