Multipla PHAIL. Lost 4th gear.

Coming back from a day trip with the Lanklets the wife's diesel Multipla suddenly decided it didn't like 4th anymore, no crunching, it just won't go in. A little googling suggests that swarf and shite can clog he selector and a simple clean out of the box end cover can fix things. I'm having a look tomorrow.

Will it work? Place bets now!

Is it cable change?

There is a good chance the cable may need adjusting/ replacing.

A little googling suggests it's Italian

Does it have the sticky out of the dashboard gear-lever? I did experience losing all the gears on a Fiat Useless where the joint popped apart right at the back of the engine by the bulkhead, so it could just be something there has slipped/loosened.

Well, I've popped the end of the box off and disappointinly there wasn't any swarf. There was a single gear tooth though which when removed seemed to restore 4th gear. Just draining the box oil and putting it back together. Win. I think.

Yay - win! I was going to say the obvious things about loosing something, e.g., That was careless, What were you doing with it the last time you used it, &, Perhaps you put it in a safe place and can you remember where that might be? ;)

I regularly used to pull the gear lever clean off our toady-faced Multiplop when rushing first to second. It got less shocking over time.

I think they put extra teeth on the gears for this sort of eventuality so should be fine.

This whole job was mega easy, I'm glad to announce that after sticking in 500ml of weird Saab fully synthetic gearbox oil the whole gear change experience has been greatly enhanced. No more notchyness and of course the all important 4th gear is still there. Interestingly it took about twice as much oil to fill the box as came out of it, so it was obv running low.

Shite gear changes and missing 4th gears seem to be a feature of aging Multiplas, it seems a good clean out and synthetic oil cures it. Maybe wort remembering if you get offered a cheapie!

Any that aren't connected to any gears preferably,or any that aren't meant to be there at all, E.g animal teeth.

The gearbox on my VAG VAN is crunchy into third, I bet new oil will sort it out nicely. Or kill it.

Good fix.

Fully synthetic is the future. Or the future of yesterday,or something.
