Here's some suggestions for interesting looking cars that are generally very good at everything and sometimes even cheap on insurance.

Toyota Corolla

Toyota Carina E

Which looks ever so slightly like a SAAB 9000 in a very fleeting glimpse sort of a way.

Volvo 480 is cool but only seats four.  That's okay, she just needs less friends.

Volvo C70s have got to be getting cheap now and they come in some interesting colour combos as standard.  Probably ticks precisely no boxes but sometimes that can be a good thing to look in a direction she might not have considered and find something else.

Rover P6 V8.

And yes, I shit on everything else that has been suggested so far.

She wanted 5 seats, remember.  So it has to be a Triumph 2500PI instead.

But that reminds me of something.  The proprietor of a Rover garage I used to go to was doing up a 3500 for his daughter because having worked on cars "he didn't want her driving anything else".  Meaning, of course, he didn't want her to have an accident in anything else.

I'm so sorry. You are, of course, totally correct.

there is a delightful mark 3? astra saloon over on the ebay thread, i think you should bet that bought for child number 1,

and if child number 1 don't like it well quiet frankly they shouldn't be so picky.

its a free car what they aren't buying so getting picky cos the motor on offered doesn't have enough street cred, then if it was my kid, they would be walking...

bloody kids...

I think I should make it clear that I'm not buying this for Daughter No.1, I got her the Clio when she was 17 & now she's going to buythe new one herself. She's not THAT spoilt!I may add a couple of hundred to it. Also I don't really like Astras (or Belmonts or whatever that Voxall thing is) sorry!

ehhhh bloody kids...

well if poxhaills are out, then something jap or korean would be my choice.

not expensive to buy, and run almost forever.

perfect.

A modern young lady needs.... a Saab floppytop. Make sure she doesn't get her scarf caught in the wheels though.

You were right when you said she was picky though. So many cars above that I'd like, but after talking to her not sure what to suggest as;

Must be interesting, but not look old

Have 4 doors & 5 seats, but small (she works in Brighton & being able to find a free parking place means being small!)

be fast, but cheap to tax & insure

The Alfa 147 looks nice, but most seem expensive to tax and insure.

The Fiat Punto Grande again looks nice, but 1.2 probably really slow

Looks like the Pug 206 may be the one even though it's not interesting!

My normal default recommendation for a car for someone who isn't that bothered about cars is a Toyota Yaris.

What she really needs is a Mitsuoka Viewt, it's a Micra but not as we know it. Can you get one that cheap? (Did you mean interesting or hideous?)

She doesn't like the Yaris. The Mitsuoka Viewt looks good to me, but about 4K over budget!

I've just been looking at the Modus again.

https://youtu.be/e_H5z_xNWl0?t=1m16s

Seems to be five seats in big boot / short-arsed passenger mode and four seats/small boot in long-legged passenger mode. I don't know if they did them in the UK but it appears that there was a shorty bog-standard Modus and a longer (fake-Jazz) Grand Modus (sans slidey back/forth rear seat)

Have 4 doors & 5 seats, but small

This is where it's difficult to square and it's really Jazz and clones of the style that win there.

Is the Nissan Note inside that budget?

I just spoke to her. She won't look at Jazz/Modus/Note because Giffer. Lava Lamp is too big (& too dear). She's keen on Alfa 147, so I need to look up how big these are & how much to insure, the 1.6 is £260 to tax (the same as my C4 VTS even though much slower) & the 2.0 is even more!

If it was me, I'd just get another Clio!

I hadn't noticed that there was a lack of love for a Yaris, or does it get lumped in with the Jazz as a giffer-spec car?

Ok a bit* over budget, too few doors/seats (although you can get a rear bench for them) and older than she already has, but trendy enough for Brighton

When I was looking for a new car, Mrs Ruff distinctly told me I couldn't buy a Berlingo as "they are old people cars".

I came home from work one day and gave her a set of car keys, "I've bought you a car" I said, well she was all excited until outside, she found a pale blue Berlingo. "But dear, you said couldn't have one, this one is yours!"

We've since sold my C5 estate and upgraded her to a 2l Hdi Berlingo, which she's passed her driving test in. Colour me happy :)

I'd be considering petrol-motivated VAG stuff of 02ish vintage.... but not a Golf

Leon 1.8 20v (non turbo)? Nice looking, reasonably fleet of foot, compact and mechanically foolproof.

Or, pushing the boat out a little....

I actually really rate these, as long as they're not diesel. Or automatic. And have had a recent spark plug change.

Given all of the above quality* suggestions and her fussiness - I'd tell her that she's old enough to go and find a car herself and not to come running to daddy when it all goes Pete Tong.

I reckon when my two lads are 24, one will think the last person to ask car advice from is dad and buy new crap I wouldn't touch in a million years and the other will be happily running around in dad-like chod.

Three pages, 83 replies and not one mention of a Horsey Horseless?

I R DISAPPOINT.

I'm going to throw some more in here.  They might be difficult to find, let alone in budget.

Mazda 323F.  Ticks a surprisingly large number of boxes and has pop up headlights for added cool points.

Mazda_323f_green_rear_20080301.jpg

Newer version probably easier to find.

mazda-323-1-5-intrigue-5dr-61k-1-o-full-

Mitsubishi L200.  Four doors, five seats, totally car park proof.  Probably ticks no other boxes.

$_86.JPG

Late model Ford Escort.  It ticks every box.  Not the most inspiring thing to drive so you have to put a stunning amount of effort in to properly crash it, therefore a safe car.  It has the magic blue oval on the front so eventually it will be worth far too much.  Ticks quite a few of her boxes and any residual grandad image can be got rid of by purchasing a decent spec and/or applying any number of aftermarket things to make it more appealing to someone who's insecure about how old/cool/sexually appealing people will think they are.  This example has been fitted with some lovely* aftermarket alloys that are sure to get the driver lots of attention from the preferred partner.

I'm hoping to interest her in this.

I know she loves the look of them, but someone told us they are very dear to insure, so I suggested she phone her insurance company. Unfortunately her phone has packed up & been sent back so I'm having trouble contacting her
