Pillock Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 What Essexman said, I've got a mk3 Golf and its got a couple of those annoying hard to trace leaks. The floor will be missing, the sills will resemble a frilly doily and the back window will be held in with hope and prayers.Oh, and if it's a GTI, all the metal behind the plastic arch trims will be special invisible metal, for "weight saving". (Perhaps that was just mine, but both tragically and thankfully the Mk3 Golf was the bottom of the VAG Rustiness inverse bell curve) dave j 1
dave j Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I have just got a mk3 Golf and its damp inside, I found a hole in the floor which isn't going to help! My brother had a W reg Beetle, I hated working on it as everything seemed so much more difficult than it should be...
Alusilber Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I much prefer the nu-nu-beetle, I think the proportions are far better. Yes I know I'm the only one! I do own a tattered "concept one" motor show paper bag though, so in not all bad. Not just you... IMHO, the NNB is closer to what a modern-day version of the real Beetle should look like than the previous one, which, frankly, I'm not sure I'd want to be seen in. I'd agree the NNB doesn't seem to have been a rip-roaring sales success though. Cleon-Fonte and andrew e 2
MarvinsMom Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 i like the hub caps on the new, current beetle. it is however the ONLY thing i like about the new, current beetle.
Bear Posted December 31, 2015 Author Posted December 31, 2015 Nice Yellow mound is nice. Will a gentlemans pipe stem fit in the flower holder? I'm not sure I'm that flexible. Wait. Is that a euphemism or not? Jim Bell, steveo3002, AMC Rebel and 1 other 4
Ghosty Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Nice Yellow mound is nice. Will a gentlemans pipe stem fit in the flower holder? I saw one with an e-cig in it the other day. AMC Rebel 1
Bear Posted December 31, 2015 Author Posted December 31, 2015 Judging by the resin I had to clean out, this one had a different kind of cig in it. Reconnected drain hoses, left car in rain. Water running down... ... The inside of the tailgate aperture, out of the drain hoses. Headlining still dry. So now I just need to dry the rest of the car out then I can replace the trim. Yellow radio installed and working fully having sussed out that the "what the hell kind of antenna connector is this?!" was actually an entirely normal one where the pin had broken off and stayed in the socket. I need a new floor console, 12V sockets, armrest buttons, handbrake button, lower button trim/screws, assorted trim fixings and screws, and preventing from sending the same gorillas that worked on this car before around to the seller's house. I also need to fix the door lock mechanism, which is the first "WTF, VW" job I've seen. Weirdest way of making a door EVER. Apparently common to Mk IV variants and no doubt later ones.
bigfella2 Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Are you talking about taking the door card off, then being confronted by a huge flatish piece of metal with about twenty bolts? All modernish vags are like this sir. Bear 1
Bear Posted December 31, 2015 Author Posted December 31, 2015 So, last night and today, more Beetle things, all along the same lines. It's clear that despite what the UTTER MORON working on the car in the past (how the hell do you break the entire centre console. HOW?) thought whilst wielding the bathroom sealant, there is absolutely no evidence of water coming in the side windows. Which would have been flaming obvious when they were mangling the quarter trims, not installing them correctly, and losing clips. GGRRR. Morning: Sunrise in the garage. You'll have to imagine some classical music. Even though team yellow loves Absolute '80s. Popped the heater in after pointlessly vaxing carpets. The headlining was dry after the rain, but the sodden trim and sound insulation means this is going to be a problem for some time... Fortunately the sun wants to help. Meanwhile - respray roof, or be true to Concept-1 with gloss black vinyl? Coprolalia and Magnificent Rustbucket 2
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 You're making excellent progress with remarkable speed.
Bear Posted December 31, 2015 Author Posted December 31, 2015 You're making excellent progress with remarkable speed. As can probably be gathered by the speed of car acquisition and so forth, mid-manic phase right now. Sleep is, er, optional. I wonder if too many yellow cars is overstimulating my tiny brain.
stripped fred Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Looking good! Do you have any plans to add more yellow cars to the fleet? michael1703 1
Bear Posted December 31, 2015 Author Posted December 31, 2015 No, no more cars for a year. I want to get through 2016 without buying any more cars, just keeping the ones I have. Of course, cheating slightly by grabbing a last minute addition yesterday which won't actually appear until January! And it's not yellow. It's one of the few cars I can't imagine in yellow.
Parky Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Plus two on black roof. It will absorb more heat and keep the interior dryer!
twosmoke300 Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 The later vag stuff you take the door skin off to do Windows and locks - I shit ye not
stripped fred Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Intriguing! Look forward to the big reveal. I bet you a virtual few quid that you buy at least one more car in 2016. I know this because you have it as bad as the rest of us...
bigfella2 Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 I think you need to be break out the nitromors, strip the paint off the bonnet, then fit a roof rack with some wank suitcase on top, then properly lower it. You know it makes sense. Alusilber, AMC Rebel, robinmasters and 4 others 7

Bear Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 Battery from A-class swapped in - was exactly the right model Halfords Calcium (doot doot, thank mr skeltal) model and despite much abuse and lack of use, is happily charging and behaving. Trim going back in - jetwashed around sunroof, no leaks of note (it's hard to tell when the car is still full of condensation and cultures). It's looking quite good now. As the console is trashed anyway, going to get creative on satnav mount and maybe even just pay for the map updates for this ancient TomTom 950. The Beetle is now named Ludo, and that will stick. It is the Bug of Eternal Stench. Pillock and UltraWomble 2
billyboy406v6 Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Like the Betty stickers, rest is crap ! AMC Rebel and stripped fred 2
omegod Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Only thing beetle related I can add is this pic I took at a main dealer recently, sales manager wasn't impressed when I pointed it out to him Tickman, michael1703, gm and 10 others 13
UltraWomble Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Re Damp in the car - I recently discovered that the large lake of water in the passenger footwell on the Almera was due to a lack of plastic membrane on the passenger door - this now rectified water no longer pisses in through the bottom of the door when it rains. However there is the small problem of the car still being damp - so Im using old socks filled with silica cat litter as dehumidifiers - they work very well at keeping the moisture levels down - I change the litter if the sock is very damp or just on a weekly basis - it is slowly drying the foam sound deadening out. I hate to think on the state of the floorpan as judging by the mould stains on the headrests its been a long problem with the car before I bought it (from its dry warm garage).
Asimo Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Get a dehumidifier, I have an ancient budget one that will take a gallon a week out of a well soggy car like your Beetle, it has been invaluable over the years. Worth every penny, best tool I ever bought etc etc etc.

sporty-shite Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 No, no more cars for a year. I want to get through 2016 without buying any more cars, just keeping the ones I have.DOES NOT COMPUTE.
nacho man Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 I cant believe how cheap these beetles are now. I was never a fan, but now I am on the hunt. P.s I really like Modern classics. Bear 1
