The fleet future........

Thinking about the fleet and 2016.

I have the Mitsubishi which is ace. This will stay.

The Sierra needs a bit of external cosmetic work. What would it be worth if I get it looking nice then?

The Rover is ace apart from the door card and a slightly floppy headlining. Worth?

If I had to replace the above two cars with just one car, pref auto, what could I go for? Maybe 1200 quid budget?

My current plan is to keep the 406 as it is proving an excellent daily. Spacious, enough power, smooth engine, easy to drive, economical etc. Just need to get the cambelt changed at some point.

Will consider selling my mk1 mr2 in the new year and replacing with a 7th gen celica so it is more likely to be used as i can fit the kids in. This will be the hardest one as I'm quite attached to the mr2 having owned it for 11 years.

I will keep the Astra for the moment as useful for carting materials and tip runs while I do my house up. That may then be up for sale/roffle which might then free up space for another chod purchase, space and finances permitting.

Ken, what you need* is a brown DAF 66 estate !

On a more serious note, why not get the best Rover 75 you can find ? You know you like them, and they would be a brilliant cruiser in dizzler auto flavour.

Alternatively, the PT Cruiser and Laguna II appear to be the current forum favourites. Either of them would be an excellent* choice.

Another 75 does appeal in all honesty. However so does German.

How much do we think the small Rover and Sierra would fetch? Just out of interest?

Anyone on here fancy a deal?

I'm not up to date with Sierra prices - have they become scenetaxed yet ?

R8 prices are still all over the place. Three-doors are a bit more special and seem to fetch between £250 and £750. Yours looks minty - am I right in thinking that it's the low-fat (SPi) one ?

Mines the 214Si 1.4, not sure if spi in all honesty. She is minty though.

Merc sounds like an option. The Vaux also, having never actually driven a Vauxhall in my life, there could be a need for that to change.

What would I need to look out for on both options?

Big Merc, hmmmmmm.

Not so many Mercs in the price range on eBay. There is a bewildering choice of Omegas however, and very wildly fluctuating prices. Some rather fetching 75's in dizzler form too.

jaguar XJ6-XJ8 both can be bought for well within that budget, and are like a Rover 75 on mogadon....

big engines, auto transmission and super comfortable.

the downside is 20-25mpg... well you cannot have everything.

Some very tidy Alfa's on eBay with good history and cambelt attendage, albeit manual but still tasty.

True re: jags, underneath rust might concern me but they are nice. I've had several of the XJ40's in the past. Lovely. Not that bothered about mpg, never really have.

true that the underneath of an XJ needs to be looked at carefully as there are some crusty ones around, but there are also some well looked after ones floating about.

its a case of looking at a few before jumping in and buying one, plus the X300 is a quantum ahead of the XJ40 in that the X300's are put together with much more care and thought.

another thought may be the Lexus LS400 true there are some million mile examples about, but these cars seem to be capable of covering a big mileage.

i'm thinking along those likes myself for the year coming.

i think the Mini, and possibly the Metro will be going, while the Jaguar and Rover 75 will be staying with maybe something big and daft joining the fleet.

Agreed about the X300 :)

Not sure about the Lexus, never really looked too hard at them.

them early lexus's i quiet like square uglyness of the american styling of it all, with an interior that is to die for.

true it doesn't have the class that you get from a Jaguar but, been they are to my eyes a classy looking motor, with the added hope that all the toys will still be working no matter how elderly.neglected an example it is.

its a cambelt in a lexus though, not the chain that an AJ6/AJ16 uses.

dunno about the Jaguar V8's those i guess will be a belt, as its a modern engine.

With Omegas it will be rust that is the biggest issue, especially on the pre-facelift models. The rust is quite common at the bottom of the doors.

Also, the V6 engine has ridiculously short cambelt intervals - 40,000 miles or four years.

The 2.5TD engine - de-tuned Bimmer unit - is rare as rockinghorse shite in manual form but very desirable. Only 125hp or so but torquey and sounds pretty decent.

The air-conditioning won't work, and it's likely the pixels will have buggered off from the onboard computer display.

Other than that, if you find one in Elite spec with boxes ticked you can pretty much get a car that had all of the kit an E-Class of that era had but cost around £8000 less, and wasn't £8000 worse.

If you opt for an MV6 (in 2.6 or 3.0 form) expect firmer seats and a firmer ride. There's a reason police forces loved them.

I'd agree with a Lexus, but in GS 300 flavour. Japanese reliability, tasteless Yank Tank looks, but a profile so low it's almost subterranean :) In fact I've almost talked myself into one. :o

A mate of mine might be getting rid of a Jaguar X300 runs on LPG, no test but I don't think it wants much doing. Body was good on it. Done 220k though...

Just thought of an issue. Gotta be able to get it in a standard council lock up. The Sierra just about fits.

Not sure the council would be happy for me to modify their garage block :(

don't tell 'em,

and if someone squeals and grasses you up to the council,

tell them "a black man" did it.
