2001 A160 LWB Auto Project of pointlessness £200

The hunt for Red October Yellow Beetle is now SRS BZNZS, so this is a bit of a clearout.

Prices may be mobile. I am keen on having the space as well as the cash, as it were. Am prepped to eBay bits/cars, but prefer not to.

Tempted to Raffle. Pics incoming...

A160 automatic - LWB, 2001, 110000 miles-ish. Proper auto. Full length sunroof. Some welding in the past on subframe but not rotten, trailing arms okay. Interior half-leather. Scruffy bits but could be presentable. MOT expired in October, but has been off road (started/shunted about) since April or May, often undercover. Roof still works! Needs driveshaft, tyres, probably other bits, battery won't be healthy now. Starts and drives but as ABS ring has departed NSF driveshaft, goes into limp home mode - 2nd gear, 30 limited. Front struts/nuts are quite rusty, hence CBA getting into it, though no worse than any other 2001 car I expect.

£200, please, take it away.

Other Mercedes content and BMW - GONE!

Honda Accord might be up for grabs too. It cost me £170 + £80 in new pads & discs, but still needs ABS wiring and sticky calipers sorting.

And wanted is very specific.

1999-2001 New Beetle. 1.6 manual strongly preferred. Must be yellow, must have sunroof. ACQUIRED! With bonus water features and botanical garden.

I hear you on the need for yellow, it is a strangely alluring colour.

Beetles in good nick still commanding strong'ish prices. I will watch with bated breathings. I miss my black Beetle.

I've seen a lot of New Beetles going for £6-700 - though tip it up to 2002 onwards and they're more like £1500, and 2004 - £2500 up. I want 2001 or earlier because of the yellow paint changing, when I had my facelift New Beetle it was black because the only yellow was "Mellow Yellow".

Oddly, a black one is also acceptable as it's going to be striped like a bumblebee, but finding black & sunroof is equally hard. And I want yellow interior details.

Any more details/pics on the 300ce. We've a couple of XJ's in the moment if you need anything.

Think the 300CE is spoken for already! XJS - right now i need motivation, money, cojones and some imperial spanners. And to not look at the bit under the rear bumper too closely, Long-term, I need a facelift bonnet with growler, padding and so forth, and would be interested in getting some '91-on 5.3 HE inlet fannymoulds to play with and get a better understanding of how the coolant line interacts with them.

Are you sure you want a 1.6 Beetle?  I just got my daughter one- she also wanted yellow- but in 2.0 flavour, and it was cheaper to insure than her Getz.. The 1.6 is a horrible engine. HORRIBLE. The 2.0 is the old Mk3 GTi lump which gives less issues and is far easier to fix if it does. 2.0's also seem cheaper as everyone wants the 1.6 'cos they think it'll be cheaper to run and insure. Its not.

Posted

Let me know if not I might be able to swing things. We've only got v8 flavour in at the moment. I had a set of inlets, two in fact and they went on ebay for pennies  :-(

Posted

Good man prepare to be different. Can i ask is it the new beetles that come with the flower pot in the dash??

Posted

I have a 2000 one on private plate? Its 2.0 though. Black leather etc etc. Needs a fettling, would be cheeeep tho

I had a 1.6 Cabriolet and I didn't mind it. Bad on fuel. A few people have said the opposite on 2.0 - TBH insurance is not the worst fear and if I find a 2.0 and it's nice, I'll have it.

Is it yellow, does it have sunroof, will it make in through 2000 miles and winter before I need to throw time and money at it? If the answer to those is yes, and it's not on daft wheels or stupid suspension, I'm very interested indeed :)

It is. My black one used to have a purple sunflower, this one will of course have a yellow one :)

It's heading out this weekend - I could peel the 2 off the E320 and add a C? :D V8 is X308, no? I want XJ-S parts - though one day I will have an X300/308 just because statistically, it's going to happen.

Posted

Yes your right x308 (still learning) although we have have a matched set of new boxed cylinder heads for a 5.3 somewhere.

I love 80's early 90's Mercs, used to have diesel flavoured in the pass and they ran beautifully on veg. Might have to hunt down a W123/W126 for shiggles.

Posted

Definitely grab a W123 - they're still vaguely affordable. S123 with bodycolour hubcaps, 280T/E. :D

If you've got spare heads and I can afford them I may well be interested. I also want a block with detached liners to make a coffee table - would need block sans hardware and four pistons/rods plus maybe four extra rods to make feet.

Posted

No V12 blocks but I think the boss has stashed away a few V8's for that reason I'll ask him what he's got. Off the top of my head the heads are £300-350 a piece but I know he got them cheap to start with so there might be a deal there.

Got any pics of the E34 and 300CE?

Selling a beautiful W124 coupe for the sake of a Golf IV in drag ?

I reckon the AS lynch mob will be ringing your doorbell anytime now...

If it helps I'll stick a test tube with a plastic daisy on the dash of this and nobody will ever know. It has a sunroof

I have some standards :P

(Take it away. I'll start feeling sorry for it if you leave it there).

Beetles are a great weapon against rush hour. It's difficult to be miserable in one, and even the nastiest commuters assume I'm a long haired bird long enough to let me out of junctions before they spot the beard.

Ta,

300CE is going tomorrow! But I'll take pics anyway. For porn.

If it helps the AS-cred, I'm not getting rid of the 300CE for a Mk IV Golf in drag, I'm getting rid of it to focus on this.

I'm getting rid of the E320 CDI for a Mk IV Golf in drag, because I have a hearse and don't need two estate cars.

The E34 is ex-motoring journalist car. It's green. It has more rust on the bootlid than a 1987 XJ40 living on Mull. It's got a really nice engine, sweet-changing box (no clutch though, slips a fair bit if you're not careful), worn bushes, a missing wiper. Pics tomorrow. As long as the ugliness of it doesn't break the camera.

It is easy to be miserable in my family if you see one (especially in yellow),

Have you ever heard of "punch buggy"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punch_buggy

Stupid game the wife (and kids when they came along) have been playing for over 20 years.

We've actually improved/amended the game and it now stands at

Standard Beetle - 1 punch

Convertible Beetle - 2 punch

Convertible Beetle with Lid off - 3 punch

All to be delivered with the phrase "punch buggy" as the punch lands on the recipients arm.

However you then envoke the joker yellow card for double punch.

THANK GOD, only ever seen one yellow convertible bug with the lid off. That was six punches my 17yr old had great pleasure in landing on my left arm.

Worryingly its actually very addictive, and we have actually been in the back of a friends car, when the wife screamed punch buggy and landed two swift punches to the arm.  Thankfully friends always knew we were nuts.

(I learned to play punchbuggy in Canada. Then I got a New Beetle Convertible. Then my then-gf delighted in punching me whenever we approached the car or saw a reflection of it).
