Right boys and girls. After last night/this mornings debacle I am in dire straits again. I cant do gearbox change on the saxo (wrong bloody weather) so that needs to go. Any offers welcome, mot may good engine, kippered body but no corrosion. Which leads me on to the next dilemma. Insurance company saying they wont change cars again. Can they do that? If saxo goes in surely not expected to pay for a service I'm not receiving? The Vectra is also being done this week. Good times are coming,I can feel it!

Dump AX for whatev's money you can get.

Ask insurance company why they are being so restrictive? Do they reckon you are some kind of secret trader with all of these recent changes. Remind them that you are paying for a service and it is up to you ow many times you might wish to change vehicles. Find less fuckwit insurance company. .

Focus on getting the Vectra straight ASAP and just drive very carefully for a long time.

They gave ne some sort of questionnaire when I changed to saxo, asking why I change cars and am I a trader etc. They said something about being within their rights to restrict me from making more changes. Bloody arses

Just tell them that you seem to be having shit luck currently with used car selection gods.

This ^^^

That way you'll have one working car which you know you like without the hassle of bickering with your insurance company. See it out to the end of the policy then sack them off for someone that better meets your needs.

Sorry, to add to my previous post...

Bub, we've had the discussion about what a shit year we're both having. One thing that's really helped me is to simplify my life as much as possible - One car which I know I can trust, a few friends I know I can trust, just a general mentality of "what's the easiest way to do xxxxxxx".

The Vectra sounds like the ideal vehicle to tool around in (carefully!!!) while you sort out the rest of your shit.

It does get better, trust me :)

The Vectra is ideal. Comfy, smooth and reliable but I need something on road till that's done. I've stumbled across an escort van on a 51 plate with mot, roof rack and towbar. Very tempting to use as workhorse. Are they veg friendly?

Re the insurance thing - in this country, a motor insurance policy is to cover a specified driver on a specified car for a specified period, in exchange for a specified premium.  A change to any of those counts as a change in contract terms and can technically be refused by either party.  Most insurers will allow changes of vehicles (subject to an "admin fee"), but it's at the insurer's discretion.

My insurers eventually decided I was taking the piss with the number of times I was changing vehicles, and they also said they wouldn't do any more.  In the end I had to bite the bullet and fork out for a trader's policy.

I'm going to view this van, hopefully buy it and then me and my mate can go back to car boots. Vectra will be good to go witha new sump and couple of tyres

I'd be wary of buying anther vehicle, particularly a van. I understand some insurance companies won't cover vans so you may be no better off.

It's very easy for me to say but could you really not use public transport/shanks pony for a few days/a week until the Vectra is fixed?

Breakdown cover would seem a wise investment, perhaps spend the money here rather than another car or van. At least you should be able to get yourself and car home in the event of future problems. Might turn a crisis into more of a pain in the arse.

I'm in for a tenner for some breakdown cover.

Bub, before you go and buy it, establish the low down with insurers. If they won't let you have another then I wouldn't buy.

Also, not wanting to piss on your parade, but also is this financially sensible. You've bought several cheap cars that are now bridge fodder or have gone over the bridge, and said recently that you were in a bind for money.

Doesn't it make more sense to bite the bullet for a week and get the Vectra done? Consolidate the losses.

To be honest I have always had 1 eye on a van for the fetching, carrying etc I do. I've carried motorbikes in back of a car before which wasn't ideal. I'm hoping to have vec on road in a few days too

Get the Ax on here sharpish and no doubt some lunatic will buy it.

If th vectra is nearly done thats even more reason to hang fire on another vehicle, you're just risking making life more difficult for yourself Shirley?

As Cheggers says above, when things are difficult often the best thing to do is simplify, and protect yourself from future problems.

A van will be expensive to insure, an Escort van will destroy your soul faster than watching The X Factor on a continuous loop for 36 hours.

I thought they were expensive for private use?

DrJ is right though, it's daft buying another motor as you're just buying more trouble. It's a bit like putting a sellotape 'plaster' in the hole of the bottom of your dinghy then heading off for America. It's going to wrong, it really is, then you've spunked more money you can't afford, on another motor you can't afford.
