Your Ride Your Wa.....wait, wrong forum, but the sentiment is right.  However, looking at it from my point of view, wouldnt you be better spending your time and money on some of the worthwhile projects you have in the garage?

I think it's fair to say this isn't a long-termer. However, I really need to crack on with getting the long-termer sorted out - ie the XM. Still trying to find some slider boots so I can rebuild the sodding front brakes.

Posted

Sounds OK for free, run it til end of text then eBay it!

I have some Xantias calipers you could have, do you know if they are the same as the XM?

Posted

May I suggest cleaning it up and inviting andy cms down.

you should see 250 on it to spend on the xm and he could put a gold tailgate on it and have amatching* pair

I believe there is some interchangeability, though it's never as easy as that - there are at least three different types of caliper fitted to XMs and all the brake specialists I've spoken to so far think that the one's fitted to mine don't exist. HELPFUL.

Put a pic on, I'll have a look at my Xantia ones

old citroen in "they never made them with that" shocker.

what to do is save money for xm bits. take xm off road for a week use volvo for longer journies, nippa for town work and do xm all at once:)

Brakeparts.co.uk lists a few options but helpfully* none of the spares are in stock.

Pic won't help much as they all look the same! Key difference seems to be slider size. 16mm diameter is what I got sent (10mm thread) but the ones on the car are 18mm (12mm thread). You can measure the slider diameter without removing them.

I have all of the XM bits bar the boots. Someone has sent me second-hand sliders (I only needed one!) and I have new discs and pads to go on (EBC ones that I paid for with my own money and everything during a rare period of thinking I had some money). I was very much looking forward to cracking on with that job knowing that if I didn't get it completed in a day, then it didn't really matter as I have the Volvo.

Yeah, I know we are all about the unloved, and free car etc but I would give cms206 a bell straight away. It looks grim as hell, in the good way.

Three different kinds of XM Caliper?  There's at least two different kinds just for the Xantia estate!  so while there might be interchangability you can bet it will never be with the ones you can actually buy.

I once managed 35mpg from my 2.3 740GLE. My 760 Turbo initially struggled to get 20 mpg but with much fettling - various suspension components, thermostat, injectors and what not - The best I can get from it now is 29mpg at an indicated 70-75mph.

Wot a ace fred, innit.

I'd be seriously happy with 27mpg out of one of these by the way. You've done bloody well with this, fair play to you, just spent and enjoyable 20 minutes or so reading though it all.

Hope you can dry it out, there's flippin nowt worse than a car that's wringing wet inside

Must be damp Volvo season, after a monsoon yesterday my 940 now sports an unpleasantly clammy driver's seat and front carpets.  No idea where it's coming from but hopefully it's something simple.

That looks utterly miserable by the way, top marks and joking aside it's pretty good for a free car!

I think that's what's making me feel so grumpy-guts about it at the moment. Can't carry passengers as the seats (apart from mine) are sodding soaked. Hoping for a few dry days so I can crack on with a dry-up - your newspaper idea plus dehumidifier.

Actually, the 60% part of the rear seat base wasn't actually bolted in! So that's drying in the garage.

Sunroof drains are well worth a check. They were completely clogged on this when I got it. A quick poke with a bit of wire had them gurgling clean. Blockage was right at the top.

Thanks, I was thinking that, one to check tomorrow when it's light.  A tub of cat litter is now part of the car's interior equipment for the foreseeable future.

27mpg isn't bad! They should do better on long runs but if it's not running right it'll not help. Manual for OMGDRIFTECONOMY.

For those who are experiencing leaks, if the sunroof drains are clear check the screen.itself to make sure it's not come unbonded from the frame.

[thread hijack] Tell me about it - I have a puddle in the passenger footwell of the Almera - its either the drain tube off teh sunroof come off or the windscreen bonding failed.

Trouble is its too wet, windy and pissing cold to be arsing about dismantling my car to find either right now.

As you were

Great, just great!

This threads now got me on ebay looking for another one of these! Thanks a lot!

Because I'm a picky little shit, I want a 2.3 GLE auto, early flat front type, estate this time though, I've already had a saloon.

27 mpg is good I was always below 25mpg with the non cat 2.0i and a couple of mpg more with the 2.3i but I was younger and a car salesman!

Posted

The one time I measured the mpg on my diesel 940 it was 33. I won't say what I get out of the 850 because it upsets the rest of the SVM.

Went out in the Volvo today for the first time in a while. When starting from cold, it only just catches itself to get to some sort of idle, which is still too low - especially once it has warmed up. Still pinking quite badly too.

So, anyone with any knowledge of these engines know what I can look for? It sort of says induction leak to me, but the bellow on the injectory nonsense thing looks ok. Any other obvious places to check? I'm reluctant to just back the timing off as if anything, it might cause the idle to drop further.

EDIT - I'm not going to have time to tinker until the weekend as I'm away again. Views appreciated though! Come in SVM!

People always fiddle with the Jetronic on those engines, even though it never seems to be the cause of poor running.

I'd say start with the usual ignition checks, and if it still isn't running right do a compression test.

Posted

I suspect some fiddling has already occurred. The idle adjuster seems almost entirely wound out. With my CX, someone had cranked the mixture up to horribly, horribly rich when all it needed was a new intake hose...
