Good on you for loving the unloved and being prepared to show us when it hasn't gone to plan.

So the PPE went to the vets today and despite my worst fears its *only a hole in the radiator according to my friendly local garage so that's an £80ish fix with a new rad not several hundred for a head gasket... I think it helped to fill the cooling system correctly as there is a bleed valve to let the air out as you fill it which I did not know about....

Hopefully once that is done I can give it a good service and get it back on its feet ..... it just gets better and better .... famous last words....

Edit :----Ha ha ..... not even £80 but £52 bonus.....

I'm glad you have bought this.

It means I won't have to. Thanks, mate :-)

Excellent!!

My late friend Roland wanted to buy a new one back in the day. So we went to the friendly Mopar dealer and test drove one.

It felt like it was permanently in limp home mode. Thus no purchase was done.

I think I scared it on the way to work this morning...

On a brighter note I ordered a new radiator from ebay about 3pm yesterday and it arrived today before 10:30am ... stunning especially as it was only £52 including postage...so should be long trip ready by the end of Friday all things being equal...

Brilliant stuff ! PTs are proper futureshite, they have absolutely no redeeming features ! Naturally, I've wanted one ever since their prices dropped below £1K (i.e. six months after they started selling them).

The only reason I haven't bought one yet is that they have the reputation of being absolutely awful to work on (as confirmed above by panhard65). Will you be doing any spannering on yours, or will you farm any necessary work out ?

TAXI !!!!! I'd rather walk. But good on you for taking one for the team.

I have a grudging respect for these, they did at least try to do something different.

That said the loonies in the owners club seem worse than dubbers.

This should probably be in the confessional thread as I am one of the loonies and they are actually really nice people if a little eccentric

Sooooooo I thought I would read up on the procedure for removing the radiator ... how hard can it be I thought after all the allegro procedure was

1. open bonnet

2 disconnect fan

3 disconnect top and bottom hoses

4. undo 4 screws and lift out.

Have a well earned cuppa.... total time spent 15 minutes including drinking the tea....

Well the procedure for the PPE is.....

REMOVAL

(1) Disconnect negative cable from battery.
(2) Remove battery and battery tray (Refer to 8 -
ELECTRICAL/BATTERY SYSTEM/BATTERY -
REMOVAL).
(1) Make sure ignition switch is in OFF position
and all accessories are OFF.
(2) Open hood.
(3) Remove the air cleaner housing(Refer to 9 -
ENGINE/AIR INTAKE SYSTEM/AIR CLEANER
HOUSING - REMOVAL).
(4) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable then the positive cable.
(5) Loosen bolt and retainer that holds the battery
down to the tray (Fig. 8) or (Fig. 9).
(6) Lift battery out of battery tray and remove
from vehicle.

fan screws (Fig. 31) and (Fig. 32).
(11) Lower vehicle and remove the remaining radiator
fan attaching screws.
CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage the
radiator cooling fins and tubes during fan removal.
(12) Remove radiator fan by lifting up from the
engine compartment

RADIATOR
REMOVAL
NOTE: It is not necessary to discharge the air conditioning
system to remove the radiator.
(1) Drain cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING/
ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE).

(4) Disconnect lower radiator hose (Fig. 33).
(6) Non-Turbo Vehicles: Dislodge lower radiator
air seal from side radiator air seals (Fig. 34).
(7) Remove fasteners

(9) Remove radiator assembly (Fig. 36) by lifting it

up from the engine compartment. Care should be

taken not to damage the cooling fins and tubes

during removal.

(10) Non-Turbo Vehicles: Remove the lower air

seal from radiator (Fig. 34).

I didn't even add all the other detailed steps like removing the aircleaner, the battery tray, grill or grill closure panel as I got bored....

Really ??????????? Why??????

and this car is 12 years old .... I hate to think what it takes to remove the rad on a new car.....

That, sadly, is progress.  We're supposed to embrace it.  :(

Posted

if new cars are anything like the rover 75, then to remove the radiator, the bumper has to come off, followed by the big fook of crash bar thing, then the slam panel.

and before you know where you are the whole front of the car is missing, and putting it all back together is way, way harder than when you took it to pieces only a few short hours earlier...

flippin' nightmare!!

Eccentric? Or ignored by the community mental health team, as no real danger can come to them or others, but they are all fruitloops there is no doubt.

Do a rad on new beetle. Wings and bumpers off. And you STILL have a new fucking beetle!!!
