I've got Sonic in a position to have a bit of a fettle.

 

 

This needs the fiberglass removed and metal putting in.

After getting Sonic on the SeeSaw the other day I got started today.

 

First I pulled out the fiberglass and was left with this.

 

 

Got a piece of metal and put a bend in it.

 

 

The front isn't flat so I had one piece for the recessed bit.

 

 

I put a bend in the other piece with the shrinker. Then stuck those in.

 

 

Then I started on the wing piece.

 

 

Half of it in. I then made and fitted the next bit but no pictures as I was doing a lot of thinking.

 

 

The bit where the sidelight screws in was a bit rusty as can be seen above so out that came.

 

 

Made a bit.

 

 

Stuck it in.

 

 

This is today's debris.

 

 

A casualty of war, started smoking when charging one of the drill batteries so that's dead then!

 

 

Today's set up. I have been using a friends welder which after the wire feed tension mod (a piece of metal connecting either side of the wire feed rollers) it isn't too bad really.

 

 

 

That was about 5 hours 'work' and enough for today.

Some friend that! Isn't too good either. If a friend of mine appeared at mine with one of those I'd send 'em packing!

Started on the front of the passenger sill. Cut some stuff out.

 

 

Cleaned it up.

 

 

Piece to go in.

 

 

With a cut out for the piece already there.

 

 

Got distracted.

 

 

Cut that out too.

 

 

It was vert flimsy.

 

 

Back on track I put the piece in.

 

 

First piece of the sill closer.

 

 

Goes here.

 

 

In place.

 

 

 

I also plated a bit of the wheel arch just where it meets the sill bit took no pictures of that it seems.

 

Now have an empty gas bottle and a possibly dead Power file.

 

That is it for a few days now.

The lift is great, I was sat on a chair while doing the bit at the front on Monday!

I am just proving that it works 'properly' before it gets moved on, I still have my little Clark 90 which has done everything that has been thrown at it. I have also used 320T's new welder and the difference is very noticable between the three of them. I guess the Esab is at least another step up again.

Despite not actually learnt how to weld, I have been eyeing up the Esab Rebel. Really rather pricey (flipping expensive more like), but it does seem to make brilliant welds out of the box without a lot of hassle. Plus, even though pricey, good quality tools seem to hold their value well.

As has been seen elsewhere this has left the fleet, I hope The Moog has as much fun as I had with it.

 

 

The last thrilling update ended in having run out of welding gas so supplies were acquired. The 20L SGS gases bottle is very heavy!

 

 

Oxford out of the way for a good tidy up.

 

 

Anyone who has a gas bottle but no place for it will have undoubtedly discovered they like falling over and breaking the regulator. I decided to be proactive for once and used some old metal from a fence to make the support at the bottom.

 

 

Oxford now back in place ready for its next session.

Expensive yes (well bloody pricey), but it should last a long while and everything I've seen of them is that they produce amazing welds out of the box. Mostly because it's smart enough to monitor the welding in action and adjust itself automatically. Plus, like most high quality tools, they do hold their value.

 

First step is getting my SIP/Cosmo welder 130 fixed, so I can practice moving the sparkly end around. Have a new gun and a new speed controller for the wire feed motor ready to fit and wire in.

Just looked and it was £1249.17. +Vat which gives you £1500.

 

You would need to be welding professionally for quite a while for that to pay off.

No need to spend that money on a mig if your just fannying around with cars. There’s loads of really good migs for 300 quid. If I had that money for a welder I’d be getting a tig.

The one I am using (as recommended by Cort16) was not expensive (sub £250) and has been tremendous.
