Renault Laguna, Y reg. But why, Reg?

I asked a man in a hi-viz who was trying to direct us out of the exit. He knew exactly where it was because "it's been there weeks".

Ta-da! Oh look, there is a towing eye sticking out of the bumper. QWAL.

Wasn't locked, so....

Well, I'm glad I didn't just bring the jumpleads. Given the not locked status of the car I don't know if the battery was stolen or removed by the owner. Still, it's another good* sign!

Fitted battery, even bolted it down. Might as well try it...

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?

oooh the suspense!

Posted

Probably the stereo started up, but nothing else did

edited to add, it's not one of those stupid ones where you have to press the clutch/brake/your shirt/something else, before it will go is it?

I'm going for that satisfying 'whirr' noise that lulls you into a false sense of social security, then a click, then nothing.

No, the stereo won't work without the code because battery was disconnected.

Some clicking noises happened, and the red dot of doom came on on the dashboard. No ignition or warning lights, start button does not start car. Cavcraft wins*

OK, so that's a total electrical failure. Huh.

I'll come back to that though. Other issues...

Flat tyre. Where is the spare?

Oh.

Daughter gave up and went. Said to ring her later if still stuck.

Right, first things first. Flat tyre isn't a problem if I can't get the car to start so let's have another go.

This time I pressed down on the "key" while it was in the slot and all the dash lights came on.

So...

20151122_133744.jpg

and...... nothing.

Hold down key while pressing start with other hand however, and it started. No noises, didn't cut out when I let go of the key. Actually you can remove the key at this point, it seems to only want it when starting. Left it to warm up a bit while I considered the tyre situation. I didn't think to bring a pump or a compressor. Check valve, tyre is not completely flat. This is a good sign, so

One inflated tyre later...

And off I go back to the yard via the back lanes (because SORN)

So, what you're saying is you should have right clicked, not left? Oh well, if you do have to CTRL ALT DELETE at least it hasn't cost you anything.

One uneventful journey later... it goes well enough but there is a banging noise from the front left side and rough roads make the same wheel hammer a lot. There is a full strut in the boot though, and the MoT checker shows that I advised the NSF shock for a leak back in july.

No pez station shot because a/ I didn't pass one and b/ 1/4 tank showing.

Manuals, warranty information, security database update forms etc live in this leather handbag. No radio code though.

Y U NO U?

Oh, well that's that then. Couldn't you have strung that out a bit longer? Pretended the gearbox had been stolen but actually it was there all along?

No, hang on, I've got one more photo.

Anyway, I'm going to tax it. Scorpio is now leaking 3 separate fluids out and one in as well as the FTP the other week so plenty of time for the renner to explode in comedy fashion while I'm trying to get the shopping or something.

Cant you wedge the keycard permantly in and just leave it? If it lasted by that car boot for a few months it must be pretty unstealable!

Cheap droplinks to sort the knocking and the strut in the boot?

Posted

Looks nice*.

Is the other alloy (presumably with a flat tyre) present?

Posted

Other alloy is in the boot with a flat tyre. Keycard issue will probably* fix.

I hadn't noticed the 5k redline!

Have I mis-remembered the keycards?

I thought they were proximity-based rather than contacts, I'm sure my Ma's in her Megane was entirely cased in plastic. I assumed the keycard slot was just to line it up against whatever reader they were using.

No, you are right - it's a proximity sensor thing. Either there is a bad joint inside the card that reconnects when you push on it or the antenna coil inside the slot is faulty or loose. Probably.

Hell, it's a freebie. What is not to tolerate. Win!!!!

GR8 stuff! I do like these Lag nas.

The badge reminds me of when I used to get a lift to school in my friend's dad's Austin A BASSADO

Great stuff, at least you got the thing running. They do look good these Lagunas and I do like them, shame about the reputation for bits falling off/failing.

I love this sort of thing. It doesn't matter what the car is, it's just ace that you've sorted out what was a hopeless looking motor and got it useable again. You can get a right kick out of starting and driving cars that haven't been used in yonks.
