Renault Laguna, Y reg. But why, Reg?

The last thing I bought from a breaker on ebay was a brake calliper that was a seized as the bastard I had taken off. And before that they sent the wrong side.

No more bits from breakers.

I avoid the breaking YOU ARE BUYING WHEELNUT types, because that's a good way of getting an incorrect piece of scrap metal delivered a week late.

The engine came from a reputable specialist breakers who have their own site and use ebay for advertising. And they still got it wrong! At least they were quick to make it right, no mong messages or eBay disputes just a phone call and "very sorry sir, we'll get the correct one out to you today".

I'll grab what I can from the breakers as long as it's old-school and I can take the bits off myself. Relying on a dismantler is a bit like doing an online supermarket shop - despite making it clear you want decent dates on the perishables, the bastards still bring round short-dated shite you have to send back.

Everyone makes mistakes I guess, ar least they sorted it out for you pronto, hopefully this one will fit!

Pretty impressed that the breaker has put it right so painlessly, restored my faith in them somewhat!

Story makes me hesitant to change the oil in my 1.9D Kangoo van with definitely correct* mileage and plentiful* service history

A pallet arrived this afternoon with the correct engine on it. I might find time to get it fitted tomorrow.

It's under the black plastic and mailbags.

Did they take the wrong engine back,or just left it as not worth returning?

Posted

Just left it, not worth the cost of returning it to turnip land.

I hope it is correct, and that they haven't sent you a ford V4.

Surely the only sensible thing to do now is to buy another laguna 2 that needs that engine? No wasted parts that way

If they had, I have a list of corsair and transit owners who would easily pay me enough to buy a whole fleet of lagunas.

Timing belt on the "new" engine looks worn and is slack. Tensioner also looks past its best... There is a new belt on its way for the morning, and the siezed engine had a recent belt and tensioner, so I'm reusing that one. Not chancing the belt because even though it's recent you can see a mark on it where the sudden stop mashed it into the lower guide!

But then that one will probably need a gearbox. So a gearbox will be purchased, the wrong one, and then the right one will be sent, so surplus gearbox. So another Laguna will be bought.......

It's like trying to finish up the last slice of cheese and the last knob of butter on the last cracker. Impossible.

I'm fully expect that it'll lock and you'll whoop with delight only to find that it'll now never unlock again.

Put a small child in the car with instructions to press the unlock button on the console just in case.

I think you might have to build a Claymore-esque twin engined 4wd monster Analgu.

So the previous owner paid to have the belt changed but wouldn't pay to have the oil changed ! Talk about having the wrong priorities in life !

No, I think the belt predates the last owner. He didn't have it very long!

That's right. One owner put 203k on a 1.9 dCi - man deserves a Nobel Prize. Of course, most of it was broken, but it did start and drive, and had 11 months MOT. It sold for £75.

I'd bum that all weekend in a Travelodge for £75.

wahay! Engine fitted to car. No pics because I forgot my phone today, so you will have to use the pics of it coming out, but in reverse order.

I haven't started it yet because I don't have any oil. Tomorrow!

Also, it took about 3 hours to get it in and everything back together, so my 5 hour estimate turned into 6½ hours, or 12 days depending on how you measure it.

I think the car has been clocked... The Laguna ll is the only car ever where unscrupulous sellers would actually clock them forward to pretend they had a reliable motor which could do high mileage..

The funny thing is after selling ours I noticed on the MOT website that it gained about a 100000 miles in a year when I know it never moved from the dealer forecourt but I think that's more to do with an electrical problem lol..

What goes wrong with the 1.9 DCi? I worked at a place that ran Kangoo 1.5 DCis, some of them were on 300k+ with original components apart from the odd injector and service parts, and they went as well as younger examples. Less complicated Renaults seem much more reliable.

Good work on the Laguna scary, shite dedication.
