NEC show 13-15 Nov

I went and it was ok..........I had free ticket and parking though so had no sense of loss.

Overall I think I am getting jaded........row after row of shiny cars really did not excite. And there were some really nice cars too. Maybe I have just o/d on nice cars........

On the other hand seeing the Angrydicky Somerset in the flesh was great. It was also good to see the 1800 wedge too. Amongst all the highly polished stuff I like seeing proper used cars and although in a minority there were some good ones.

Also enjoyed looking through the auto jumble although there are only so many times you can look through the Bergen range of tools.......

Well finally got time to sort my pics / a lot of already been posted from others so i'll try and just pic those not already seen.

Parking is £12 this year! And it sounds like new barriers may make it impossible to avoid paying. £7 at the train station, which gives entirely covered walkway access to the halls, or I'm looking at parking at a nearby train station and paying £2 (yes £2) for the three minute train journey.

hands up who's been to marston green

The other thing to remember - all this talk of "prefer events at tracks" or "I can see that in a field." If you want to do either of those things in November, be my guest! In November, when it's blowing a gale and pishing down, being inside a big, warm hall seemed a far better plan.

Agreed.

Had a good day today, as others have said there was loads of different cars there this year. We found our way round better this time, didn't miss anything unlike last year, started in hall 1 and just went though and back again. Nearly missed that "Pavilion" corner of hall 1 though.

Highlights for me were the Vauxhall's, all the Rover's and BL chod galore.

And that red 850R...

That stripped mk1 escort was held together with pigeon shit, the floorpans, inner sills all of it, i forgot to take a picture of the inside, engine bay etc as I was that horrified that this thing would have been cruising the streets before stripping

This year's costs for me were:

Travel, bus and train £7

Lunch (from TESCO) £3

Ticket to get in £23

Big coffee in the afternoon £2.80

30" Breaker Bar £12

3 bearing puller set (3", 4", 6") £10

Rallycourse 96-97 £20

So that's the best part of £80 of which £35 was for a full days entertainment from 10:00 to 17:40

It's not 'giggle at Cannock Auctions' cheap, but there are far more expensive motor themed days I could be on.

I will also be contacting the book seller for more Rallycourse books and Mr Lobster for some 1:43 cars in due course.

Here are a few of my photos. I am no David Bailey but they are ok. Had a great day, chatted to a few great folk about cars in general. Got dodgy guts from a service station meal on the way home and have a dirty car than needs cleaned so all good :)

 Nope not at all. Interior is 100% as Kia intended  :-D

NEC was great this year - which made a change.

I get rather a lot of anxiety about Brum. I expect it's some kind of delayed agrophobia. My first trip there 'on the other side' last year was not particularly brilliant.

Posted

I got to study all 3 versions of the 18/22 Series Princess whilst an enthusiastic owner invited me to sit in the car and showed me all around it. Five minutes later I bought an entire stock of 70's Renault brochures for £1 a throw before I sauntered through to the next hall and watched a MK3 Escort RS Turbo make £60k at auction including fees. I love it, and as usual I thought it ace.

I watched some of the auctions too. Big money, just like Cannock up the road

Must say got a bit excited on the road home when i saw a sign Cannock 17 miles, was so tempted to pop round and see the auction site.

we went.

we saw the austin/morris/wolseley wedges. they were ace.

the 2000 odd mile metro city was sweet.

i liked the buick electra 255 on one of the american car magazine stand, i think it was car of the year for them? it was triffic.

and a chrysler newport was on show nearby, that was cracking too.

highlight? well i dunno, but i would have taken the beige series 3 allegro estate home with me.

just because.

Is that white Renault 5 the 'garage find' one with 250 miles or whatever on the clock?  Still haven't reinstated the correct pinstripe I see (minus eleventy Ceri's Concours D'Campus points in that case).

Perhaps we need a more acceptable public name and we could have a go at having a stand one year.

I always think Autoshambles would make a suitable family-friendly pseudonym for us.  I'd be up for helping organise a stand as I'm fairly local, although I have no experience of such things.

I love the NEC show. OK its well crummy compared to AutoRetro or the Essen show or whatever, but its mostly made up of owners clubs for right old bilge like Talbots, Itals and the like so its no good expecting mega artistic displays and motors like Bugatti Royales or vintage Ferraris being sold by the big auction houses. I go wanting to see Itals and Talbots and invariably am not disappointed. Theres plenty of ace shite and also a few gems, look at that yankee Fiesta FFS!!!! I would have blown a gasket if I'd stumbled across that.

Admittedly the catering is utterly appalling, you go expecting to pay through the nose but snap you can get for £12 in the NEC is invariably insultingly shit.

That Fiesta is a weird concept by Healey to try and make an upmarket sporty Fezza for the US market, and due to that clearly being a shit idea it turned out to be the last vehicle to wear the Healey name. I didn't see it at the show tbh but I was fairly rushing around.

I think my main gripe was that I didn't realise it was gonna be ALL Allegros and P6s and the like, I thought it would be interspersed with some actual good stuff too. Also I wasn't prepared for quite how terrible the lighting was, even after hearing about it on here for years. Shocking stuff.

I obly went along ironically, amd still ended up spending loads of money on books so not a total waset of time

I'm up for lending a hand on the organisational front.  Not sure that we'd need to change the name, though.

Yes, it is THAT Renault 5 and yes, the bloke on the stand it was on was about as friendly as a grizzly.

I completely missed the Fezza Healey, even when I was there for three days. Muppet.

If folk are happy to, I'll see if I can do the necessary to request a stand under Autoshambles. Wonder if we should get that domain on redirect? ;)

We will need to pay for public liability insurance. You can buy it just for the weekend and I don't recall it was too horrendous. This is in case someone catches rabies after catching themselves on a rusty bumper. As for choosing cars, well, let's see if we can get a stand first.

Offers of help much appreciated. I'm often busy enough as it is. 'Help' is often nothing more than staying on the stand for a bit and talking to people, plus assisting with build up and take down. I can't see us going to town with a stand and we're hardly likely to be fencing our cars off from everyone.

I can do help and free accommodation for a few people.

I may have access to a few free standing pin board type things as well.

Also if have a stand then we should have at least one car that is being worked on during the weekend (if at all possible).

I'd love to help on a stand... Instead of polishing cloths we just need an old sock or something. Get a few of the odder cars to show and just have a laugh.

Hey! Could we do a live ROFFLE? Or is that illegal gambling?

We do need to pull a few strings and be placed opposite the Lamborghini Owners Club or something. One of the clubs had a sit down three course meal on Sunday, we could sit there with a box of cold Gregg's pasties.

Got to the show a bit late, and had trouble finding a parking space...

But was helped by some people to mind the doors so I could go look at the exciting cars.

Like this lovely PA, which fortunately looked better with eyesight AWB. Bloody NEC lighting.

And saw some cars which made me wish I'd brought a bigger flashgun and had noticed my camera had reset itself to raw at the last firmware update. Have some pictures that sort of scraped through.

Edit: No - I didn't see much of the show. Friday was a wipeout for work stuff, Saturday I missed most of the day due to family things, Sunday I really had to get to meet all the people for work, though spent ages talking to people about parts and availability.

I think so, it had 207 mile on it or something. Mum had one and i though it was missing some decals, the Campus one on wing being one of them.

Great photos, better than mine. IE whole car in the photo etc. Stand would be class. Would NEED to be next to the Megs show and shine :)

The dark blue 1300FWD with alloys belongs to a mate by the name of Bruce. His car KAC is well known and he rags the arse off it :)

What he doesn't know about them isn't worth knowing :)

There should have been a green FWD next to it, with a white roof, spots and so on. It is getting slowly turned into a race/track car.
