M'coli Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Yesterday, I passed the little Lancia on to the custodianship of Barefoot after 2-and-a-bit-months of mad frenetic fun. What with the scrappage of the Cavalier, the Pug 205and the shell of the Metroat the end of June, I am now down to the Hillman Imp in the garage which needs a shitload of welding to see the road again, and I'm running around in my wife's old Peugeot 106 Escapade.I've been looking into possible new motors, most of them in the bangernomics category. The list currently stands at:Peugeot 206 estate, in diesel or XSi form.106/Saxo 5-door diesel, with pompe Bosch, natch.Saxo VTR.C2 GT or diesel.Ford Puma.306 turbodiesel (5-door, and Bosch).Fiat Panda, both old and new. Those discounted:Anything silver - Buffy the BX was silver, and I hated the colour.Vauxhall Corsa 1.6 sport - I priced up what it would cost to insure one (thinking of the one for sale on R-R) and it was nearly double that of a Saxo VTR!Ford Fusion - too wide for the driveway, I couldn't get out of the car if it was to parked against the house.Ditto the Renault Modus, so this means:Anything over 1.75m wide.Anything longer than 4.1m, unless it's Cavalier or Dolomite shaped.Anything that won't do 40mpg or more.Anything VAG-scene.Edit: anything with sports seats/bucket seats - I don't fit in them and get cramps in my right leg inside 10 minutes due to old injuries and having big thighs.I'm open to suggestions as to what to buy next, but it must - MUST - be sensibly priced, and MOT'd until next year so no projects. brickwall 1
catsinthewelder Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Wilson Wilson to the maroon courtesy phone....
MarvinsMom Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 don't buy a pug 206, they are shit. utter, utter shit. kid sister had one when almost new, the final straw was when she came out of work, in the rain and it wouldn't unlock, both with the button on the key, or with the key in the lock. the main fuse/ecu thing on them lives right under the bottom of the windscreen, and when it rains, guess where the water runs.... all other suggestions on the list are a good buy, assuming you can find one that isn't driven into the ground/rotten to hell etc. Uncle Jimmy and M'coli 2
Angry Sheep Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Buy a Pooma. They're hilarious and currently dirt cheap. Just buy one cheap enough to scrap when it suffers from terminal rot at MOT time. D Spares & Tyres, Pete-M and M'coli 3
Crusty Sills Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 What kind of budget? sub £1k? My old C2 was a nice car to drive. A bit plasticky inside and slightly ungainly lines but they grew on me. M'coli 1
dave21478 Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 If you can find one, buy an original unmodded mkI Saxo VTR (Small headlights models). They are the next 205GTi style scene tax investment scheme. I guarantee* you it wont lose money. garethj and M'coli 2
LC Torana Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 It's a straight choice between a Minor and an MO Oxford, I'd have thought. scruff and Dick Cheeseburger 2
dollywobbler Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Puma. They look shit in silver anyway. M'coli 1
M'coli Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 It's a straight choice between a Minor and an MO Oxford, I'd have thought.MO is 4.2m, so it's oot Budget is indeed roughly sub-1K. Saxo VTR and Puma might have sporty seats, but there are pleanty of other models that can donate their lard-arse-friendly seats to my cause. In addition, the classic policy I'm on for the Imp and Lancia would prefer it to be older than 25 years old...
phil_lihp Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Puma or an original Saxo, definitely. M'coli 1
mouseflakes Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Pre-facelift 106 or Saxo dizzler. Our Saxo wasn't Bosch-equipped, but since it used no fuel whatsoever that wasn't really an issue. That 106 Escapade looks ace by the way. M'coli 1
castros_bro Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Only choice is Citroen ZX diesel n/a or turdo. Mine measures 1710mm wide and 4090mm long. Cost peanuts to buy and insure and comfy and economic enough for my 6'2" + a cement mixer to drive to Portugal and back the long way. Failing that a 70mpg Citroen AX 1.5D 5 speed fited with Bosche from a Pug 106 1.5D
EssDeeWon Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Pug 306, although these were plentiful once but now nice ones are thin on the ground. Find a Meridian with half leather in diesel form. £200?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-306-HDI-/161803936401?hash=item25ac442291 Could be abit of a project though... M'coli 1
EssDeeWon Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 This one looks very tidy at the 600 mark (1.6 pez) Years MOT. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-306-1-6-Meridian-/111751406921?hash=item1a04e72549 Actually, I really like this car, looks mega straight and clean. Would.
Anglevan Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Do you have anything left of the cavalier, my mate runs a 1982 model and is always struggling for bits.Regards a car I've just inherited one but it's in your discounted list so that's me out !
M'coli Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 Pug 306, although these were plentiful once but now nice ones are thin on the ground. Find a Meridian with half leather in diesel form. £200?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-306-HDI-/161803936401?hash=item25ac442291Oh aye? Does this look silver to anyone else, too? HDi for non-veggieness too, so I'm oot.
hairnet Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 panda........... saxo will turn into a project as will 106
Cavcraft Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 If MOT next year means MOT October, and any other stipulations are unstipulated, I can (hopelessly) offer this... Vince70 and Lacquer Peel 2
purplebargeken Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Hmm, something was muttered about 30mpg. Please pay attention Ms Cartland, woof!
Cavcraft Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 I don't think I could get this that low, it's doing 45 round the doors.
M'coli Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 You'd need to cut it off at the back doors too, and in half down the centre, to fit in with the dimension specs! There's no way that would fit down the drive nor on the road out the front of the house!
J-Rod Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Have just bought a Saxo VTR, so I say come join our ranks! What about this one... doesn't look like the twats have had a hold of it yet. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-Saxo-VTR/171900917948?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29973%26meid%3D48b347f1095443539e5f8aea98cf5500%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D321840419133 Couple of small things to do on it but that should set you back...ooh... about a fiver. M'coli 1
phil_lihp Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 This one looks very original and seems like excellent value at £300 considering it's just in need of a major cleanup, a door latch and some cosmetic tidying. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-CITROEN-SAXO-VTR-BLACK-/331635628350?hash=item4d3706193e M'coli 1
J-Rod Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 and if it all goes wrong, I'll have it off you for the bits
vulgalour Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Meets quite a few of the requirements and is surprisingly good on long distance runs. Mike is running in a Supra now so Nugget is surplus to requirements. 21 years old1.2 8 valve enginemanual gearbox5 doorsdefinitely not silverMoT until MAY 2016 New clutch, all welding needed done, very tidy inside and out, flawlessly reliable and just a brilliant basic little motor. Think Mike wants £500 or so for it. RobT 1
M'coli Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 Based on the insurance quote for the Corsa sport and the 1200ccness (I want something faster than the 106), it's a bit of a thanks, but no thanks. Although... ...is the red one with the 4 headlights behind it for sale?
vulgalour Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Based on the insurance quote for the Corsa sport and the 1200ccness (I want something faster than the 106), it's a bit of a thanks, but no thanks. Although... ...is the red one with the 4 headlights behind it for sale? Yes, as it happens. Just had the wheels powder coated and a fresh set of tyres on. Rebuilt 2 litre head and brand new brakes next. Looking somewhere in the region of £10K for that one.
Station Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 1.2 Corsa is rapid enough, I easily got 80mph smoothly on way back home from collecting.
