Cheapest personal breakdown cover

I wonder if someone could give me some advice on breakdown cover.. Seeing that both my motors are around 18 years old and I've got a long drive ahead of me next weekend I thought I better get some breakdown cover this week before I decide what car to take..

I would prefer personal cover so I'm covered in either motor but it seems due to the age of my cars that a lot of company's don't wish to give me cover or want a kings ransom.

Any advice would be appreciated before I go ahead and get some cover I suppose I could try and get away with using my fathers policy if I did have a breakdown but I doubt I could get away with being 75 even though I do look old lol.

Can't advise on price, but AA cover has more than paid for itself each year and covers the any vehicle requirement.

The AA covers me for any car I am travelling in, they have never asked what I drive.

I've looked into changing because it's a bit pricey, but I came to the conclusion that I was best to stick with them.

Try autoaid. Covered for whatever car you're in and only £41 a year. I broke down 2 weeks after taking the policy out and they paid up for a £300 recovery without a problem. I had to pay and then claim it back but it was an easy process. Can't fault them.

I got swintons breakdown cover when I took my Mgf insurance with them for £7.50 a month for a 1999 T reg car, when my Mgf went I cancelled my insurance but kept the breakdown cover.

When I bought my 06 jaguar it reduced to £5.00 a month.

It's full cover to, home start, relay, all the top cover!!

I've just been on money supermarket and got my breakdown cover sorted for £56 with kwikfit and that includes any vehicle and national recovery..

I didn't go for the home start as fingers crossed if one car didn't start then I've always got a backup car tucked away in the garage and if that one didn't work I would only have to pop down the road and borrow my fathers motor..so I would have to be quite unlucky if I got stuck for a motor at short notice.. And it's not like I own a Laguna II anymore and none of the other cars are modern Renaults either.

I'd recommend autoaid too. When the battery in my modern failed, someone came out and jumped it to get it running. Didn't charge me either, which was odd.

Another Autoaid customer here, never used 'em mind, but £41 for the year and so far very good reports are all i've read, covers you and your spouse for any car...i did check they were happy about the Landcruiser cos its a bit of a lump, no probs...not sure about caravans/trailers mind.

It might seem too cheap, but seeing as its a claim back system its in the customers interests to mitigate a breakdowns losses...in the back of your mind would be the question, what if they reject it?...so it probably cuts costs for everyone concerned which can't be a bad thing.

Was with Autohome Northampton for donkeys years but only used them twice (one of those was an accident recovery which they claimed back from insurer) so @ £100+ a year i'm £thousands out of pocket.

Mental or Vehicular? The AA weren't very helpful when I called them up and told them I was fed up of my job and feeling a bit depressed although they did offer me a good deal on European cover if I was contemplating running off to Belgium.

My AA membership is up for renewal next month, £52.50 for the very basic package.

Are Autoaid better? It's a tenner cheaper but if the AA are better I'll just let it renew. Also, if I've read the letter right, I can opt to pay £39.37 this year for the AA but must also pay it next year too.

I've not got Relay which isn't a huge issue as I might only go further than about 30 miles away once a year, presumably Autoaid don't care about distance?

I've only ever used the AA once, they often give me a free year with home insurance. Otherwise I just wing it!

Nationwide Plus account

£10 a month gives:

Got a partner? Setup a joint Plus account and breakdown covers both of you - but still only £10 p/m to cover both of you together.

Seriously good value imo.

3% interest up to £2.5k. So fill the account up with £2.5k (savings accounts are making feck all atm anyway) and its even cheaper.

My Classics policy with Peter James includes AA breakdown and recovery.

I insured the Uno and Polo (will be transferred to another vehicle next week) before getting either vehicle for the grand sum of £81 fully comp.

Whereas the modern shite costs twice as much as ALL my cars put together for £450ish with the NFU cover also included.

If the roof ever blows off the bungalow I know which car I'll be selling....

What I'd like about the AA or RAC is that nothings payable up front, no claiming charges back. It's no good breaking down 150 miles away, having to find £200 to pay them, then attempt to get your money back.

Quidco is your friend.

Another vote for Autoaid, relayed me halfway across the country and didn't have to pay a penny up front, couldn't fault them and the staff on the phone are really friendly and helpful, they called each time I was relayed to a different truck for the next stage to advise of an approximate time and check with me that all was on schedule, then phoned the next day to make sure everything went OK.

Haven't had to pay with Autoaid for about a year, not sure why.

When I did need to the claims process was simple and far from just an "attempt"

Just remembered that I forgot to sing the praises of Autoaid.  For the first time in years my better halfs indestructible e39 had a moment, and due to its location, I couldn't/wouldn't jump in a spare car and go and fix the situation.

Last November, loaded to the gunnels the car decided to leak a lot of its coolant out of the bleeder screw in the top hose (made from plastic of course and sure to harden for your convenience through x amount of thermal duty cycles).  Problem was, the car was on a Scottish Island, CalMac weren't sure if they could run the ferries that night (South Westerly wind Sir. - Just like where more of our west coast weather comes from).

I reminded better half of AutoAids number, she phoned and they couldn't have been more helpful.  Sourced the Islands only available tow truck, he went out, assessed car and advised no driving even if he could have blocked the bleed hole as he didn't know how long she had run around with it half empty (BMWs have keep you happy dials on the dashboard, not actual gauges).

He confirmed that CalMac had relented and one of their routes were being kept open and transported the car to the ferry terminal and put it on board for Mrs Colino.

Recovery operator on the mainland were on standby and liaised with Calmac on which destination they would pick out of the hat instead of their published route and was waiting to take the car off the ferry and transport home.

All done professionally and with regular calls from all concerned to my wifes mobile to let her know what was happening.  Better still, no use of plastic.  It was all handled by AutoAid.

For most of us, recovery is an annual bill that is only insurance, we don't expect to need it and don't want it, but with AutoAid being so cheap and now I know, incredibly efficient, courteous and effective, I wont be considering anyone else.

Just to add, I don't have any connection in the least with the company, just a shame that the two big boys, despite their incredibly equipped patrols, are just corporate moneymakers and they couldn't have responded remotely as quickly as AutoAid did in this case.

Another vote for AutoAid. Apparently a certain percentage of customers forget to claim their money back, so that helps to keep costs low. I've always been reimbursed within 14 days, no questions asked.

It's also a much faster service than other breakdown services as other breakdown companies that use third party recovery agents usually have a couple of months credit before they pay them, so the agents are kept waiting for their money. With Autoaid you pay them on the spot and claim it back later, meaning the recovery guy gets paid straight away. If three jobs come in, two are the AA and one is Autoaid, it's Autoaid they go to first because they know they're getting their money straight away.

How much would say a 100 mile tow be though? Could be a couple of hundred or so to have to pay out! It'd be my luck be week before I get paid!😥

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a man (or woman) in possession of an old motor needs an Autoaid policy.
