Golf 2 Moda

Recommended Posts

I already put some pics into the facebook page, finally made some into photobucket to show off my little new joy. Been in a dilemma of owning an E34 520i which was on it last legs and I really wanted to get rid off it. It drove nicely but around town and country it was a slow and thirsty shed, Autobahn was a different thing, though.

What to buy on a low budget when it comes to reliability and low repair costs? Golf 2 is a quite safe buy when maintained well and never a big surprise. I didn't want a CL, in Germany we had some fancy specials which become sought after now. Moda is one of them, black BBS wheels, tinted glass, velours carpet, GTI steering wheel, flared arches, special cloth seats, white indicators and so on. Found one very far away and bought it.

Nice Golf.

Please forgive my ignorance, how does the German number plate system work?

Different in each photo, does the number change with a new owner?

Posted

German plates are regional or city plates. You have B for Berlin, K for Cologne and DO for Dortmund for example, up to 3 letters, SÃœW and so on. The following characters are random or selectable 1 or two letters followed by 1-4 numbers.

The DO-0413 in the pic is a short time (5 days) plate for picking up unlicensed cars or bikes. You may drive an unlicensed but MOT/TÃœVed vehicle for this period, whithout test only for test purposes within city limits.

It's a 1,6 70hp Golf and it is really fun to drive! Very lively and joyfully revving on its Pierburg 2EE, completely different feel to it compared to fuel injection VWs.

Really love it already!

I like mk2 Golfs.  There, I've said it.

There are still loads of these doing daily service in Germany, without everybody having felt the need to show how wacky and original they are by chopping out the suspension and putting an old suitcase on the roof.  Like these:

Anyway, well bought :-)

I too am a fan of the MK2 Golf. My second ever car was a Tornado Red Jetta TX with the factory fit '90 spec' big bumpers and arches and a couple of years later had a chrome bumper 1.6 GL Golf 5 door. Both very good cars!

Well, some weeks in daily use now and no bad surprises, really nice ride!

One thing though: You are totally ignored by Audi and BMW drivers in it, BUT: The ladies do look and smile, even the young ones! And I even got into nice conversations twice already, girls seem to like it!

Best company. :)

I also like mark 2 Golfs. In fact, I nearly bought a G-reg 1.6 Driver as my first proper car back in 2000, but was swayed by the L-reg Rover 214Si on sale at the same price on the same used car dealer's forecourt.

Pawnote: that Blaupunkt Seattle head unit looks amazing. Is it?

Posted

Yes, the Seattle is great, nice big and coloured display without looking cheap. Totally fits in the Golf. Stopped working properly as it stops receiving FM from time to time. Gave it to a mate for repair, if it's really kaputt, I'm going to score exactly the same one on ebay.

They're the best seats ever in a Golf.

I like that, a nice antidote to Oak Green GTIs - Germany seem to get a lot of special editions, and almost always nice spec. Our Polo Genesis was a base model, their Polo Genesis had a supercharger. And they got a Bon Jovi Golf too.

I'm a big fan of Blaupunkt head units and have had them exclusively in every car I've owned with a DIN stereo slot. The Volvo currently has a mid-1990s Melbourne coupled to a 10-disc CD autochanger which was originally in the aforementioned Rover :)

Love for the mk2 here too. Mine ( 8v GTi) was defiantly standard and did a lot of un-golf like things (seats and trim fell to bits, door locks failed, gearbox synchos died) but it was a brilliant machine.

Best seats in a Golf, that's true. Moda is really loaded in comparison to specials like Manhattan, Sky, Match or Memphis. Based on a CL, Moda is like a small GTI: Same steering wheel, wide wheel arches, tinted windows, colour coded mirrors and tailgate handle, black door handles, black carpet, black BBS 15". Available in Black, Black metallic and in the GTI Edition One exclusive Dark Burgundy pearleffect. Mine has an optional Sunroof and foglights in the grille.

I saw a nice Golf Manhattan in the Netherlands a couple of weeks ago. It was still oozing factory rustproofing from its tailgate, judging by the greasy marks on either side of its rear panel :-D

If only the Golf 3 had been rustproofed to a similar standard...

Small  update: Scored another Blaupunkt Seattle RDM 169 on ebay classifieds. Good condition, everything works and lights up. Fancy coloured but readable display. If you want a headunit of one of the last quality built Blaupunkt, go for the 169 range, they came as München, Tokyo and some others as well.

Took the Rabbit to the test today, advice on one oily damper and slightly porous (?) brake hose.

So 2 fresh years of TÃœV! :D

Nice car Stormee, I am also a fan of the MK2 Golf, I well remember driving them brand new when I worked at a VW dealership and my own car at the time was a 14 year old Beetle! I would go as far to say that the MK2 Golf is the best ever....

Another  tick here for the Mk2.  I think its one of those cars, like the Beetle, that should  have just been kept in production for those that wanted them.   Really, cars never needed to get any more clever* than this.

Those seats are absolute class.

That beetle comparison came to my mind as well. Both very reliable and practical cars, easy and cheap to maintain and keep nice to behold. For me the last real 'Volkswagen' in the sense of a car for the people. Many Mk2 will be still rolling the world's roads when Mk3s and 4s have long gone.

A joy to look at everytime I open the door. :D Even in the early dark winter hours...

Going to make some more pics, the backseat isn't bad either!

The last Mk2 Golf I drove was a 1.6TD van. I've never seen another one but I reckon I'd roll one no bother if I could get the drivers seat to go higher.

Anyway! That Moda looks class. Dunno if I could live with the seats right enough but I'm already doubting my sanity for even considering a Mk2 Golf in the first place.

I thought my 1.6 Driver was pretty dreadful. Not one thing I liked about driving it. Yet I still love the looks of them, and those seats are nice and lively!

I like Mk2 Golf's, my bank balance doesn't at the moment.

New slam panel and radiator today's latest necessary purchases.

I'm very happy not to have to deal with corrosion issues at the moment, just 2 little spots where 2 panels meet under the rear bumper, will be repaired in spring.

As promised an inside view, even managed to catch some sunlight. Remember, this interior has seen 25 years, not only 5.
